@ The prophecy is a lie. Paul is just a Bene Gesserit. Bene Gesserits can foresee. They can survive a poison so he could survive the water of life. And he is trained by his mother who is also a Bene Gesserit. That training made him capable of riding a worm. He was trained to be quick. So Paul is just an ordinary Bene Gesserit who used the prophecy for his will.

It was against their tradition to waste water, so giving water to the dead would have been taboo. The elder bowed because he felt that Paul read his mind like a god, likely recanting a nightmare the elder had never spoken of.

I wonder why I don't hear "Space Mohammed" or even "Space Saladdin" a lot but I do hear a ton of "space Jesus"? The book is heavy with Islamic imagery and surface theology: Jihad, Lisan Al - Gaib, Mahdi, "long live the martyrs!" (not fighters), Bilal Al Kaifa, Chai Hulud (Shay-Khulud in Arabic) and of course "lead them to paradise" (which is used the same in Islam, meaning death or salvation) and in Christianity one would use "heaven" and so forth. A casual viewer would also pick up on the spice melange being an analogue for oil and Tha Fremen for the Bedouin Arabs and Paul as their T.E. Lawrence. Sure, the movie scrubs much of it but it's still there.

Mohammed is considered a prophet but not a deity to be worshipped. Jesus on the other hand is viewed by his followers as a god in human form. Paul's path leads him to becoming worshipped as a god so he's closer to Jesus than Mohammed in that respect.

Dune, the book, is split into books and one of them is called The Prophet so again, it's a nod closer to Mohammed then to Jesus, but I take your point. But it isn't just the Islamic influence of Dune which Frank Herbert used intentionally. Paul is a warrior Emperor and his followers, his Fedaykin (Fedayeen in Arabic; group of soldiers willing to die for their cause. They were used to great effect in Afghanistan against the Soviet's) swarm the imperium, converting millions to Paul's religion and killing billions. That doesn't sound like Jesus but like Mohammed. It's not a difficult observation to make and yeah, Paul is not a 1:1 with Mohammed but he isn't meant to be. The Fremen (Free-men) in the book are descendants of Zensunni wanderers, Zen Buddhists and Sunni as in Sunni Muslims. Christianity gets a cursory role in the religious life of the imperium. The Benne Gesserit are an analogue of the Jesuit order. Paul has an Orange Catholic Bible but that belongs to Paul's feudal upbringing, suggesting that whereas Paul is descendant of a European-style system, he goes to Space Arabia.

@@DoroteoVilla Actually Bene Geserit role is not so much Catholic nor Christian based, since Christianity is Patriarchal, while Bene Gesserit are Matriarchal. Fremen have mostly Christian and Islamic imagery.

The vast majority of Muslims who even see these similarities wouldn’t dare to associate some movie character to their prophet and definitely wouldn’t verbalise that similarity and in terms of media Jesus comparisons are far more common to the point even non religious people constantly take note of them in movies and shows. Ofcourse for Christian’s they’re also not as reluctant to label something as Jesus like even when something is far more like Islam and Mohammed it will likely by the vast majority be labelled as Jesus.

Depends on which paperback you have. In the audiobook, Paul gives longer version of this speech after he rides the sandworm and the Fedaykin expect Paul to challenge Stilgar for leadership of Sietch Tabr. It's an awesome speech except it is longer and much more controlled and if I remember it, Gurney attacks Lady Jessica immediately after, believing she was the one who betrayed House Atreides.
