Great video, very detailed.. my 530d got stolen and now that we found it can't find either the keys, so we tried changing the ews and key cylinder but nothing.. I think we are going to demolish it if we can't figure out.. mechanics asks a very expensive price to fix..

I have a 2000 BMW Z3 I am trying to revive. It sat for 3 years. Installed a new battery, changed fuel filter, new gas with gas cleaner, new spark plusg and boots. It starts but dies a few seconds later. Could it be the EWS (Immobilizer)?

That was awesome. Very informative video man. I am currently having trouble with my e46 2000 323i. It’s got 245k miles on it. Runs like a rapped date. Although the past week or so I’ve been running into a no crank no start situation. So i jumped a black wire with another black wire that has a blue line and the car cranks but doesn’t start. I’m assuming maybe because I have the module unplugged. Idk but either way man. This was a great video man.

Great video. Can confirm EWS f**ks with your car in variety of ways. I have 2002 E39 3.0d and recently swapped engine and auto gearbox for the same engine but manual gearbox. Had the "no crank - no start" situation until I searched the net and found out that the clutch sensor (neutral safety switch) that I wired in was bad. Connected 2 wires on the sensor (black/blue & purple / yellow) and the car started with automatic DME. Now just need to code it so that it knows it has manual gearbox. Even tried swapping EWS & DME from the manual car and trying to hold the key as near as possible to the ring sensor on barrel but to no avail. Didn't want to change the key ignition barrel so left it as it is.

Thanks for the breakdown. In a no crank situation with my 2002 Z3 5 speed after changing the radio from factory. I don't know if that has something to do with the EWS. Any idea if that's part of the system checks? Can be cleared via OBD? Thanks

great information. MY X5 shot the engine and i replaced it. M54b30 its cranking but no spark no start. So far 2 mechanics have tried everything but to know avail. diagnosis will show iterms like sensors, throtle but after changing them still no spark no start. Any advise please.

I have the 2005 BMW X3 3.0I. It was starting until I took to the electrical shop. The temperature gage was reading hot but car was not running hot. Suddenly it was stuck in park. Mechanic said it was the key reading theft mode..he said it wouldn't start. I drove it there after tow truck driver released from park. Now it won't start. Says he changed the computer, wires and 3 modules, which keep burning out.

I just had a new key made for my e46 m3 and when i go to start it theres a huge delay. Is this a sign of it goin out or just cause i had a new key made. It never does not start but there almost always a semi long delay. I had to send my ews and my original key to the guy that made the key so he could program the new key to it as well.

If you have some time I really could use your help with what I am going through. Because right now everyone knows more than I do. I have a 06 BMW x5 4.4i and my fuel pump stopped working so a friend of mine jumped the relay inside the glove box and it worked. I drove it home and parked it. That was 5; months ago. Now my car will crank but won't start and it's saying that it's in limp mode. Another person said it's is thinking that someone stole it and the immobilizer stopped talking to the rest of the modules. Now I don't have a really good scanner, just the one out of Walmart. Is there a way to get my car started I am out of ideas. And on top of all this,I am moving and I hate to leave my car. Here

I watched the whole video even though I had no clue what you were talking about(my fault, not yours). I put the key fob in my 2006 330i to start the car. Dash lighted up but no start. An icon appeared of a red steering wheel with a padlock. I pulled the fob back out and reinserted it. Dash went blank , no power and the fob would not come out. I was able to repo over the fob slot and retrieve the fob. Now the car has no power throughput the vehicle. It’s completely shut down. I removed the battery and charged it overnight, even though it showed full. Put battery back in next day. Nothing. What do I do next short of having it towed to a very expensive shop? Thanks!

I have a 2006 mini R50 and am currently dealing with the same "no crank/no start". I've seen there are services online that will send you a replacement key and EWS that are sync'd together and are "plug and play" fixes. They are rather pricey and seem to be a gamble. I'm looking into my options and am hoping I can find a person who is familiar in programming that can provide honest service.

I would like to know how to rectify the problem with a possible EWS situation. First the car wouldn't crank so I bridged the ews as you instructed and it now cranks but won't keep running it starts then stalls...BMW e36 m3 evo3 3.2. 1997

This is exactly what’s going on with my 95 e36…drove it the previous day and the next day it was just dead…jacked it up and touched the starter with a screwdriver and the starter was fine…replaced the ignition switch and still nothing so yeah it’s either the ews or dme

That's a really good question. I honestly don't really know if it can be fixed or not. I'd imagine that with enough determination it could be fixed, but every case I've seen of the ews module going bad has involved replacing it instead of trying to fix it

You can send the ECU to a BMW software tuner and they will remove and disabled the EWS system in the ECU. This is common on engine swapped cars needing the same situation

They're all varied based on what car you're working with. But I found the designations by looking at some documentation describing each of them

Brunboi, I have a 2001 E38 and the car starts fine but when I turn the car off and attempt to restart it will not start or crank. I have to disconnect the battery for 30 seconds and then it will restart again. Hey, so I don't have any firsthand experience working with E63's at all, but I did make a video that goes over CAS, which is pretty much the exact same thing as the EWS modules in E63's. You can get the EWS disabled in the ECU. Also a locksmith can check if you have still got a signal from your key. Also make sure you have 14volts

Can this be the cause of a locked up ignition? All of a sudden my key can’t turn the ignition M lost

It can be used by eliminating the ews by bypassing the cable and making the car work is an inconvenience.

