On "My Car Story" we're in Volo IL on 2-7-17.
We're looking at a Duesenberg II Torpedo Sedan “Twenty Grand”. Today I'm speaking with Brian Grams, Director of the Volo Auto Museum, and he shares the name “Twenty Grand” came from the car’s price back in the 1930’s when the car sold for $20,000.00 dollars.
The “Duesenberg II” was produced between 1978 and 2000 by the Elite Heritage Motors Corp and successor company Duesenberg Motors Inc. in Elroy Wisconsin. Each one was copied from an original and visually almost identical past car, with Ford Lincoln drive train, and a Ford V8 engine and modern comfort features. Fewer than 100 “Duesenberg II’s” were made in total.
The car's located at Volo Auto Museum, 27582 Volo Village Rd., Volo IL 60073.
Web site is www.VoloCars.com

Been there, and the Duesenberg room is impressive, though you do have to remember that you're not standing next to tens of millions of dollars - these are replicars built on FoMoCo running gear. "Built by Dusenburg" only means someone bought the corporate name. The real 20 Grand is in the Nethercutt (highly recommended) north of LA. Volo itself is an interesting slice of American along with autos and worth a drive - close enough that if you're visiting Chicago you could do it with a there and back one day rental. The Klairmont Kollection, actually in the city of Chicago, also has 3 or 4 of these.

I love how if something is beautiful when it's created, it might go out of style, but it'll always be beautiful thereafter. This car is still gorgeous eighty some-odd years later. Today's cars look like toasters, by comparison. Thanks for the post; you can sure find 'em.

decided to research the volos and found out their museum, located in their villiage, on their street, has some cool famous cars. the 1989 batmobile, carroll shelby's series 1, the general lee, the mad max interceptor, and plenty more. advertised 400 vehicles on site. pretty amazing!

Hi, Yes, a very fun place for all ages. Hope you can visit, Lou
When I was just a kid we had neighbors who had not only antique cars but rare fine ones. One was indeed a 1930s Duesenberg dual cowl Phaeton 16 cylinders two tone green. Another was a 1925 Pierce Arrow roadster soft yellow with red leather and even the rumble seat was leather. Only not tufted due to possible rain. It had a compartment for golf clubs. They also had a 1906 Maxwell with stick steering and a 1914 Buick Phaeton. They had others like a model A phaeton but those others were magnificent. Imagine being 12 and riding in rumble seats during parades!!! I got to ride in those cars. I knew they were special but had no clue as to their value. She was a nice widow lady and she worked on those cars! She and her husband had restored them all.

To be accurate, the Duesenberg Model J cars had a straight eight engine designed by Fred Duesenberg, but it was made for them by Lycoming - another company within the Cord empire

Lou thank you for all the cool videos. I get bored here at home alone and need something to do so I watch videos. LOTS of yours in fact. Yes she was a great lady. Really great lady. She didn't have to tolerate me being at her place all the time but she did. And I helped her wash the cars which you know has to be done in a certain way. Her husband was maybe 45 when he died, sadly. But she stayed active in her car clubs and was an amazing mechanic!!

I believe cars are meant to drive, so I would want a little more reliable power for this behemoth. If u got the old motor in a crate nearby good, but it is just too much trouble to keep the old motors going, so the whole car sits instead.. so add a smallblk V8 and drive the damn thing, enjoy it!

+GRANT HART - I think that's a bit harsh. The Heritage motors were exacting copies of the original. Each body style was precisely measured and hand built. They've got a very good reputation in the classic car scene and generally retail at between $200k-$300k. Yes, they're not the originals but then again, maybe it's good they're not $4m each. People will actually drive them instead of sticking them in a warehouse somewhere.

Yes...the One and Only “20 Grand” is in the Nethercutt Collection...I have seen it personally several times. It is worth seeing, I was shown at the Worlds Fair in 1933, years later, I believe in the 50s it became available and through a few collectors JB Nethercutt got ahold of it and it has been in his collection in Sylmar California every since. If you get to LA go visit AND You Can see It and Many Other Duesys and Other rare Cars for FREE, just reserve a spot in the Free Tour.

A Duesenberg with a Chevy motor. The story of these is interesting.
@loucostabile
3 жыл бұрын
Happy to read you found this story interesting.
The reason why the chauffeur's compartment is cramped is because back in the '30s they didn't want to let the chauffeur get too comfortable. It wasn't because people were all that much smaller back then. It's that servants didn't deserve to have anything as luxurious as legroom when they were on the job. Legroom was reserved for the owner who rode in the back.

Neat idea, cool custom build. But another failed attempt to revive a marque. You can't innovate by making copies, and Duesenberg bros were innovators. To do it right would be something along the rebirth of modern Bugatti, or Maybach. Build an all-out supercar with some tangible tei-in to the original (Bugatti in Molsheim, Maybach was part of Daimler)
