It's been so long since I ate this, but I think my mom always used a lot of tapioca beads/balls in there (not the tapioca flour). Also, I think we drenched everything in coconut cream. If you use coconut cream, you don't have to add the tapioca mixture, which made yours thicker, but lumpier.
