I’m doing this on my RG build. Any concerns about when to change the front sprocket due to teeth wear? How will you know ?

Modern o-ring chains keep the lube on the link axles. Cleaning and lubing an o-ring chain keeps the sprockets and rollers happy on the outside. I've had an x-ring DID go over 30,000 miles on a bike with 195hp.

If it's an Oring chain than the lube is just for rust protection because the lube is never going to get past the seal and into the joint. Over lubing is not a concern because of debris attraction, just watch Vickers Tactical vid on over lubing a firearm. Excess lube will just sling off and make a mess. The key is cleanliness as grit will wear out the chain.

Thank you for your honest opinion brother. Subscribed and liked! Just ordered myself a SuperSprox Chain Kit from Speed Kings for my 2011 dyna fxdb, with the 48T rear sprocket. Any thoughts or info that you might know about this setup? Was in the 350$ range.

Any updates on how it performed?

What is your R P M s in 6 gear at seventy miles hour.

I had one on my ‘04 and it was nothing but problems. In theory it sounded like a great mod but in practice, especially if you ride a lot, just stick to the belt. But hey that’s just my 2 pennies, to each his own. Keep up the good work DD.

I only have Evos and Shovels but I'm curious what you ran into. I'm curious what you ran into. I do think this video is better than many because, one, you have to make sure you use high quality compenents and, two, it has to be installed perfectly.

Would the OEM belt guard still fit and clear the chain ? Eliminating the lube flinging for the most park ? I bet you could cut the rear end of it off to show off the sprocket as well.

Hmm, I wonder if anyone makes an aftermarket one or not. I think I remember kitsul making a chain guide that looked snazzy too, it might have been that guy that races his Dyna on the track, he's got videos up on here I can't remember his name though. He's the dude that makes the 2 inch drop down tripple trees for raising the front end up if that rings any bells. How's the 24/51 ratio treating you on the freeways ? 6th gear usable for you under 85mph at all?

@@dynademos good point, I didn't even consider an increase or decrease in sprocket size. Bikes looking snazzy man! Any plans on brake component upgrades any time in the near future ? It would be nice to hear your opinion on galfer vs lyndall or what ever you end up choosing.

Got a 97 Dyna Wide Glide belt drive and and everybody tells me when I take off that I ride a wheelie I don't believe them but they say I picked the front end off the ground with the belt not even trying to ride a wheelie

That chain is rated for 1400cc, right? Would it be compatible with a 1870cc/114 M8 Motor?

Pass The Mayo my engine is a 110 which is a lil less than yours and I’ve had no issues. most chain kits offered from other companies I’ve found use bikemaster 530 chains which have less tensile strength I know it’s not a perfect answer but I’ll say I do not think u would have an issue but I would say consult a bike shop u trust

That chain, especially in 530, works in superbike applications which are almost double the HP of the 114 motor so itll be good

So i just completed my belt to chain conversion, on my 2010 Harley Cross Bones mind you im 59 yrs old. This is a very simple cut and dry set up with some good knowledge of your bike, with that said OMFG the main shaft nut, 2 days and 3 brokern breaker bars, (18 in snap on, then a 36in home made thingy, then a thing they called bigg bertha 48 in long piece of steel bar w a 1/2 drive on it) i started to cut this nut off and that actually loosened it up so i could ratchet it off finally. To me the cons only are doing it your self lol the pros are everything. I have a 200mm tire and a 3/4 in belt .... WWTT??? so i broke my 3rd belt and said it is time for a chain. and so far i love every link on it and yes i tried impacts, large impacts, and heat....

7K miles without adjusting the chain is very impressive - it must be a good chain ! Keeping it clean and properly lubed is paramount especially if your motor is hopped-up. With the standard 110 engine only producing lower power figures and your conservative riding style not stressing it then it'll probably last a lot longer than it would with high power and and being ridden hard. Lack of maintenance and wheelies etc will take it's toll though especially with 120 plus power figures. I think your advice to not over use the chain lube is very wise - that and running it too tight may well be where I went wrong - plus when I used chains 20 or more years ago they may not have been of such high quality..... 7k miles and no adjustment is great !!!

