I found out this automobile was in Phoenix and had to see it. What an incredible piece of automobile history! I've seen many Duesenburgs; each one a piece of art. Although I didn't get to meet Mr. Martin, his staff was extremely knowledge and accommodating. A beautiful collection; there's something there for everyone. For me, besides the Dousey, I fell in love with the Chevy Speedster that he drove in the Great American Race. Easy to get to, right off I-17 heading North out of Phoenix.

Just amazing to see that early version of “anti-lock” brakes. It’s a switch to choose either maximum or minimum brake pressure and in the minimum setting it specifies snow then ice as you reduce the pressure. Just consider the specific engineering detail considered like this back in 1930. It’s just amazing. I want this car, lol. It’s absolutely everything I have ever dreamed of as a luxury vintage automobile. When I sell my patent, I’ll be making a trip out to make an offer if it’s still around, lol!! 👍🏻😎👍🏻

@@loucostabile, will do my friend. No doubt there will be a Duesey J or an Auburn Boat Tail in my garage in the near future. That Duesey Boat Tail is just an absolutely fabulous car and has literally all the design elements of every vintage car I have ever wanted to own all in one car. It’s completely mind blowing that one car has ALL of that and in such spectacular condition. I was fortunate enough to have been able to take a 1930 Duesenberg Beverly Extended Sedan (limo) for a nice long day cruise with its elderly owner. About 275 of the greatest miles I think I have ever driven in any automobile and I simply HAVE to own one of them the moment I have the means to do so. That car was an absolute dream to drive for hours on end and never once did it give any indication that it couldn’t keep rolling rock solid reliable for another 1000 miles without breaking a sweat. I was completely stunned by how beautifully that monster gobbled up asphalt while we were perfectly comfortably the entire ride. When the comment was made during the drive that these vehicles were designed to smooth out the sort of roads they had back then, it made complete sense that the road conditions that exist today make the ride in a Duesey feel like your floating at times (relatively speaking, lol). But the really impressive part was that at NO time did any mechanical aspect of that car feel like it was going to possibly be unreliable. Not at all. Just an amazing work of art and an example of how far engineers were able to push the limits back in those days. Very much the same sort of precision thinking that Singer put into the design of sewing machines from the period. Nothing stopped them from forming the creations they had in their heads to perfection and accomplish producing some amazing products that in many cases can literally out perform a number of parallel products made today. I personally do quite a bit of sewing and I will take a 1930’s Singer 201-2 over just about ANY plastic domestic machine made today no matter how many fancy stitches it can produce. If there was enough thread on a spool, I could put the control pedal almost on full speed and let that machine stitch an entire mile of stitches and it would lay down the most perfect stitch row one has ever seen without one skipped stitch. AND, lol, you could reload it with thread and perform that same task over and over again without fail. As long as the lubrication and non metal wear components are attended to properly, these machines from that era will literally operate damn near forever!! So damn cool!! Simply gotta have one, lol!! 👍🏻😎👍🏻

Fantastic automobile! Electric windshield wipers and hydraulic brakes. Most of the "common" American cars didn't have electric windshield wipers until the late 1950's - early 1960's. Just proves - if you have money you can get just about anything. I do suspect, however, that the leather upholstery in this car is not original. Could be wrong. Btw- the ACD (Auburn-Cord-Deuesenberg) Automobile Museum in Auburn, Indiana has a beautiful black boattail Duesenberg in their showroom.

+Roger Beltz - The major innovation was the engine. It had Dual Overhead Cams and 4 valves per cylinder. This was highly unusual for the time. The performance of these things in a straight line was just extraordinary. The standard J could get from 0-60 mph in below 10 seconds and had a 119 mph top speed. That's 35 mph faster than a Rolls Royce Phantom II. The SJ (supercharged) was capable of 0-60 mph in 8 seconds, 0-100 mph in 17 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph. The SSJ with 400 bhp that Gary Cooper had was reputedly capable of 160 mph and 0-100 in 15 seconds. Imagine driving in one of them back in the mid 1930's. Not even a Bugatti, Talbot Lago, or Rolls could compete.

Really? I'm old and remember much earlier electric wipers. I recall a '52 that had them and '48. Not sure that the '48 wasn't vacuum. The '55 Buick was vacuum and not good. Our '53 Packard Caribbean had them but may have been hydraulic or vacuum. Intermittent wipers were later. Lots of people reading this will know the details and probably inform us all accurately.

nice video. really enjoyed it. I've been lucky to see a pair of Duesebergs that a couple would show at the AACA Westbury Gardens on Long Island, NY. They are very sleek cars that were built lower to the ground than the cars of their day. They could cruise at 150mph with no problem. As a comical story to these cars, I remember one year the couple had brought the cars to the meet and were sitting in lawn chairs keeping an eye on their cars. Another couple came over to admire the Duesenbergs and the guys was asking the owner a lot of question and was very interested in them. The owner's wife began a conversation with the man's wife. She all of a sudden whispered to the other woman that the cars drove like a bus. I thought that quite funny .Yeah! a two million dollar bus! I realize that the duesenberg drove heavy but engineering marvels and beautiful cars

nah, top speed of any supercharged Duesenberg SJ might have been 135mph but that would have to have been on the Utah Salt Flats - well, almost - as it took a while to reach that speed - AND you would never do it on public roads because the brakes were inadequate to slow quickly a car of this mass. Nonetheless, a truly great, great automobile of the era

A frame would be just that, frame rails and cross members only. A hell of a big difference. You're supposed to be a "car guy" and you don't know the difference between a chassis and a frame?

@@loucostabile Yes, I was thinking the same thing - dual carbs and rams-horn intake manifolds tell me this is a rare 400hp engine. Two short wheelbase SSJ's had this engine & were originally purchased by Clark Gable and Gary Cooper. I wonder how many of these engines were produced, as most model J Duesenbergs weren't supercharged.
