Early Christianity on: The Omnipotence of God the Father

To be omnipotence means to be all-powerful. Is there anything impossible for God? Can God create a rock so heavy, He could not lift it? Basically, if God is all-powerful, is there anything He cannot do?

By the way which Samaritan Pentateuch version do you use for your studies?

There aren't many English translations of the Pentateuch. Also, there is no way for me to know whether I'm using a good translation. I've heard that George Lamsa's is very good, so I use his.

Man was made in the image of God, man can choose right or wrong. God could lie but he has chosen to never lie. He chose his position, not that they are beyond his ability.

Thank you for commenting. That is an interesting take. Could God's ability to lie be the same as a human's ability to fly? That is, just as humans are unable to fly, even if they decided never to fly, isn't it the same for God? It doesn't matter what God chooses not to lie or not, it is not in God's nature to lie. What do you think? God bless!

When one starts to theologize God, one starts to create a God after his human image and likeness. Sad but true.

That "can God create a rock that he can't lift" doesn't make sense. Either omnipotence isn't limited by logic (and can do whatever he pleases by simply rewriting the laws of the universe). Or omnipotence is limited by logic in which case he would still be omnipotent by said definition.

Lamarck Leland In truth, it is written that God cannot lie. This establishes that even God does not violate a most basic principle of logic. He is true to Himself and to His word. What is that principle called? The law of non-contradiction? Still, it is not sin for God to be true to Himself, since He is already pure and holy. For man, it is possible to be true to self and be at fault, when he is true to self at a contradiction to God. I am not saying God is governed by logic, but rather, logic comes from Him. Logic would actually not be possible if He weren’t Himself logical.

@@lamarckleland5731 It doesn't matter. If you think omnipotence isn't limited by logic then you can't argue against it with logical contradictions. If you think omnipotence is limited by logic then there is no point in arguing logical contradictions.

Thanks for asking. If you enjoy and can understand the KJV, stay with what is familiar. There are a lot of good translations that are worth looking into. What is most important is to stay away from the terrible translations. You might want to look into the ASV. The ASV an extremely accurate (much more accurate than the KJV). As for me, I personally prefer the HCSB (today called the CSB). I'm familiar with most of the popular translations. If you have any questions about any of them, I am happy to share what I know. God bless!

The question is contrary to human reason because by human nature, man is limited in our finiteness and nature. To pose such a question is rooted in philosophical mess! If you reduce the Omnipotence of God, then all else about God would become arbitrary. When God created all things...all things were made perfect! Genesis 1 Read 1 Corinthians 2: Spiritual wisdom versus the natural man's wisdom.

built4speed101 It’s simpler even than that. The rock question is rooted in self-contradiction. It can be reduced to saying, “Can God be omnipotent and make Himself not-omnipotent?” It sounds clever but is simply foolish prattle.

Hmm. I guess I don't completely understand what was going on with Cain and Abel's sacrifices because I am under the assumption that God showed favoritism. Something to study because I must not be seeing it the right way.

Yes, the situation between Cain and Abel is interesting. The Scriptures do not directly say why God approved Abel's offering and rejected Cain's offering. I know there is much more to that story in the Septuagint's account of Cain and Abel. I have the opinion that God did not show favoritism. Instead, I would guess that there was some standard that God had given Cain and Abel... and Cain went against God's instructions. God bless!

@@PostApostolicChurch I am a few years late to the conversation, but I too agree that God didn't show favoritism. I am speculating that Cain and Abel's sacrifice was meant to redeem them of Adam's sin. However, Cain's sacrifice was meager in comparison to Abel's. God even tells Cain that his sacrifice was rightfully brought, but was not divided rightly. So Cain murders Abel. Further damning his own future lineage, and Abel never had offspring that would have carried his remission. Which leads genealogy to Seth, who did not sacrifice anything. However this might be why future descendants of Seth and the Israelites sacrifice animals in tribute. A continuation of Abel's sacrifice. This is of course just my own speculation of the story.
