I believe Chani is the anchor of this story. All characters are being swept by their Ambitions... while Chani and her love of Paul and her people of Dune seems more selfless than the rest. Zendaya nails it to me. It's the last scene of the film for a reason and its importance will become clear. Imo

See, I agree with you all the way up until the last scene when she walks out on Paul. They had her written beautifully as a new age fredaykin who's almost annoyed with the "prophecies" she has heard her whole life from the elders. She even hates her name because it comes from a prophecy. And throughout the movie, you see her be happy for Paul in his accomplishments but you can see her wariness build more as the "prophecies" become more true. From riding the sandworm, to her tears having to wake Paul up. I think she should've stayed by Paul's side and helped lead the fremen. It would have kept it closer to the books, and I think rounded her character out better. And this isn't taking a dig at Zendaya. Her and Timothy as well as the others KILLED it in their performances. She acted what was written beautifully. I just think the writing for her character could've been better.

Her storming out just undermines allllll the hard work they put into making their romance believable. Although I think they were smart in making her a bit more critical instead of blindly loving the way she did in the book was smart, one thing the book did better was chaninwas smart enough to see past his political marriage and knew she was his true wife. Maybe they clean that up in part 3 to better match the book messiah but who knows.

I’m not seeing what John sees. She sounds just as North American as Chalamet. I got the impression she is a young woman who grew up with off worlders so she has a perfect pronunciation. So weird to see all this praise for Florence Pughs who is barely in the film but people are making weird criticisms of Zandaya. And I heard some say it’s strange she is the only non middle eastern looking person in among the Fremin. That was clearly not true and I personally think Zandaya could easily pass for North African.

Javier Bardem gave an Oscar winning performance… It was mesmerising!!

That War Council scene was the physical embodiment of how I feel every time I call my I.T. department and they tell me that something can't be fixed.

I've been spoiled with Oppenheimer and then Dune Part 2 in IMAX. Both will be top, unforgettable cinematic experiences for me. What a great time to be alive

I am 65 and have watched over a thousand movies during my lifetime. The movie genre I prefer is horror. Funny for an old lady. Dramas usually bore me. I watched Oppenheimer about two weeks ago and that movie was impressive. It lands in the top five of the best movies I have ever seen. I saw Dune 2 a few days ago. That movie landed in my top 20. My top five are Silence of the Lamb, The first Star Wars movie, Starship Troopers, Oppenheimer, and the first version of All My(or The)Kings Men. I hated the LOTR movies, mainly because I read the books over fifty times and I knew the story line too well. The Dune series, I only read once and that was over forty years ago. The director did a fantastic job in Oppenheimer. The black and white congressional hearings made it appear it was the actual hearing. That may be the best movie I have ever seen. You sound young. May you have many more great movie experiences. If you can remember a movie you have seen forty years from now, that was a great movie

Paul was never supposed to be the Kwisatz Haderach. Jessica went rogue and had a son with Leto, when she was supposed to have a daughter. That daughter was meant to give birth to the true Kwisatz Haderach. Paul was a generation early.

Paul "fulfilled" the prophecy due to the thousands of years of genetic manipulation. Sure he was early, but he still had all the genetic material of the would-have-been KH- Atreides and Harkonnen, and Lady Jessica was teaching him from a young age. Jessica going rogue and bearing a son, leading to her and Paul's assimilation into the Fremen and Chani bearing Paul's children, with her lifelong consumption of Spice, is what led to the most powerful KH- God Emperor Leto II

I got goosebumps when Paul walks into the sietche with the war drums banging.

Paul arriving at the war council is one of the most epic gigachad moments in film history.

Speaking of Alia scenes. When Jessica ingests the water of life. The effects showing Alia in the whome was mind bending. Her eyes widening as a fetus as she leveled up. gave me chills!!

