More like pure Holly wood cash grab. The producers didn't have the guts to be faithful to the book. The book is way gnarlier, they were afraid people wouldn't be able to handle it so they eliminated the more shocking elements. It was seriously watered down and made into a typical Marvel superhero movie. Ugh

  • @adambazso9207

@@pardeeplace4480Of course, nobody could be completely faithful to the books. As a big Hollywood-production it was better than the first part and better than a lot of recent sci-fi-fantasy-films. That's of course due to the quality of the source-material, but besides some shortcomings (for example some anti-climactic fight-scenes at the end) it was very engaging, thrilling and didn't feel like 2 hours 40 minutes.

14:33 I'm one of those book purists, so it's crazy to say this, but I think NOT ONLY did Denis only make good changes, I think those changes actually make the story as a whole better. For example, Chani being a counter-force to Paul just serves to drive home his differences after he drinks the water of life (he's totally on her side before, afterwards... he realizes he doesn't have a choice but to betray her and the fremen) she protests so much so it's really clear to everyone that this isn't a savior story, it's a story about a people being used by leaders, power, and religion. Denis really captured what Frank wanted to say.

Book purist here too. I agree with your assessment. There were always going to be changes from book to screen no matter what is being adapted. People are always surprised by this for some reason. The question is, do the changes work for what is presented without completely betraying the source material. With that said, Denis made changes that were pretty amazing overall and leaves even a Dune book nerd like myself wondering what’s next.

This comment section is insane, with all the "Nah, it was meh." or "Denis failed Dune fans" comments. Like... I've no idea what to tell you. Personally, I am not a "fan" of the books... I am a book-Dune fanatic, to the point of having read EVERY translation to my mothertongue, along with the original multiple times. This book led me to choose my first university path (sociology of religion). When I had panic attacks as a teenager, I used to recite the litany against fear. From the bottom of my heart, this movie is almost perfect. Did it cut out plot threads I love? Sure. Quite a lot, actually. There is no other way to adapt a book of this density without making a full-blown series with an astronomical budget. So the creators made trade-offs: we do not see Thufir plotting as prisoner of the Harkonnen, but we DO spend time (unlike in the books) living wih the Fremen, with their tensts, banter, coffee sets and all. We see them actually fight against technologically-superior troops. Did it change the role of Chani? Yes, a lot. And with good reasons to do so. Did Stilgar crack jokes in the books? No. But we've heard Paul lament losing a friend as he became a worshipper. Here, on screen, we could SEE this friendship. And my god did Javier Bardem deliver the perfect balance of human-heartedness and fanaticism! It was not Denis Villeneuve's job to translate the books exactly 1:1, ever scene, every dialogue. To think otherwise is brain-dead. Instead, what we got was the true story and magic of my most beloved book translated into the language of a movie. And I could not be more happy about it. I'm gonna see it a couple of times more while it runs on the big screen.

I think the only other 2 people that can join that list are Jenna Ortega(who’s already on it) and Glen Powell(who I need to see a little more of Twisters may seal it for me). Maybe Tom Holland if he picks better projects and shows off his chops. But these current 5 are the future of young stars in Hollywood for the foreseeable future

For example: the scene from his vision, from part one, where he slices up the imperial soldiers strikes a pose and his helmet comes off, It's Chani who does that in part two. Or the scene where he gives her a long gaze. I think they tried to make that shot mirror his first vision of Arakis (Chani looking at him).

I’m so sad that I’m hearing people say Denis Villneuves “might be the best sci-fi director ever” when he is the best director working right now. Period. No genre. People are forgetting Sicario, Enemy, Prisoner and Incendies. He hasn’t missed once.

Ray Ora's point is so good. Such a powerful part that easily signifies the magnitude and importance of what is happening and the themes it is exploring. Its slightly uncanny, but believable and intense. The movie makes you feel what it wants you to feel.

What I loved about this is that action does not take precedence over the narrative. Any other action film would have the last 45 minutes being just action, here though you get about 10 minutes of action ie battle scenes, then back to plot at a human scale with the throne room scene. Brilliant.

It's an absolute shame and tragedy that Disney did not treat Star Wars like this. Star Wars ep.7, 8, and 9 where dumpster fires compared to the production of Dune, and I am a hardcore Star Wars fans.

The SW prequels were a dumpster fire compared to this… I don’t blame Disney at all for not comparing to this film. Film making is hard. SW forever became simplistic childish space opera the moment child Annakin jumped in the podracer… it was all downhill from there… with Rogue One and Andor being a rare high point.

I wasnt a fan of this franchise. I watched part 1 on netflix and i find it cool and made me wanna see part 2. Then i watched part 2 in cinema yesterday. Here's what i can say. If you are hooked from the start and felt that u dont want the movie to end, then there's no doubt that the movie and the franchise just turned you into a fan! I cant wait for part 3. And yes, it is one of the best or perhaps the best sci fi movie i have ever seen. I wish today's star wars has this kind of writing and story telling.
