Can't thank you enough for bringing this battle to life. I'll wait for the full video to spread it a bit though. If you don't mind the humble suggestion, I would use the opportunity of releasing a battle of Cochin "full video" to stress a bit more the difference in numbers (for instance, it is known that the Zamorin had more than 100 ships destroyed and over 19.000 casualties from his side, while the Portuguese didn't have any casualties on their side with their 150 men and 3 ships). That would be something to.highlight in a post-battle summary, that you don't do in this video, which would remind the viewer of how much of a underdog Duarte was on this fight. Having said that, wonderful job, keep up the good work. I'll wait eagerly for Almeida and, of course, the great Albuquerque's videos. If you need anything (or ever want to come to Portugal) just say so;)

Notwithstanding, one has to say that this is a really tricky battle to cover, because it spans several months, back and forwards in formations and skirmishes. You did a great job putting it all together. Props to you sir. Thank you very very much for bringing this epic tale to life!

I have a Portuguese surname and I always wondered about our history with Portugal, my father always told me that when Angola was a part of Portugal, life was much better than it is here now. I wanted to know more about Portugal and this channel taught me so much about the Portuguese Empire. Its weird because I feel very proud of the history as if it is my own. I hope others feel this way too. Thank you for this channel for sharing this in so much detail. I hope my Portuguese brothers will also feel proud. Yes it was a rough history with some questionable actions, but overall one cannot deny how fascinating it was for brave men to travel so far into far off lands in search of adventure and fortune. It is said that these Portuguese expeditions were the beginning of globalization. The world metaphorically became a smaller place. People would start new blood lines and new histories and countries were created. I don’t think all would share your pride in a history that was imposed on you - but from what I have gotten from the Brazilians in the audience - they too are very proud of their heritage and their Portuguese forefathers

But now that we are free, and we got better at electing leaders, I daresay we are much vetter off than the Spanish. Another amazing story about this Portuguese hero who with his intelligence and courage managed the impossible to defeat a huge army with a few men... it's a shame, however, that instead of being a national hero for Portugal, he had an unfulfilling end and he died alone and forgotten as the same has happened here in Greece where the heroes of the revolutions of 1821 against the Turks fought for the homeland but only got contempt from the Greek state and many died forgotten and poor!!!!!! hello from Greece and I am waiting for the continuation of the Portuguese story.

Those men were extremely brave and enterprising. I am enthralled by these videos, that is to say, I’m more than a fan! I wish epic movies would be made to teach this to our youth. Imagine sailing there, thirsty, hungry, constant headache from dehydration, scurvied, and then arriving and fighting for your life.

This was a bit emotional. Always felt that Duarte Pacheco Pereira was deeply, unjustly mistreated by the court and by history. This was a man of the highest caliber. The type of friend that you would take to a mortal place or to a suicidal war, and also the type of person that you'd gladly spend time with absorbing his vast knowledge and vision over a glass of Portuguese red wine. Thank you for making him justice. And thank you to promote this extraordinary warrior and Renaissance man to a vast audience. Again: thank you. What a trinity: Pereira, Almeida and Albuquerque. Regardless of the epoch, circumstances or geography, they would be military geniuses of the first order, the cream of the cream. Intelligent, resourceful, dynamic, analytical, great leaders, incorruptible, visionaries, cultured and ruthless. If you know their story, and you compare them to other revered military figureheads from other countries, you cannot deny such assumption. The intro with Camões' words was also a touch of class. Portugal has been fighting for more than two thousand years with excepcional success the most powerful armies in the world. Since Viriathus, the Lusithans and the Celts Bragaerae who defeated the Romans for more than 200 years, when France was all conquered in just 10 years. Even the great ancient writer Strabo wrote: - "And yet the country north of the Tagus, Lusitania, is the greatest of the Iberian nations, and is the nation against which the Romans waged war for the longest times". Portugal fought all kind of invaders and expelled the most powerful army in the world of that time, the Arabs, much before the Spanish and beated them in astonishing battles of few Portuguese against much superior armies. Even before the region became called Portugal, the people and the region already had the same soul. When the Otomans already were in the doors of Viena and entering in Hungary, the Portuguese defeated them in the Indic ocean. Without that, maybe the Europeans could be speaking Turk nowadays. Portugal defeated pirates, Berberes, Indians, Chinese pirates, Mamelucs and many other forces, fighting alone, when Europeans even thought the world was just what their eyes could see. Portugal defeated the Dutch and the French in many wars for Brazil, even fought and defeated the Germans alone in wars for Africa, destroying the German imperial dream of Deutsch Mittelafrika. Even the British were defeated when they tried to make Portugal a protectorate, during a short period of the Spanish Habsburg regency. Castile was defeated in too many battles and Napoleon was defeated in his 3 attempts to conquer Portugal. The Spanish famous prime minister Manuel de Godoy wrote in his memories: - French Spanish invasion of Portugal (1762): - All Portuguese, in accordance with the fundamental laws of the country, were soldiers and defenders of the kingdom until they were 60 years old... thrown into hardships, on heights, in ravines... they fought a guerrilla war, causing many more losses to the enemy than regular (Anglo-Portuguese) troops. The war of positions, marches and counter-marches, imposed by the Count of Lipa, in which we suffered countless losses, was supported mainly by the armed peasantry. Portugal had the longest global empire in human history and yet, some call this old nation weak and irrelevant. However, there was a man that had such an extraordinary respect for the Portuguese, that he demanded his king to praise the Portuguese, his name was Wellington and he was an excellent judge of value!