One scene that stood out to me was Gurney showing Paul and everyone else the hidden armory for safekeeping. As Gurney explained the weapons and their potential impact, Paul gave a small smirk. The expression to me could’ve meant two things. Firstly, up until that moment, Paul had been training with the Fremen and fighting alongside them using whatever they had, I think he was glad to see something powerful from his homeland that his dad put there making him proud. Alternatively, the smirk might suggest Paul was drawn to the armory's power, potentially fueling a sense of hunger for power and embracing darkness. Notably, as the camera cuts to Chani, her expression reveals the opposite, indicating she sees a change in him. Or all of this is just in my head.

It was a cool scene. Not cool was rushing the ending and cutting a lot of gurneys character arch. He was supposed to try to kill Jessica, also it just comes across like a basic deus ex machina when he shows up with the nukes.

Yup. Same for me. I actually watched The King last yr which convinced me to watch Dune 1. I'm pissed I didn't see Dune 1 in theaters. I didn't make that mistake this time. Already seen it twice in IMAX and going to watch it again later this week 😊

I thought he was great in the King and he was okay in Dune 1 and he was really good in Dune 2. I’m not seeing what John is seeing in his Dune 2 performance. He is no where on the level of Javier Bardin or Skarsgard.

I absolutely loved the movie, but there was one part that left me scratching my head. It was the part where Paul is supposed to cross the desert overnight to prove that he's a Fremen. Chani ends up following him and they show a montage of them practicing the sand walk. All of the sudden it cuts to Harkannen dropping spice miners and DOZENS of Fremen are hiding under the sand, including Paul and Chani. It felt like they cut a scene out there and it was a bit confusing. Anyone else notice that?

​@@t-lew34920It felt to me like a conscious choice to skip past that. The test was not ultimately as relevant to Paul's story as being *sent* on the test in the first place. Having the opportunity meant a chance for acceptance, so the details of walking to a mound and back really didn't ultimately serve the narrative. What did, however, was the fact Chani showed her softening to him by joining him out there. If more of the trial was even filmed, I can completely understand why it would be cut, considering the runtime overall.

the ending when Jessica was talking to her unborn child about what's happening. and say's "the holy war has just begun" reminded me of the ending of attack of the clones. and it gave me chills

The director said we will see how they get off the warms in the next movie. He said it’s an important aspect.

SNL needs to do another skit featuring Paul's worm riding scene ending with him yelling "WAIT HOW DO I GET OFF" and the camera just cuts to Stilgar with an "oh-shit" look on his face

I actually love how Chani was written and portrayed. She’s more independent, free thinking, and she knows as well as Paul and Jessica do that the prophecy is a lie that can only lead to a holy war. Also while I wish that they stayed together at the end I really like that she leaves Paul and everyone else behind because A) Chani didn’t want to be Paul’s concubine while he married Irulan, even though they both know he will only ever truly love Chani, and B) she fought only to free her people from the emperor, not help a new one wage a jihad against the universe. She may know deep down that there was no other way, be she will not be part of this holy war.

I don't think the prophecy leads inevitably to war, more like the Harkonnens won't leave the Fremen alone and the opposition to the Bene Gesserit, who think he's too dangerous, Harkonnens and the Emperor leave Paul not much left than fight. He doesn't really want to be the Messiah like shown in the first part.

Maud'dib's mic drop speech. IT HAD A FREMEN NAME. Good god! One of the best scenes ever But lady Jessica was absolutely BRILLIANT. DARK AS HELL. but doing what she needs to do. Love it. Chani was good with facial expressions. Like i saw the heartbreak and the questions and the frustrations right on her face Stigler was so good. Obviously anton chigur is untouchable, but this was great.

I think that’s what makes good comic relief: when the comedy is just a natural part of the character. Like Stilgar, to me, definitely was comic relief but it was just authentically who he is which is what makes it work. Marvel should take notes

His character was butchered, he comes across as a shoe size IQ religious fanatic that wouldn't look out of place in The Life of Brian by Monty Python, none of the depth and intelligence, or scepticism he has until he finally accepts Paul, even then he is well aware of the danger that Paul poses to the Fremen as a messiah, if you've read the books you missed a hell of a lot, even in Dune Messiah and Children of Dune he is never comical in any way shape or form to the extent he's portrayed in part 2 and what little humour there is, it's the dark dangerous type of humour that's more likely to lead to violence then laughter.

