Hi Ray, Happy you like it. A real mess around here. About 12 degrees and wind. A giant fir tree came down and landed on the house the next street over. It would have hit us if it came this way. Every time the wind blows hard for the last 50 years I thought about that. I am stuck using a walker since I messed up my ankle so I do not move very fast A bunch of snow as well. Not the usual Oregon weather.

Thanks Phil. Well I do enjoy this and it is very exciting to see it happen the way I plan. It is way worse than you can imagine. Combination of 14 degrees and constant wind has taken many trees down and we have lost power for 24 hours now. The worst fallen tree is one of 3 I have shown in a video with them swaying in the wind. The center tree which was the biggest and well over a hundred years old fell over yesterday morning. I guess lucky for us it fell the other direction and landed on the house on the next street over taking a big slice out of it. They're over there now change signing it up trying to get the pieces off the house so they can cover it. Pretty sad. Friends of ours have had two trees fall on their property and luckily didn't do any damage. Another friend down our road had a huge fir tree fall and just missed his house. So no fun and games here in garden home and I can't get on my computer to do another video which I have planned on using a really cool add-on to this software. My issues now is I have a appointment with the surgeon to look my ankle over this Tuesday and it's talking about freezing rain on Tuesday so I'm not sure how I'm going to get over there. But this is Oregon and they change the weather forecast every 5 minutes. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

@@ThePapa1947 Wow, that sounds awful, Gary! It's all awful but losing power is the worst. Do you have some way to heat your house? Generator? Who's gonna set that up for you? Man, what a mess! Freezing rain? 1, 2, 3, ... that's me counting my blessings. We had snow predicted, didn't happen. We had a high wind warning, 60 mph, didn't happen. It's cold, been in the teens for a few days but finally warming a bit, now. Might make freezing today! Hang in there, buddy!

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop we got a fire going in our fireplace insert. I do have a generator but with my foot would not try to get it out. Our youngest son would have done it and only lives 10 minutes away. But he lost power as well. Good news is the power came on about 2 hours ago. Just saw the damage to my neighbor's house. It almost split in half. Thankfully it did not come our way as it was a little closer. Feel bad for the neighbors.

I make 2 trips a day(no I do not trip LOL) down there. That is where the big screen TV is. Also a recliner where I can get my foot up easier. That was really good, Gary. I don't know if I will ever be around using software like this but what it does do is help me understand segmenting and designing further and I always appreciate that because it's like a nice little puzzle that I don't have to solve. heal well my friend

Thank you very much Jay. I think it is fun even if you do not make segmented turnings. I recall the days of no software for this but still possible to make segmented turnings. This just gives you a good vision and can make changes on the fly. Just another tool for sure. Doing ok here thank you, Gary

Thanks, Gary. Seeing how this software works is very helpful. I have been sitting of the fence about buying something ... so far I have been using a free segment calculator but, it doesn't let you see what the bowl will look like. I will have to give some thought about buying this package ... I am on a semi-fixed income so the decision is not always easy or simple.

I have the full suite of Woodturner Pro products. I much prefer Woodturner Pro over Segment Pro. I can do staves or customize each row with WP. Thanks for the video.

Looks like a really great package for the types of turnings you do and really appreciate seeing how it works. Since I'm exclusively a Mac and Linux operation (OK, my 92 year-old mother has a Windows machine on our network), I'll have to see if this runs in CrossOver. I'm kind of curious. Hope your healing is progressing well.

Great videos Gary and I wish you a speedy recovery. I see that the software generate the edge length but what/how do you measure 2.05 inch length? That would be 2 1/20 inches Do you use a special ruler or transfer to some other unit of measure or just rough guess that length to maybe just 2 inches?

Hi Chuck, Happy it helped. Most of the time I will hit glue it to a pre made tenon made from scrap. If I put a solid bottom on I hit glue the tenon to it. Gary

Gary, great explanation of the program. I just started using woodworking pro and I made two bowls so far. one of my hangups is cutting all the different rows to the different board widths. It drives me crazy trying to calculate how many rows of different widths I can cut from a particular board. Example- I have a 5.5 in board and I have 4 different width rows such as .5”, .75, 1.5 and 1.75. Is there a program or easy way to figure out a cutting diagram that will help me use the 5.5 in board efficiently? Again great videos! Thanks again

Thank you Bruce. I just add the widths in my head and sometimes stop if there is a scrap big enough for a wider width. Usually I will only have 1 or 2 wider rows. Normally the bottom 2. Not scientific but it works. Thanks for watching, Gary

I don't typically use more than one wood for a given vase and I have two table saws. I set the old one up to rip sticks and the good one with the DRO to crosscut segments. 1. Sort all the rings dimensions by board width and cut a stick 2 to 3 feet long at the widest board width you need. 2. Cut all the segments you need for that width. If you run out of stick first, rip another one and finish that segment set. 3. At some point, you'll have a full segment set for that width but have leftover stick. Either rip it down to the next narrower board width and start cutting that ring's segments or ignore the width change and start cutting segments a bit too wide, The excess will be on the inside and be turned away anyway. Every stick gets used up completely and I don't have to plan ahead to maximize wood use. I drove myself crazier when I tried to match up various board widths and lengths to the stock I had in front of me. I invariably came up short here and long there with a big pile of useless pieces of expensive wood several inches long.

I made the stop block you made in your earlier video and it's a great improvement over what I was using...I like bringing as much precision to my work as possible. Thanks! Looking forward to the Tinkercad video you alluded to, and I'm hoping you'll throw in a recommendation for a 3D printer!

Well getting all 3 programs is worth it because of the savings. Do you need all 3? Well no but myself I mostly use Woodturner Pro and Lamination Pro. Those 2 are very important to me. Segment Pro is a fantastic program and probably easer to get started on. I prefer Woodturner Pro just because You are in control of what you are making. So I do not want to sound like a salesman and get nothing for saying this but: If you buy two(which you should as you save a lot) for $30.00 more you get all 3. Download it and use it for free for 30 days is the best way to tell. Gary

I tried several free programs and some free trial programs before deciding Segment Pro was worth the money. When I mentioned it to my wife, she surprised me with the full program set and I'm glad she did. These tutorials are helping me get even more out of them.
