Eating Nothing But Fries For 26 Years (Food Addition Story) | Freaky Eaters (US) S1 E4 | Only Human

Amber lives on a diet of french fries every meal of every day for the past 26 years. Her seven-year-old daughter is following in her footsteps.
Freaky Eaters documents the intense struggles of those with a dangerous compulsion towards a particular food. With the help of two experts, the Freaky Eater confronts the painful truth behind their food obsession and fights to reclaim control of their diet and combat the destructive side effects their behaviour is having on their health. Patients include a girl who drinks more than 30 cans of cola a day, a 29-year-old mother who only eats French fries and a diabetic who has a life-threatening addiction to cheeseburger. Can they overcome their dependencies and learn how to manage their diets?

    It's so weird to see how these doctors approach the problem. She hasn't eaten anything but fries for 26 years, so let's try raw mushrooms and asparagus- foods that 90% of people don't like, and then watch her gag with a judgy face. Empty toast, empty pasta, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes maybe as a first not too scary step...

    I know, either those doctors are idiots or they just wanted to create drama for the show. So many people hate mushrooms and asparagus! I would have started her on plain oven baked fries (no oil), and maybe other foods that can be baked to be crispy, or are naturally crispy. The cucumber was a good idea.

The amount of medical professionals who told us she would grow out of it, literally couldnt grasp how severe he struggles with eating were made it so much harder. Have you found probiotics helpful at all? I've heard that when the microbiome is deprived of variety and only received certain foods, it grows extra bacteria for the focus foods, and the bacteria for the rest of the foods dies of starvation, which can give a real physical reaction when those foods are introduced. I'd be very interested to see if probiotics, or slowly introducing small amount of different foods can help repopulate the microbiome.

Force feeding a kid a food they have this severe a physical reaction to will only increase their anxiety related to the food, ultimately making the problem worse. A common belief is that "if they get hungry enough, they'll eat what they can get." This is not the case for kids with ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). If deprived of their safe foods, they will simply not eat. Kids with this condition can and do end up severely malnourished. If proper treatment is not an option, it's better to let them eat their safe foods than nothing.

    @@gardyloo3093 Just because an illness has not been identified doesn't mean it isn't real. In fact, in order for it to _be_ eventually classified, it has to be both prevalent and medically significant enough for the necessary research to be conducted. This process can take quite some time, particularly for behavioral disorders, and even more so if the condition is rare. ARFID didn't make it into the DSM-V until 2013. You're right that "no one had heard of it until then" in the sense that people suffering from it had no name to put to their issues. As evidenced by this very video -- this woman very clearly suffers from it but never received a diagnosis. Other reasons you may not of heard if it before include the fact that it's pretty uncommon, and often gets conflated with picky eating because that's the closest thing most people do know. Additionally, those suffering from it tend to isolate themselves out of shame, particularly before it was recognized as a medical diagnosis. Again, as evidenced by this video.

    The thing that kept going through my head watching this was how it seemed like autistic or OCD behaviour. I'm yet to be diagnosed but it's something I can weirdly understand where, "If it doesn't feel right, then I cannot cope". Same with her addiction, other food tastes and especially textures feel wrong and even with the French fries, it has to feel or smell a specific way. Otherwise, it will not be eaten because the feeling of trying to take something that's not within your comfort zone is almost stressful. It's strange how I can weirdly relate to this because of the certain behaviours I have that happen to link with the autism spectrum. It just made me wonder about it all.

  • @ellisisland3382

    @ellisisland3382

    I'm on the spectrum and have definitely experienced similar issues, to a lesser extent. I mostly have texture problems, I want things to be dry and crunchy, no sliminess. And I lean towards bland food. Rice, potato, I like flounder because it has very little flavor and mixes well with other foods. I habe individual flavors I eat. Lemon pepper and barbeque are the biggest ones, I'll eat most salty things. Sweets are a no go and I only tolerate spice.

I've seen another documentary about a girl who had never eaten anything in her life as she was raised on a feeding tube. Second pregnancy the mother's body has problems, but the baby is ok, though perhaps small birth weight. Third pregnancy the mother is completely depleted and the baby usually has some serious problem or problems.

Progress can't be made until the desire to change overwhelms the food fears.

Yet if you pause at 17:46 you can see two foods that are definitely not french fries on the table with her. Also when you see her at putting the french fries in her freezer at 1:08 everything in her fridge is covered in a brown bag. I suspect that is to cover up the other food items in her freezer. I dated someone that had ARFID(avoidant restrictive food intake disorder) years ago. He explained it to me in the best way possible. “Imagine having a plate of vomit served to you, that’s what most food looks like to me.” I thought about that and was able to understand. However, the mother should have taken her to a better psychologist. There’s no way no doctor or psych would “not understand”. My ex’s mom took him to a psychiatric learning center when he was younger and he was able to eat other foods while there. While he’s still a picky eater, he’s able to eat enough variety of food to get the nutrients he needs. Her mom should have done that for the well-being of her daughter, kind of ridiculous she did nothing to help her.

    @Macy didn’t see her father in the video but I would think the same thing applies to him as well. Like i said above it could be a sensory issue but I’ve only seen that in children. Plus if a kid wants McDonald’s(just an example) all the time and you can’t cave in every time they throw a tantrum thats enabling the issue. If the mom and dad left the option open for ONLY French fries to be a choice then that’s on them. Not only that they aren’t caring about the nutritional value in what’s she’s eating. How is she getting fiber and vitamins, nutrients?

    I have a similar case to this, but it's emetophobia. I've struggled with it for 4 years and i finally decided to get help, because it's getting out of hand. It has stopped me from trying new foods, eating out, going on rollercoasters, going on boats and airplanes. But i'm getting more comfortable with foods and i'm trying more things. I'm so happy that i'm finally changing and going back to a normal life style. But i believe i can do this! ❤

    I feel really sorry for her and also amazed that she doesn’t seem like to have any serious health problems eating fries everyday for more than 20 years. But this is such a first world problem 🤷🏼‍♀️

    @@otizev well she's not stupid, she knows that she isnt healthy and it will rub off on her daughter, she should get hostpitalized and get therapy to help her gain a healthier relationship with food and teach her daughter healthy eating habits that will last for a lifetime. Calling her stupid isnt the solution.