They get off the worm, by slowing it down as much as possible using the process of lifting multiple segments of the worm's skin. The worm slows because sand is penetrating its skin. And, they just throw ropes off it and scale down. The last one off removes the maker hooks and scales off. In the book, when they take a trip to the southern hemisphere, they have to repeat this on something like 20 worms.

The Atreides arena fighter that wasn’t drugged who’s the IRL fight coordinator was in Dune Part 1 as Lt. Lanville on the Atreides Council. He’s sitting at the table when they have the council meeting in the 1st movie. Caught it after my 2nd or 3rd viewing. He had a goatee due to being in captivity. Love Denis’ attention to detail.

people who shit on timothee chalamet often haven't seen his movies and are just judging him based on how popular he is as a ~heart throb, thinking it's all there is to him. very leo coded tbh!

Lasers plus shields = atomics is something that never gets touched on in the film but is a big part of the source material - it's why they switched away from lasguns and towards swords when shields get introduced. The harvester obviously can't use shields because it will attract the worm, but thopters don't have the same restriction because they never touch the ground - so I think by not using the lasguns until after the thopter gets knocked out, they avoid triggering a nuclear blast and accidentally killing their messiah if they misfire or clip the thopter. Just my 2c

Agree. Having read the books there are a lot of small details like this that get glossed over in the movie in order to keep the movie flowing, because otherwise the film would just be explanation after explanation. I think in general the movies do a good job of explaining what really needs to be explained without bogging down newcomers to Dune and making it feel like they are watching a live-action encyclopedia. The books are so densely packed with details and world building to help you understand why things are the way they are but in movies you have so little time to explain every single minute detail of the world. I will say that the one big thing that I really wish they dedicated at least an extra 5 minutes to (in part one or part two) is to go in to more detail about WHY the spice is so important. The movies kind of just say “hey this is important and they need it for interstellar travel”, and obviously it affects Paul with visions. I am sure dune part 3 will explain more in depth because there are guild navigators in Messiah. But I do wish the first movie would have said how spice is used by the different groups in this universe and how it extends life and people become addicted, etc, etc. It would lend way more weight to why these different factions are so brutal about controlling Arrakis.

@t-lew34920 - Yeah, I kind of like how they don't go into many explanations about smaller stuff like that. They just trust that either the audience is smart enough to figure it out, or there are enough Dune book readers that they can explain to the people who don't know certain things.

I've only seen Dune 2 once and plan to see it multiple times. I really enjoyed it but hard to take it all in. The movie is really dense. The only issue I had with it has been echoed by a few people here. The final battle was "short" in the sense that my thought as I was watching it was "I saw all of the worm attack in the trailers". It was beautifully filmed and makes you just sit there in awe in your seat, but I was expecting a bit more. Maybe showing the Freemen dismount the worms, more hand to hand or maybe just showing the worms completely crushing thousands of the Sardaukar.

The reason he doesn’t talk it out with the Great Houses is the same reason Dr. Strange gives away the time stone. One way through

That is huge plot hole. In the book they accepted him because the Bene Gesserit and Spacing Guild made them accept. The Great Houses will do what the Spacing Guild tells them. The ending of the movie infers the Spacing Guild has sided with the Landsraad. Without out the Spacing Guild Paul and the Fremen cannot go anywhere.

@@andycalmes4201 I am talking about the movie. Did you not notice in the first film those huge cylinder shaped ships? Those are Spacing Guild Heighliners. It is the only way to travel intergalactic. The Guild has a complete monopoly. If you remember the Guild also transported the Harkonnen’s to launch a sneak attack against the Atreides. Without them there is no space travel. They would have been the ones who brought the Great Houses at the end.

