Wood Turning Large Tumbling Block Bowl Escher Style

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I turn a tumbling block bowl or maybe it is a platter using Walnut, Maple and Cherry.
I try to show my step by step method to cut and glue up the blank.
This creates a very interesting illusion. It gives many looks, including a stair step.
The process for gluing it together is time consuming but spread over a number of days it was not bad. The pieces all fit in place with only a few needing a slight adjustment.
There were 240 pieces used to make 80 blocks plus a few dozen more to fill in areas around the outside.
Finishes used:
Minwax sanding sealer and Polycyrlic
Acks Abrasive Paste and Polish/Restoring Paste
Tools used:
Bowl gouges and negative rake scrapers.

When I first saw one of these bowls, I couldn’t figure out what was supposed to be tumbling! The second time I changed my focus, and saw it! Then I tried to figure out how you did it., and what you did about the corners that were sticking up.Whew! I took me countless views and seeing various other types of segmenting to realize what you do. I gave up after that. Being able to figure all that out, what goes where and how completely overwhelms me!. I’m glad and impressed that you have figured it out, so you can produce such amazing pieces!

Thank you Byron, Those fixtures force the joints together nicely. But the pieces have to be made to fit them just right or it will not work. First one of these I made I decided the individual fixtures were going to help. After I had the blocks glued I came up with making fixtures to hold 6 blocks at a time. So far it has been working out. Although this is only the 3rd one I have made. Thanks for watching, Gary

I spotted the knot. Whoa! That is an awesome bowl. Unfortunately, my left ankle is still bothering me pretty bad and so I can't stand on it to do anything out in my shop. Stay safe.

Thank you Harry. Sorry about your left ankle. I can relate as my left toe was in bad shape after I slipped bare foot and bruised it and also cut the pad on my foot right behind the toe. Feeling much better and hope yours does soon. Take care, Gary

I am starting one at the moment but not as big as yours because my lathe only takes 10 inch. I will probably end up with a 9 inch bowl. Thank you for the tips, I'm going to follow your instructions as near as I can with the wood I have and hopefully it turns out. If it ends up half as good as yours I'll be over the moon. Thanks again for a useful video.

Very impressive, Gary. I can really appreciate the many hours and steps it takes before the turning even begins. Add to that the times of tool sharpening and delicate cuts to achieve the shape and visual effect, the sanding steps, surface prep, base finish, more sanding and final finishing. Your descriptive video showed us all of that in 20 minutes. Nice work, Gary. Thanks for the wonderful video.
