Wood Turning Large Tumbling Block Bowl Escher Style
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I turn a tumbling block bowl or maybe it is a platter using Walnut, Maple and Cherry.
I try to show my step by step method to cut and glue up the blank.
This creates a very interesting illusion. It gives many looks, including a stair step.
The process for gluing it together is time consuming but spread over a number of days it was not bad. The pieces all fit in place with only a few needing a slight adjustment.
There were 240 pieces used to make 80 blocks plus a few dozen more to fill in areas around the outside.
Finishes used:
Minwax sanding sealer and Polycyrlic
Acks Abrasive Paste and Polish/Restoring Paste
Tools used:
Bowl gouges and negative rake scrapers.

When I first saw one of these bowls, I couldn’t figure out what was supposed to be tumbling! The second time I changed my focus, and saw it! Then I tried to figure out how you did it., and what you did about the corners that were sticking up.Whew! I took me countless views and seeing various other types of segmenting to realize what you do. I gave up after that. Being able to figure all that out, what goes where and how completely overwhelms me!. I’m glad and impressed that you have figured it out, so you can produce such amazing pieces!

Thank you Danny and you are pretty much right about that. I have been watching TV(sort of) and something pops in my head. I have to write it down so I do not forget. Thank you Byron, Those fixtures force the joints together nicely. But the pieces have to be made to fit them just right or it will not work. First one of these I made I decided the individual fixtures were going to help. After I had the blocks glued I came up with making fixtures to hold 6 blocks at a time. So far it has been working out. Although this is only the 3rd one I have made. Thanks for watching, Gary