The reason people think Tomothee Chalamet is overrated is because teenage girls like him. And in our society whenever teenage girls like something or someone people tend to have this kneejerk reaction of thinking it's unworthy.

Jessica taking the water of life opened her mind up to all of her ancestral memories and those of all the reverend mothers before her. That's why she became manipulative, cuz she had thousands of other personalities talking her through the bene gesserit master plan

I think Mads Mikkelsen would have been perfect as the emperor. He would be totally believable as the emperor of the entire universe. And he would have played the arrogance that led him to underestimate Paul perfectly! I kind of had to laugh a little bit when I saw Walken, because he is Christopher Walken.

I do appreciate Walken's casting though. It's kind of a callback to Jodorowsky's plans for Dune, which would have had Salvador Dali as the Emperor. His conversation with Paul was really well done, in my opinion.

The guy who Feyd fought who wasn't drugged was in part one quite alot. He says shields he tells Duke the doors must close cuz sun is coming down he always next to Leto aswell. He's in it more than that one scene U mentioned . Rewatch part one U will see him all throughout the first half of dune part one.

Idk why John thinks people will be mad at Dune: Messiah as the book tells it, because even in Part 1 it is already clear that Paul taking power will result in untold suffering, to the entire Imperium and also to himself. Dune; Messiah is really the logical conclusion to a rise to power narrative that ends with the hero upending the entire political system and concentrating power onto himself

Yes, Denis does do a good job of showing Paul as not a clearly morally clean character, but he is still the hero of the story and generally people rooted for him in Dune 1 and 2 (even if they felt some reservation). In Dune Messiah, Paul is completely deconstructed and made into not a hero at all - most people do not like that for the hero of their stories. It’s why Dune Messiah is possibly the most hated, or at least most polarizing sequel ever made to a beloved book. Additionally, Dune Messiah is usually seen a boring book with limited action; making it into a movie without massive changes to the story would require a serious tonal shift that unquestionably will upset a lot of fans who are not already fans of the sequel Dune books.

I sort of agree with John that Messiah is going to be tougher to adapt. The first book is a stronger story in my opinion with bigger tension and payoff and a more cohesive narrative. Messiah took me out of it a bit. And for general audiences who did not read the books who then watch Dune part 3 they might go “we went from this incredible story and pacing in part 2 to this?” And then we may never get children of dune or the rest. However, I think we are in good hands with Denis and if anyone can make this work I think he can. I will agree that changes will need to be made in order to keep a Messiah film flowing properly.

i heard paul say you die like an animal … reminded me of the scene of the bene gesserit saying an animal caught in a trap would gnawl off its own paw to escape.. the way baron called the great houses was him knawing his paw

I feel that Christopher Walken and Florence Pugh weren't given that much to do - maybe some scenes got cut that allowed them to do that, but their performances suffered a bit especially Christopher Walken's.

I saw someone refer to the Dune popcorn bucket as Shai Hal-ussy and I thought that was hysterical

I agree with John that Paul’s army at the end with its millions of Fremen fundamentalists had to simply shock and awe the Emperor’s forces. After all, eventually they will take on the Great Houses! The battle scene accomplished the message that Paul’s army could not be stopped at that point, and it did not have to be longer. When they take us inside and show the perspective from the besieged Emperor and company, it is amazing! I am also so glad that the bullies Baron and Rabban were quickly ended unceremoniously, deserving as complete pigs. And Feyd too was not built up as large a boss as some may want (but not me). I think this bully also just needed to be terminated with no glorification. It just took a bit longer, but Paul bested him-and we love it…

"Lead them to paradise." When Chalamet said that it sent a chill down my spine.!

That glimmer in Bardem’s eyes when he asks Muad’dib what does he see for them. It captures the look of a man that has waited his entire life for this exact moment. It’s pure movie magic.

As far as theater experiences go, this was so incredible and immersive. Breathtaking images and it felt like an earthquake in my chair during the action and sand worm scenes, I could feel it in my bones.