It's like my car now asking me for a code on the dash but radio is turning on check all the fuses all good I can only see the blank screen on the radio instead of the code pad

Is bridging that a sort of solution or bypass ? Or is that just the to detect if your ews is bad?

its a bypass, but you need to program the ews out of the dme, because the dme expects there to be an ews module even if you disconnect it

Wow all this is some high tec stuff that's for sure well your video helped me out to understand my situation a little more but still don't know the exact problem..maybe u could shine some light on me. Ok so I have a e46 325i 2001 that I had added some small mods and when I put all back together lost the key had one made and unlocked and close normal but gave me problem starting for hours on in with no crank no start all lights turn on like normal. It does not click ether I checked startes fuse and also did a direct starter and it's good . So yup that's where I'm at any ideas on what to check next?well buddy if possible a little direction would be great help... thanks for the video bye

Thank you for the kind words! Also I wish I could shed some light on your issue man, I totally understand how frustrating it must feel. Unfortunately, I know nearly nothing about diagnosing e46's, as I've never worked on them. Not really sure what sort of systems are at play here that could be causing your issue. It's a bit of a shot in the dark, but my best guess is that maybe your ring antennae isn't able to communicate with the key to verify the passcode so it can pass it through to the DME?

Thanks for ur response so I changed the ring and same thing I got a code of p0604 ....question I got a 330i 01 right if I take the ecu and ews can I put that in this 325i 01 and have it work

@@straightup6027 If my memory serves correct then you should be able to do that but you'll need the ring as well, because they all communicate between each other via EWS3. When you put the key in the barrel, the ring sends a code to the EWS module, which then checks it with the ECU in order to make sure they're all the same. Also yeah, p0604 looks to be the PCM, that sucks man. Such a pain to diagnose these cars sometimes only to find out the problem is completely different than you thought. If swapping the EWS, ECU, and ring don't work, then you might have to replace the PCMif the RAM is fried

Ok wow I didn't know the ring had to be the same one as well and included in the combo ews,ecu ,key from my other car I'm taking it out from so the ring that's already there has to be replaced since it's not universal. Ok so that's maybe why it didn't even cranck.. What is the pcm ram that your talking about thought ram and memory where inn the ecu??confused wow ok ima check that out..i bought a ecu from this dude on offer up that deletes the ews and at the same time comes with a tune to get some extra ponys out of it.. this should really fix the issue if it is the ews kossing the problem. I have a 96 328i that wouldn’t crank until I put that jumper wire in the EWS plug behind the glove box and now it cranks but won’t turn over. Any suggestions ? 😭

If you don't have EWS, then I would recommend starting with making sure that your starter is getting power when you turn the key. If it is, then the issue could be related to your PCM or your DME, and it would be worth seeing if you can check whether those are functional or not. Best of luck!

! ! PLEASE FIRST of all, understand that this error is also remembered by the cluster. So unmounting the driver's dashboard WILL START THE CAR ONCE, but not the second time, because the error will be manifested again by the mob. So now comes what I wanted to tell you all: GET OUT THE EWS and spray clean the connector some time, coupling it a few times will make the oxides from the pins to run off, and electric signals will travel again to the car computer. WORKED FOR ME. A little "deodorant" :)) No wires, no jumper, no more headaches.

replace ews module, with a new one and programmed by bmw or buy used and get the ews, dme ring antenna as well as the keys. you can also just bypass the ews module and program it out of the dme so that the dme doesnt expect an ews module anymore

In your next video can you talk about unlocking EWS 3.3 once the anti theft systems locks

You could be having a series of problems including your ews and fuse box under the passenger seat. This generation of bmw is prone to water getting into the interior especially the e39s. I pulled the carpet back in mine and the whole thing was rusted and falling apart. I replaced the whole thing and the dash and other interior electronics started to work again but now im having a no crank problem aswell. Wish i could help you with the no start but i hope that info was helpful

Yes. I had a 2000 BMW Z3 and about 2013 I experienced that. It turned out that the metal part of the key had worn out so I needed a new key made at the dealership. I needed to bring the title to them to prove ownership and they gave me a new key a few days later (had to be shipped). It cost about $100 then. I don't think it had anything to do with the Immobilizer (EWS system), only the actual metal being worn down too much.

The ecu checks for it whenever you turn the key if you have a stock tune. It's possible to disable that check though if you use a piece of tuning software called romraider

That's honestly not bad! Unfortunately in the US we don't have a service like that, as far as I'm aware. A trip to the dealer would end up costing a couple hundred usd easy lol