Thakery absolutely standard chains back in the day were different and most were not o ring and would wear faster than the new and improved chains technology has gone a long way 🤘🏽

@@dynademos I did try 'O' ring chains but it was 'back in the day' so maybe the rest of the chain was the same quality materials as a standard chain. A friend fitted a chain kit a few years ago to an 88 incher and was constantly adjusting it. He did it for economy reasons though so maybe he just got what he paid for ! I will consider it if my belt fails, but until then I'll keep my fingers crossed. Although my Dyna has over 120 hp I don't ride that hard. Good luck.

A modern high quality o-ring chain will last as long as a belt, at least, and you don't have to tear half your bike apart to change one out. All you need is a chain vice that fits in your pocket and maybe some extra links. Downshifting more than anything else stretches them. Outside of that you should get at least 10k before you need to adjust it unless you're really banging on it. I just keep mine dry and lube it with WD-40 if it gets wet. They will throw whatever you lube them with, for sure. Still can't figure out why people like belts other than that's how the bikes come. I can't think of a single advantage to a belt drive other than they're cheaper but I've yet to need to replace a modern o-ring chain,and my oldest one is 50k miles deep. BUT, you better make sure those sprockets are dead on balls lined up. Chains are far less forgiving. They won't tolerate or survive slop in alignment. Make sure those sprockets are spaced perfectly and the chain tracks dead center on both. You'll waste a chain fast if it's not perfectly aligned and adjusted and it will waste your sprockets at the same time.

@@jberschi Due to the amount of torque on my (hopped-up) 1990 Harley Sportster, a chain would last maybe 4k miles no matter how well I cleaned and lubricated it. The sprockets were in perfect alignment as well. 'O' ring chains - 20 years ago - were no better. On my 2006 Sportster (also hopped-up) which has about 50% more power the belt was doing fine at 55k miles. I did renew it when I changed the pulleys as the rear one was quite worn, and the front one because I went to a larger (aftermarket) pulley to raise the gearing. You may well be right about the wear being caused on the overun on your bike but I do not use the engine/trans to slow the bike as with a (raised comp.ratio) Harley all that would happen is the rear wheel would lock up and the bike'd dump you on your ass ! Here in England most of our roads are not straight and wide and such riding ('downshifting' to brake) isn't a very good idea !

Expensive conversion ?

If you pay for it to be done yes very, if you do it yourself, you could do it for probably 5-700$ in parts.

Why do a chain conversation if you don't wheelie? The stock belt is superior to the chain, unless you wanted to gear down for a different ratio to perhaps make stunting easier. I cant imagine wanting to gear up an fxdls. I have the same bike and the stock gearing is pretty good. It pulls effortlessly past 100mph all the way to 130. And it power wheelies in first easily. If youre not doing stunts, then all you've done is added uneeded maintenance to an already high maintenance machine.

I've snapped many belts , I went chain years ago , belts are for holding up your pants imo

If you want close to stock, then keep it stock. Belts if properly adjusted in maintenance intervals can last the life of the bike, harley switched to belts for a reason, they're almost maintenence free and super durable, there's really no added benefit if all you do is ride, sure if you have a $10,000 151ci kit that's different, and yes if a belt snaps you are screwed but if a chain snaps that's going to destroy the entire primary cover like a gladiator swinging a mace and the bike will be sitting in a pool of oil with daylight shining through it so being able to repair the chain with a link will be the last thing on your mind in that moment, just food for thought on chains, they look cool but that's about it 🤷‍♂️

I ran the factory belt on my 2011 street glide. 128hp 127tq. Almost 80,000 miles when I sold it. Went threw a lot of back tires from hole shots and never broke a belt. But yeah the chain does look bad ass. 👍

3 belts in 2 .5 years , its not always , adjustment and such, but they put stock a 200 mm tire on a 3/4 in belt, but yet my 05 has a 130 w a 1.5 in belt....ya that belt has 160,000 miles on, i cant get 5000 on this lil one...

Chains are lame 😂 belts are where it’s at buddy

Ya kno I I were more awake at time of me commenting I prolly would have read that into it. But then I was confused at first coz it said we worked together....lol.. All good. And I never have watched that video...

In reality there 2 reasons for chain conversion. 1 if you stunt. 2 if your pushing power. If you dont do thaf. Your belt should last you a very long time no maintenance and ease of use. You didnt neex a chsin.