The scene of Lady Margaret seducing Feyd was so hypnotic, gave me Under The Skin vibes😂 would love to have seen more scenes on Geidi Prime

Beginnings Are Such Delicate Times…..Hans zimmer knock it out of the park with this track. One of my old time favorites.

I think the end could have been helped with an extra 10 minutes added on to it. There was the potential for more. Not that what they did was bad pacing, not that it needed more time, but just that there were opportunities to show more

Schindler's List also came out in 1994 and both Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes lost at the Oscars despite some of the best performances of their careers. 1994 was a HUGE year!

Regarding the messianic prophesies of the benefits gessuit being strangely accurate. "Many men tried the water of life and died" what did they see and say before dying? I think they saw pieces of the future and screamed them out while dying.

Getting a group of people with tents on a worms is the new "How do you use the 3 seashells?"

8:00 I liked Zendaya a lot. Some things Tim and Zendaya said to each other felt like 2024 and not 10,131.

How do they get off the worm. Explained in the books: when the worm is released it buries itself deep so they run all the way down the length of the worm and jump off its butt. They can also tire it out until it seriously slows down. To get on: once the worm is captured and starts running on top of the sand, the rider can slow it down for everyone else to climb up. The “luggage” is brought up on repulsers.

The whole "desert spring's water brings Lisan Al Gaib back" thing was made up for the movie. Chani's name in the books isn't Siyaha. That's a petname that's just a petname that Paul uses for her. They mention this as her name, and she says "it's part of the dumb prophecy" to further expand her role and her importance. But this actually makes it so that it makes even less sense for Chani to reject the prophecy. Because now, not only is Paul fulfilling EVERY part of the prophecy. But now we also have Chani who is herself part of the prophecy. A part that she fulfills.. she even intentionally mixes her tear with the water of life. But she still doesn't believe?

Paul is also the heir of House Harkonnen. Uncle Fayd

God I'm just so happy that a film like this exists and to have witnessed it in the theater with an audience. As a film fan, I’ve always waited for a film and theater experience like this, especially since I never got the chance to experience something like Lord of the Rings in theaters. This is the type of film that takes you out of your own reality, making you feel as if you are in the actual movie and feeling as if you are one of the characters, experiencing their emotions and point of views in the purest way as it can get. Cinephiles of this generation should really cherish this moment.

In the film spice was treated as a macguffin and the Spacing Guild is not even mentioned in Part 2 and a Guild Heighliner was not even shown. By the end of the movie we are given the impression the Spacing Guild has sided with the Royal Houses because the Landsraad will do as the Spacing Guild tells them. How can the Fremen even leave Dune without the support of the Spacing Guild?

In the beginning when harks start flying loved that

I watched part 2 in Imax with IDX. The seats had speakers in them. When a punch is landed, you could feel it. Worms rumblimg, you could feel. When the Freemen rejoice in Paul, it feels like you are a Fremen in the middle of it.

Top 3 scenes for me. When chani taught paul the sand walk, so beautiful. Feyd birthday and the war council scene. Also at first i thought the battle at the end was too easy until i take into account part 1 and how many L’s house atreides took.

To be fair, the books ending was fast AF and the battle happens swiftly. It was actually quite accurate to the source material in that regard.

What I will say is that if the last big fight scene was "bigger" it would eat out the budget to a point were other important scene would be lessen. In sci-fi it is better to keep the big epic scene at the minimum but flesh out story lore and character. (music costume set piece) subjective yes. But something to consider.

