You made a point. Reading the book means watching a movie in your head. Its a scifi novel, set in far ahead future. Some things can't be shown bc we don't know them. Imho fight scenes in the movie are difficult as the book described them neither. There are great warriors on the atreides, but without chance against sardaukers. But sardaukers are joke for fremen. How to show a great warrior defeated by a greater one defeated by an even greater one? Btw: i'm satisfied with ornithopter's optics, too. Visually, this movie doesn't disappoint.

I can’t help recalling the way the wings were described as more bird-like, especially on take-off when they would extend out and cup the air, and the interleaving trailing edges mimicking feathers. Paul is not in denial, he knows that the population of Arrakis has been seeded by Bene Geserit ahead preachers centuries or millenia ago and the "Prophecy" is exactly told in a form, that it fits on a Bene Geserit Concubine and her Child. He knows fully well, that he and his mother will abuse said seeding and instrumentalise the Fremen for their cause. Dune is not a Story about an Messiah that comes to an enslaved world to free them, but about how power structures (like the Bene Geserit, CHOAM etc) form and abuse their sorroundings over time for their gain. Paul is not chosen by destiny, he chooses his destiny (via conforming to the seeded prophecy) and abuses the gained influence and power for his own gain. In the Books he makes that very clear on several occasions.

The Butlerian Jihad´s were not against a machine intelligence (that is just made up bullshit by Brian Herbert to milk his fathers work) but were waged by a religious extremist movement that rejected artificial intelligence supporting human society, against the rest of human society wich was okay with the reliance on AI. The Butlerian Jihadists were purists, rejecting the "rule of technology" over our daily life (what is ment here is, that AI took over most of the mundane and repetitive tasks, leaving Humanity to endulge their desires and be "lazy" not the Matrix style bullshit Brian cooked up decades after his Father died). 2. His son Leto II was the result of Pauls choices, not his destiny. The same with Leto II who made active choices (again he chose his destiny, not destiny chose him) 3. Being a semi Kwisatz Haderach is also not destiny or chosen for him, he is just the result of 10k years of active high level inbreeding of the Bene Geserit Eugenics Programm. The Kwisatz Haderach is basicly just the mystified endgoal of Homo Surperior breeding programms. (basicly the fantasy equivalent of what the Nazis and partially the US tried) The options to choose for Pauls Son Leto II are the result of Pauls decisions prior. There is no predeterminism or destiny at play in the series. Just Humans fucking up again and again and justifying themselves with prophecies and religion. All this, embedded in a neo feudal fascist empire and society that rejects every technology and achievement that made it possible for said society to emerge in the first place and has to find ways around the self imposed limits. The Books (and Movie) have a thick underlying political and societal message. Fascism, Authoritarianism/Totalitarianism are bad. What Paul did, was to abuse said prophecy for his own gain and to conduct his Feud with the Harkonnen and the House Corrino. Due to that, he formed a Korps of radicalised and fanatised elite soldiers, that then became his legion commanders after his ascension to the Throne. That resulted in him loosing control of his radicalised military, wich performed a crusade across the Imperium to convert other worlds. Yes, that glared out at me that he mentioned the Shield Wall and we then immediately see the edge structure of Arrakeen. But the scene immediately before that is them flying over rock peaks, so at this stage I'm assuming that it is those that are being referred to, but that the timing of the dialogue was a bit misplaced. Either way, it was jarring enough for me to pull me out of the movie a bit, and it would definitely confuse anyone not familiar with what the Shield Wall actually is. @@tsopmocful1958 You can see the mountain parts of the shield wall literally as soon the artificial part shows up on screen. In this movie, there's an artificial wall filling a gap in the surrounding rock wall. It was jarring to me too, but I think it works because the book didn't explain the shield wall very well; when it first comes up there's no mention that it's a natural rock formation, and we don't get a detailed description of what the shield wall actually is until the attack on Arrakeen. Because of this, the way characters talk about the shield wall feels inconsistent, and until the attack scene I wasn't sure what exactly the wall was supposed to be. I think making it part mountain and part literal wall works here because of that ambiguity in the book.

