Nice. I was waiting for you to pull out that contact paint/grease. Lot's of guys I see rebuild these and just slap them on without looking at there pattern. I just know you are asking for premature failure, without that last step. Glad you did it, now some of these rookies will know to do it as well. 👍

Ive got this lsd in my 240z- have had it in there for over a decade now at this point. Absolutely love it. Definitely take the time/money to upgrade the bolts/washers inside (its cheap to do so as well)-and youll have a solid, well performing diff for the money.

Surprisingly I've heard good things about those LSD's as long as you upgrade the bolts, those spacers if needed, and thoroughly clean and inspect the LSD.

🔥 I did this to my 280zx ls swap, the LSD didn't have cv axle locking clips and the RockAuto 300zx axles didn't either you need to make sure you have them so the axles don't pop out.

Is there somewhere for the retainer to seat in the LSD? Otherwise I don’t see how it would help. Even my old (oem) stub axles didn’t have a clip on them. Not saying they didn’t originally but when I pulled them out there wasn’t a clip.

@@StewartMotoring the OBX has a retainer slot inside the gears, I Rebuilt my OBX with stronger fastners and belleville washers and noticed that their were no CV locking clips. If you send me an email I'll send some pics. Also if you check your OEM differential you will see the c clips down in the axle holes. I took those out and put them in the OBX, I also ordered a new set of clips

i've been eyeing an OBX diff for my car but the internet hates them (says they are garbage/blow up) I am considering it again now after seeing this video. The OEM upgrade lsds for my car are going for nearly 800 now and i was wondering if this would would be a reliably cheaper option

Through my research I didn’t find many haters on the obx lsd. Atleast not the one for the r200. Many just complained about the washers. Seems like many run the obx and have had good luck, which is why I got it. Without knowing anymore than just price for your situation… I feel for 300 more bucks just get the oem lsd upgrade. But if money is really tight then obx is probably fine. I just don’t know. I didn’t have any options like that. It was either obx for 500 or spend like 2k.

I agree with you, 100%, on the merit of going with the OBX as a reasonably priced option. Especially if its just a street car. Looks like a good alternative to a diff swap. Any updates? How has it held up?

  • @StewartMotoring

Held up great so far, many many street and highway pulls. No digs or burnouts specifically yet, but I have broken the tires lose during pulls many times. Pulls straight. No issues. Probably time to pull the cover off and check tolerances again honestly.

Did you ever end up figuring out what the deal was with the locking circlips/retainers? Does the obx have them inside or did you have to remove them out of the open diff and install them ?

  • @StewartMotoring

OBX did not have them in. So I bought the circlips for my axles, removed axles from the car, installed into diff. It wasn’t easy or fun while dif was in car but I did it

I wonder how that diff would have held up to my 800 hp nitrous sbc in my old 260z. I never had a problem with the welded r200 but it was mostly just a drag car

I’d be comfortable with the diff, but the outer spindle/stub would have been the weak point. (Part that the wheel studs are apart off) Seen them break at 500hp.

I have an r200 with 300zx half shafts. My passenger half shaft is making a popping noise and seems not to lock in all the way to the rear diff. Someone said that I need to have a retaining ring in the side. I bought one but I am not sure how to install it? Do you have any thoughts on this?

  • @StewartMotoring

    @StewartMotoring

Yea, I installed retaining clips after this video for that reason. It was pretty difficult to do with the diff in the car still but I pulled out the axles and used long screw drivers to push the circlip into the groove in the diff where it’s supposed to be.

No tool. It’s just a ring with a cut in it. Just use pliers and slide it in, then you can get a socket the size of the clip and hammer it back in there. It’s not hard per say, it’s just tedious.