The reason why people fight with swords in dune is because the shields only allow slow moving objects through so guns would be imeffective. Its an awesome excuse to have large scale battles lord of the rings esque battle scenes if you ask me

For Zendaya critcism, i agree, she is still good in this movie but it feels like its director choice or bad take for her was chosen in editing. Id have to watch it again but lacks being lived in Arrakis. Its that thing where face and hair are too clean and well kept for being in the desert. A bit too care free attitude compared to the rest of the Fremen. I understand the Walken criticism too, it just didnt have the same gravitas as the other characters, when the emperor is scheming or worried about being found out, we didnt get those close up shots of the eyes or frown or anything to show the emotions like you see with other great actors. To be fair Ferguson, Chalamet , Butler, Skarsgard, Bardem, Brolin and so on were just bringing top of their game to this movie. lady jessica gave me chills , just great performances

It's funny that she called Paul 'Abomination' when that's actually what they call Alia in the books

She was referring to the fetus Jessica was bearing, not Paul. And in the later books, Alia was an abomination and was possessed by the Barons memories. Children born this way were put to death

I thought Zendaya was amazing.

Laser reflects from shield straight back to the gun that fired it. Then BiG Boom. It's in the books

I really love Christopher Walken’s Emperor. I am overjoyed that he got a chance to be in this greatest spectacle of recent times. His grand presence here reminds me of his work during the time he won an Oscar for “The Deer Hunter”. Before he became better known for his “Walken-isms”…

timothee chalamet is great in the french dispatch as well, he has a very strong screen presence despite his softspoken and subdued demeanor. also, i really liked christoopher walkens performance as the emperor, however i feel like his wardrobe and the set dressing for the locations he appeared at should have been more opulent. like he wears that same drab grey robe throughout the whole movie, when he should have been wearing something very ornate. also his throne was very tame as well, its called the golden lion throne, but it didnt look like it should be called that.

A handful of people i know who saw it said the same thing: epic movie but some things cut very quickly & left us confused on what just happened

Felt the same about part 1 as well a few key things felt missing

Thopter was shielded so couldnt use Laz guns on it without creating an atomic explosion.

I think the Fremen can make the worm stop if they want to get off. They could steer the worm with their hooks. Maybe they can make it stop by pulling both of them at the same time🤷‍♂️. And their were these holes under the worms scale. Maybe the do something with that 😂 idk. And in the scene in the end where the worm suddenly appeared out of the sand cloud, it was "standing still". So they don't move all the time. And If they know how to stop a worm, I think one of the Fremen just attracts the worm, rides it and makes it stop so the other Fremen can get on. That's my theory. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Walken as the emperor also talked like a mobster leader not an emperor.

Joh: Patrick Stuart played Gurney Halleck in the Lynch adaption. Also, Jessica is the daughter of the Reverend Mother and Baron Harkonnen for the breeding program. The Rev. Mother also afflicts the Baron with a degenerative disease that makes him into what we see (grossly swollen).

I'll tell you how Denis Villeneuve can resolve the dangling Chani issue from the end of Part 2 ..Dune Messiah starts a couple of months after Chani leaves Paul, who's now off to war with the Freman. Jessica is giving birth to baby Alia in a deep desert sietch and sends word for Chani to be by her side. Chani shows up, Jessica gives the Wives Speech, tells her about being a concubine to Leto and convinces her to give Paul a second chance. An unknowingly pregnant Chani then leaves to fight by Paul's side in battle, where she has a miscarriage, bringing her and Paul back together and solid, with promises of trying for more children in the future. Cut to 16 yrs later, (SPOILER ALERT!!) Paul and Chani are ruling over the empire, still trying to get pregnant, Alia is doing her Alia things, Irulan is spiking Chani's food, political intrigue is turned up to 11, Duncan (Hayt) arrives, the stoneburner, wild stuff, followed by the heartbreaking ending, with the Twins being born and the aftermath of their birth. Ending with Paul walking blind into the desert. If the audience doesn't leave the theater both exhilarated and heartbroken, the entire series will be a failure, no matter how great it looks onscreen. At its heart, Dune is a tragic love story. And, the Twins MUST be in the end of the movie. It's Paul's fear of the Golden Path that wins in the end, forcing his fate upon Leto II, who goes on to become the God Emperor. I hope Denis Villeneuve reconsiders and eventually makes Children of Dune. After all, Paul's story doesn't really end until the Preacher is murdered. Besides, I would love to see Anya Taylor-Joy play a mad-as-a-hatter Alia, possessed by granddad. It would be wild! Anyway, that's how the film can be adapted and still be true to the story.