​@@FlashPointHx There are several academic explanations, the most obvious was that as since the Neanderthal, the peoples moved to west following the sun and obviously the climate and natural resources, so the most capable ended in west Iberia. That means that the locals were always fighting the new comers and when the new comers were too strong, they too became part of the region.

Once again, we are enthralled by the tale of this Portuguese warrior who, despite facing an overwhelming enemy force, triumphed with a small band of brave men. It's unfortunate that his life didn't turn out the way he had hoped. Like in Greece, where the revolutionaries who fought against the Turks in 1821 were met with contempt by the state and left destitute and forgotten, he should have been a national hero for Portugal. Greets from Greece! I can't wait for the Portuguese story to continue.

The Age of Discovery is one of my biggest blindspots in terms of World History, thank you for this.

Even during the 20th century, when at the Colonial Wars (1961-1974), 30 people were trapped for 13 hours inside a chapel within Mucaba, Africa, against 2000 angry soldiers until the air force came to the rescue.

@@FlashPointHx With a lot of crazy melee in it, as it was expected by the berserk Fidalgos; having read Roger Crowley, I'm sure you know what I mean with that reference. 😄. I'd also recommend to everyone the 8 volume books entitled 'Portuguese Sea Battles', by Armando Saturnino Monteiro, the first three are arguably the most interesting ones. You'll find around 450 battles, each divided in one chapter, with a few sieges included. Have fun!

No KZread, é ainda pior ver como não há bons vídeos com animações pra nos ajudar a entender determinadas descrições apenas apresentadas em leituras, muitas vezes com termos sem explicações que façam o estudante moderno compreender o que é contado. Esse canal e essa série está prestando um serviço gigantesco à História, sem exagero! [It's incredible to realize that this story is so little told and celebrated in Portuguese (at least in Brazil, I suppose even in Portugal). The English Wikipedia has much more extensive content about the "Armadas of India" than the Portuguese Wikipedia itself. It feels like a videogame, or something out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where both sides are constantly running back and forth, one trying to get across, and the other throwing whatever they can get their hands on at them to keep them from crossing.

Great video, but you were incredibly generous for the indian auxiliaries of the portuguese. They melted at the slight taste of combat. Duarte Pacheco Pereira spent more time trying to raly them than leading them. On one occasion, a group of Calcute men tried to flank the island through the fields, but a group of "untouchables" farmers reppeled them.** Pacheco Pereira begged the Raja to give weapons to them instead of the useless troops the Raja had given him, but the Raja "educated Duarte on the intricacies of the cast system". ( **Calculte warriors were more afraid of being "corrupted" by the untouchables than their farming equipment weapons) You also left out the scene that Duarte refused any reward from the Raja for defending Cochin, refusing the barrel of black pepper.

You really know this battle well - that part with the untouchables was one of the items that didn't make it into the video. There was also a part where he switched fire signals and made the Samudri's men fight each other in a night battle. Happy that you have followed this series for so long!

@@FlashPointHx The Portuguese have Celtic roots, so it's no surprise. There are no known contemporary portraits of him, but we do have physical descriptions such as that one, which makes up for the lack of an image. The chronicles written by the contemporaries João de Barros, Diogo do Couto, Corrêa, in works such as 'Décadas da Ásia' & 'Lendas da Índia' are very, very graphic with the events, the appearance of the individuals involved and the weapons they used: a lot of references to long knotted beards, to the «Montantes» (the greatswords, called 'Spadone' by the Italians & 'Zweihänder' by the Germans), and to armors of course; the ones we do see on the animations are more akin to the 2nd half of the 16th century. During the earlier decades, full head to toe plates were still common. Roger Crowley himself made use of those authors by the way.

@@FlashPointHx I presume alot of this sentiments comes from the fact that while Portuguese did bad stuff in the colonies they where actually quite safe and good economically, completely different of today, and because the time where portuguese had colonies was not that far, ( the colonial wars happened after WW2 so alot of people remember those times), another thing is that during the dictator regime the colonies where actually quite well kept, there where even talks of creating a commonwealth like the British, integrating those colonies on it.

@@SylvaHodracyrda what I gathered from him, I think, in his mind, his country would be better today, one example he gave me, was, the population of all ex-portuguese colonies can be portuguese if a person papers are correct and after pass through the bureocracy, and can live in Portugal, even become portuguese, then european, while other countrys wouldnt accept that, he can only have a visa for 1yr in England, thats it, but a brasilian, an angolan, a capeverdian or moçambique guy can become portuguese after his papers are accepted