I like how the ornithopters have been designed. In the books the descriptions are quite vague, and the few we're given hints that the wing structures are somewhat bird-like. Yet I always thought that bird-like flapping wing wouldn't be practical especially on a world with a lot of airbourne dust and sand., and it seems Dune Part One's makers felt the same as I did. A dragonfly/ insectoid design, merged with a helicopter, is a pretty good alternative. What I've seen of the film ( mostly clips) has a very real here-and-now feel to it, and this 'thopter design fits in with that. Denis Villeneuve and his people have done a good job bringing this classic SF novel to life: let's hope Part Two is equally good!

The director deadass made the film feel REALISTIC. Like you actually imagine yourself in it. Its so fucking immersive its insane bruh.

Not really….your probably making that assumption based on modern material and manufacturing techniques where as, this is a whole different planet not earth…and leaving aside it’s a sci-fi film for a sec, they most likely have the raw materials as well as the technology to not just build but carry out repairs as needed….I mean let’s face it there is interplanetary travel so chances are there are trade agreements with other planets/peoples meaning, just like how we trade on earth between countries, they probably do the same (so upgrading parts, getting better tech etc)…so I don’t think it would be that difficult to maintain

  • @RayPall

@@friktionrc I'm basing my assumption on the fact, that those dragonfly-like wings would need a lot of moving parts that must be perfectly in sync to achieve symmetric lift. As long as the ornithopter is not self-repairing or indestructible, those moving parts would require a lot of maintenance, especially on a desert planet where dust and sand reduce the reliability of anything mechanical.

Having said that, I now understand why, any physics aside, we probably wouldn't use them. The blades of a helicopter remain at a fixed height well above a person's outstretched hands. At least in these, the wing tips dip low enough to pound anyone into the dirt who gets too close. Yes, you could raise them, but I for one am already suspicious of helicopter blades spinning fast enough to not see them very well. I don't think I'd want to take my chances with variable height wings!

Then the Ornithopters, cannot be said enough how well they are designed, modelled, sound, everything. Then the journey to Arrakeen with the impactful (Fremen?) drums, andI especially love the last drum that fades away as we look much further to the horizon. They thought of everything and I am willing to say this is one of the best movies ever made. Not pointing to the adaptation, but the production, the thinking ahead, the shots, everthing. On top of that you then get the adaptation, the acting, the soundtrack, so many things. Simply a masterpiece, and my personal best and favorite experience in theater EVER!

Please read the books, they are so full of intrigue that the movies have a hard time encapsulating in such short time frames. You will enjoy them, I'm sure. I read Dune when it came out in '65. I just reread Dune again after seeing this movie. Followed by Dune Messiah, and am in the middle of Children Of Dune. There are six altogether from Frank Hebert that you can find in a set. In chronological order: Dune (1965) Dune Messiah (1969) Children of Dune (1976) God Emperor of Dune (1981) Heretics of Dune (1984) Chapterhouse: Dune (1985) Some serious good sci-fi in all of these. Frank Hebert's son has also written many additional books about the Dune universe.

In "Dune," Jessica is the real power. She was brilliant, forceful, powerful, strong, and a fighter better than all but maybe Gurney and Duncan but in the movies, they always make her appear weak. Without her, Paul would never have attained his station.

I think she always comes off as weak in the movies, due to her being captured so easily by the Harkonnens and her being out of her element in the deep desert without Paul. All things that also happen in the book. Paul thoroughly prepared for survival in the desert with his film books and was educated in how the Fremen equipment works by Dr. Kynes and Duncan, while Jessica was too busy overseeing the moving and managing the new household, as well as checking the palace for signs of traps that Thufir's men might have overseen. So it's no wonder she has to rely on Paul's knowledge for the time being. As soon as she has to actually do some fighting, like when she killed her captors and when she had to beat Stilgar, or when she has to use her skills of persuation (without using the voice) she was able to show her true power.