Chani loves Paul. "She will come around" and Jessica saying "History will call us wives" is easy enough to pull off. I dont think Messiah would be as different as people seem to think itd be

I had something very similar in mind. in fact chani is shown wearing a scarf, which for fremen it means she is married and with a child already. So that must be a nudge

I seen it twice, and I can’t wait to watch it with the captions.

The worm riding was funny cause when I watched it with my dad and brother my dad leans over to me, and says “how the hell do they get off the worm” 😂😂😂😂

Dune Part I felt like it was missing something and was not complete. Dune Part 2 felt complete and satisfactory.

You are correct. Clearly if you or I arr looking for anything beyond a surface level understanding of Dune this review isn’t it. 2:10:03 Such a bad take as well. Erin Yager is similar to Paul, because he started off as the hero but with power became the villain. John seems to think Paul is a heroic figure and I don’t understand how any serious critic could miss the obvious colonial criticisms.

Speaking of Dune 2 possibly winning a Best Picture Oscar...does it hurt its chances of winning by coming out so early in the year?

Would've been great for the author to have been alive to see this film. But I guess, as with Lord of the Rings, it takes big leaps in cinema technology and one of a kind film makers, to get these epics made.

I hated the LOTR movies. Mainly because I have read the books over fifty times. Sometimes having that much knowledge of a book just ruins the movie. I wish a director would make a movie based on Terry Brooks Shannara series

Just started reading your comments on youtube. I know this was about Paul's transition, but for me, it was about Jessica. After she drank the water of life, she was oh my God. The conversation she had with Paul and Aliyah when Jessica's was heading south and she told Paul we'll be waiting all of us, all the reverend mothers.

Beside Paul saying Chani will come back he also has the vision in the first movie where she is standing next to him on Caladan.

If they make a relatively faithful adaptation of Messiah, this fan would be very happy. Messiah is my second favorite Dune book

I would have cast Willem Defoe as the emperor. Or maybe Damien Lewis as a slightly younger wildcard choice.

the first line of the movie is spice is power. the entire ,movie theyre enterupting the houses flow of spice production and litterally living on it and eating it in theyre food, of course theyre going to be a force at the end. not even speaking its their home turf, another advantage, it all adds up how they staem rolled the emperor at the end

In making an adaptation, you get the benefit of the source material. You don’t start from a blank slate. You can build off the original. Villenueve did this phenomenally well. It is Godfather-level. He took the original and made it better.

Saw Dune 2 in the latest IMAX in New England. A guy 2 rows ahead of me was watching Dune 1 on his phone, finishing the movie seconds before ours started, pretty smart for a awesome double feature

Don’t make me cry

Here in Australia a 4k blu-ray 2-pack of both films is up for preorder. I was holding out on buying the first film in hopes of a bundle so this is great news to me.

Michael Caine or Gary Oldman would have been a better emperor.

When it comes to adaptions, I think what makes good ones stand the test of time is correctly identifying who is the heart and soul of the book. Peter Jackson and his team clearly, and correctly, identified that Frodo is the anchor. For Dune, and Dune Pt. 2, Villeneuve is taking us through Paul's journey as a character and he never sacrifices that for anything else. EVERYTHING is in service to telling Paul's story well.

Yes, Laser onto a shield equal atomic boom because both manipulate atomic frequencies. Think crossing the streams in ghost busters. That's the premise in the books for why "Laze Weapons" are sparing used and they fight a lot with knives and projectiles even though they have the lasers. Frank Herbert has Denis covered on that one.

Saw Dune 2 Yesterday - Amazing - sat in row 7 or 9 (recliner seating at Landmark cinemas in Canada) I think that when I go see it again I might actually Choose to sit front or Second row -- to get Totally immersed in the show!
