They also look like their first instinct is to stand their ground even against the worms, and they hesitate for a few moments - until it dawns on them their deaths wouldn't even slow the worms down - before running. Which, to my mind, shows these are really dedicated and ballsy fighters. They are touted as being a superbly trained and disciplined infantry force, and they _do_ show it repeatedly, including here. But that doesn't change that they are 'just' infantry, they've been taken by surprise, and they are being charged by a... er... mega-worm-cavalry?.... which they can't even scratch, backed by a force of ready-to-die fanatics that outnumbers them. Even great discipline has limits, and their training would, in this situation, have told them that running and trying to survive - and maybe selling their lives in some actually meaningful way later - was in fact the best thing they could do.

They were not nuked. It is expressly forbidden to use House atomics against any members of the Landsraad. The only reason Paul got away with this is because he aimed his at the shield wall and made sure nobody died from the atomics themselves.

@@grizzlyunicorn76Indeed, but the gullets of full-grown sand worms are basically massive blast furnaces that evaporate the water and dilute it with sand and mineral content. More to the point, it’s a matter of toxicity, volume vs scale, a handful of humans are not toxic enough (not enough water volume) to kill a massive adult or elder worm. Juvenile sand worms are killed to harvest the Water of Life by fully submerging them, so there’s definitely a breakpoint point where water becomes toxic at a high enough volume. Tossing an adult worm in an ocean, for instance, would surely kill it. For instance, WE eat many things that at high enough doses would be toxic to us, but at low doses we don’t even notice, or just get an upset stomach if we’re particularly sensitive to something. For instance, two teaspoons of nutmeg can be hazardous to a human, but less than that is just a common nutty flavored spice. Too much cinnamon can be toxic as well (ironic since Spice is said to smell and taste a bit like cinnamon). Taking a couple acetaminophen won’t harm you and can relieve pain. Take too much in one day or one dose, and you can suffer serious, even fatal, liver damage. So yeah, might be some worms with upset stomachs after the battle, but few if any fatalities. Funny though that the Fremen ride their gods to the point of exhaustion, poison and kill their young for a ritual toxin, and micro-dose them with water using them as weapons. Not the nicest ways to worship your godly avatars. 😆

The reason the Baron didn't know was because there are no satellites over Arrakis, this is said in the first film. The book explains this is because the Fremen bribe the spacing guild with access to spice so they don't put satellites up and give away their true number. The only way the Baron would ever know is if they sent troops to the South itself but they can't because their aircraft can't cross the storms (only the worms can), so they're literally blind and as you say they basically assume there's hardly any life in the South

That standard bearer (the man carrying the flag) must have felt truly blessed going into Arakeen like that. Think about it: he is carrying the banner of the Lisan al Giab, a hawk motif (hawks being one of the only non-Arakkis lifeforms that can survive there), following the man who trained Mua'duib how to fight! If that wasn't enough, he was there when Gurney Halleck fought and easily defeated the Beast Rabban in single combat! If that standard banner were a Southerner that moment might have been the dream of his ancestors and here he is, fulfilling that dream of freeing Arakkis under the watchful eye of the Lisan al Giab. Devotion like that is a powerful weapon if wielded correctly. It's no wonder then that the Harkonnen never stood a chance.

People calling them religious fanatics… as if something is off with these people… but what is the difference between fanatics and “normal” people? Well “normal” people are just easier to get along with because their motives/values are predictable since they can be applied for the majority, but it doesn’t make “normal” people better, they can also destroy anything in their path to achieve their goals. “Normal” people worship power/money/spice and fanatics worship idea/freedom/mahdi… so both of these groups are fanatics in their own way. It is just the majority is scared of religious fanatics because they have different values.

Was disappointed with the second film. It seemed slow but at the same time rushed and hard to follow at certain points. The dialogue wasn't the most interesting, with little focus on the politicking of Dune, which could have been so inciteful as to what in the shit was going on behind the scenes. The stakes didn't seem high at any point for our heroes, with Paul and the Fremen essentially walking over any obstacle. Seemed like half the dialogue was concerned on "Is he or isn't the prophet" instead of something actually interesting. The end battle also felt like they just wanted to take the quickest way to the final point. I mean the Emperors Blades are made out to be absolute units in the first film, but then crumble away like wet paper bags in the second, with no explanation as to why. I get that a Godzilla tier worm has it's advantages, but they could have made the actual fighting easier to follow and some resistance put up by the Sardukar. Was like a futuristic replay of the Battle of Winterfell in GOT. Felt there was a lot more potential for an absolute epic, but much like the second Avatar, it just kind of focused on the visuals and Trailer hype to carry the movie. Not much to say about this movie other than it felt like they just rode on the gravy train of the first one... Some nice moments but overall, a let down.

That makes no sense! First movie has made it clear Harkonnens have bombs and lasers in this universe, also they have the missiles. What was the issue throwing a solid bomb or a missile (like 10,000 lbs) in a giant throat of this worm (2:43)? It would be hard, probably impossible to miss, even if you are drunk. Let's suppose the worms are immortal, but why didn't they kill a crew guiding the worms then? They have dozens armed ships and Atreides/Fremen have none. What was the problem disorganizing those worms? Also, if you know that your enemy (Fremen) is not protected by the shields... why on Earth nobody thought about using firearms? They do exist in this movie! And the brigade of soldiers armed with automatic rifles and machine guns would absolutely change the outcome! The heavily crowded Fremen army armed with blades would lose 80% of the manpower y before reaching an Emperor. And the worms crew would be killed or afraid to come close. Emperor & Baron should have destroyed Paul if the movie had been logical and not contradicting itself. This battle should have been scripted better. It's not even the ballte. Battle is the mutual action when both sides do their best to win. Here, one side did nothing after suddenly gedding blind/incompetent and other did everything.

@@brucebanner52 Eh, lots of American accents in this movie. She just came off more as like 'angry college student protesting an increase in campus parking fees' than 'wise daughter of an ancient and proud warrior culture'.

This is awful, warfare back in mediaeval or ancient times. Hannibal or Scipio Africanus would laugh at the tactics (or lack of). Frank Herbert must be looking down from heaven and weeping at this interpretation of his masterpiece.
