Buntaro knew that Blackthorne risked his life to prevent Marikos capture and disgrace.

The correct answer. Getting captured is considered disgraceful with death being more honorable. Blackthorne saved the name and honor of his house.

I think the show portrayed all of this extremely well in a very short amount of screen time. The scene of him making formal tea for Mariko and finally offering her death and to die with her was an incredible climax of a supporting character’s arc. We finally got to see the private Buntaro too, a glimpse into his private psyche underneath his public gruff warrior’s exterior and every negative emotion being expressed as socially acceptable murderous rage.

Buntaro helped Blackthorne because he heard through the grapevine how Blackthorne saved the village.

To be fair, the show did kind of a bad job with Buntaro. He's so fascinating in the book. Buntaro is a peerless warrior of impeccable blood, a hero veteran of Korea, and a close servant of one of the preeminent warlords of the age. But he can't be master of his own house so long as his wife openly spites him. What's worse is that he legitimately DOES love Mariko and the thing she primarily resents him for (sending her away for years) he did to protect her from being used as a political pawn because of who her father is. She never loves him, and ends up being used as a political pawn by Toranaga. Buntaro is not a perfect man but he's everything a samurai is expected to be and is just a tragic character.

when blackthorne gave fuji his gun and she was totally lost on what to do with it so mariko told her to use it to protect him but when buntaro was beating mariko it was fuji outside their room with the gun... ready to protect her

I had assumed it was linked to Blackthorn’s willingness to second Mariko’s seppuku, (and to prevent her suffering and Christian eternal damnation for suicide)

It's crazy how misunderstood Buntaro's character is to this sub.

Kid was away from his parents for months. And judging by his comments, the regents council had been feeding him the notion he was abandoned by his parents and his liege on top of trying to marry him to a Kiyama's grand daughter.

Burying the hatchet. They both lost Mariko. They will never be friends or "bros", but there is no point being enemies anymore.

I think Buntaro may have had a role in the burning of Blackthorne's ship. I think he realized that Blackthorne was just a pawn in Torunaga's plans.

Buntaro had nothing to do with the ship. Toranaga burned it as proof to the christian daimyos he was sincere in his secret alliance with them. He eliminated what they feared.

@bujindork Concessions he makes are on his terms. Toranaga takes care of the ship because he wants to show he keeps his word. Really, he admitted to burning the ship to keep his court jester around, while acting as if he was destroying an Ace in the hole. Burning it earlier wouldn't have kept the card in play until he no longer needed it. Toranaga also kept his word to the priests, and gave them land in Edo to build a church. To his amusement, he allotted the land next to Gin's "to do with as she wishes." He knew exactly what she was going to do with it and that she would keep quiet about Toranaga so easily trapped and surrendering. Toranaga maintained that he didn't want power, he didn't want land, he didn't to challenge the Heir. The built up Edo, took lands, strengthened his position, while weakening others, but he really, really wanted to be Shōgun, which means one day he will probably have to challenge the Heir.

@Euripides_Panz most of his plans were more luck and he had to search for things his enemies wanted. His only real plan was crimson sky at first but as he got to know blackthorne, yabus secret deals and gossp from the madam he was able to deduce what he could offer everyone. Ochiba wanted her son alive, Zataki wanted Ochiba and the Kanto, Kiyama and Onoshi wanted either Blackthorne or the shipngone ro protect their profits plus he banked on his heritage and how he never lost a battle to sway them, plus Ishido wasnt looked at favorably being a peasant beauracrat who never lead an army he was easy to betray.

Buntaro forgave Anjin for sleeping with his wife and showed respect for his efforts to defend and save her in Osaka Castle. He was remarkable in how quickly he would admit his mistakes and then make amends for them. Like the scene after Anjin got him drunk on sake and then got made that he was drunk and beat Mariko.

This was the moment (#ShogunFX E3) I realized Hiroyuki Sanada is a top-tier actor because there's no way I should be feeling bad for Buntaro

Buntaro to me is a the Result of a Tool for War not used Properly so it goes insanse with all the unchecked emotions, fighting an inner war against himself and tradition but you can see that deep down he knows he is wrong but can´t help himselve. In war, you have to react, not think. Now, he has to be carefull/mindfull wich means nothing more then think before you act. Many people call this: A internal strugle of two realities colliding.

I think that has more to do with the manipulation of the other lords and the church. He’s an impressionable child away from anyone who actually gives a damn about him and is being used as a pawn. I’d hardly say that is dad rubbing off on him

If by "go out in the most honorable way in history" you mean his intended last stand in Osaka, it's a testament to how capable of a warrior he is that he managed to survive (i.e. "not take") it. I do agree that Episode 8 was a rather darkly amusing trauma congo line for him, though. Especially getting snarked/roasted by his wife *and* his father.

You should never judge a person for doing what was considered normal for the time period. Only condemn or praise them if their actions were especially bad or good for their time. Buntaro assaulting Mariko was completely unremarkable for the time. She had betrayed him. It was actually his right to kill her. So in a sense, he was being 'nice' by the standards of the day. It was only the circumstances (in a stranger's house, and as his lord's assistant) that were frowned on. Even Toranaga and Blackthorne only cared due to their own connections to her. Neither were outraged by the act in isolation. Outside of that, he's loyal, self-sacrificing, and even heroic. His main flaw is his pride, which prevents him from understanding Mariko, and leads him to self-pity. Everything else though was simply him being a product of the era he was brought up in.

In a fantasy Season 2, Fuji is sent far away to a nunnery. Blackthorne is held up at the village as he needs to build Toranaga that ship (or ships). Eventually Buntaro and Blackthorne join up to go on a trip to get Fuji back to Blackthorne. On the way, they experience many hardships, bad and good moments. Buntaro saves the life of Blackthorne at some point, and Blackthorne returns the favor by saving Buntaro's. We discover there is more to Buntaro that meets the eye. He and Buntaro form a friendship. Blackthorne gets Fuji back, and Fuji introduces Buntaro to a girl. Both couples end up finally happy. End of Season 2.

His character arc is great. He goes from unlikable, to hero, to unlikable again, and then almost sympathetic, sad, and then devastating. I look forward to his role in the finale. Buntaro. #ShogunFX #Shogun
