England was recovering from wars in France and the wars of the roses. The first involvement of the British with India was corsair activity during Portugal-Spain union from 1580 to 1648. Then came the first British colony in India, Bombay, which was a gift (in the form of a dowry for the marriage of princess Catarina with Charles II in 1661).

Extraordinary. Thank you. Despite creating a magnificent, enlightened civilization in southern Iberia, when Muslim armies invaded Western Europe in 711 (then, the Visigothic realm) little did they know that they were opening up a Pandora Box. In time, the Iberians first, and then other Europeans, would expel them from Europe and start to chase them around the globe. Unfortunately, the consequences of this clash of cultures are still being felt today. The Portuguese were hell bent on waging a crusade whenever and wherever they encountered Muslims, even when terribly outnumbered. Cabral, with all his flaws, was such a crusader. Regrettably, innocent Hindus were caught in the barbaric crossfire between Christians and Muslims. On a side note: Bartholomew Dias was, most probably, the most extraordinary and accomplished navigator and captain of his day. He did not get there by being from the high nobility (he was not). Competence and merit alone explain his feats. And it is quite fitting that he lost his worthy life having one more go at the iconic, menacing cape that he discovered for Europe and that truly embodies the clash between Indian and Atlantic civilizations.

You have a good point - Christianity was reeling from the fall of Constantinople in 1453. When Ferdinand and Isabella completed the reconquista in 1492, the spirit of crusading was invigorated. Granted the Portuguese were crusading in N Africa even before then, but after that , they were on the war path.

Watching so many different history channels not only gives you different perspectives on these events, but it also fills in an intricate timeline that, for so long, had been filled with large gaps. When watching videos like this I can't help but think about how other events that are happening concurrently, like the rise of the Ottomans, the dissolution of the Timurids, the stagnation of the Golden Horde, the consolidation of the Great Ming etc. It's all so fascinating and almost overwhelming, yet fills me with such wonder and amazement!

Yeah I know almost nothing about Portuguese history or the age of exploration and it is a wild story so far. It's like 50% survival rate. That is an insane number to have so many volunteers repeat the journey. But the idea of meeting people you know nothing about. Landing in Brazil must have been one of the most interesting places to be in all of human history. And I'd love to see more about the Indian ocean. To be so unimpressed by someone who just sailed around Africa is so funny. To arrive in a foreign city demanding to murder people for their religion has to seem like one of the more insane things, but I'm sure shit like that happened many times in the history of humanity.

Pêro Vaz de Caminha was the writer of a beautiful letter sent to king Manuel describing the first contact of Europeans and natives of Vera Cruz. It can be found on the Internet. This writer was one of the men who died on the attack to the PT post in Calicut.

Great stuff! Incredible how for quite a while Brasil was put on the back burner, as all the focus was on India, the spice trade and thwart Muslim presence over there. Can't wait for the nest episodes!

As a brazillian, we received just a glance of the history, in school. As an adult, I've learned about a portuguese that already "discovered" Brazil years sooner than Cabral, but this portuguese was on a mission focused on the Treaty of Tordesilhas, so he kept sailing to the caribbean sea, instead of going south (as Cabral did). This video showed me the sequence after Cabral "discovered us" here in Brazil. Thank you for this and the other videos of the portuguese explorations.

As a dual national of Portugal (having been born in the overseas province of Mozambique) and growing up in South Africa, I am a product of the age of discovery, as both the aforementioned southern African countries were halfway houses between Europe and Asia at the outset. Thanks for the really detailed video and superb artwork portraying the events that Portugal used to carve its place in history, both good and bad. I like the thought that the king picked a diplomat to carry out his wishes ('walk softly'), but gave him a stick, in the form of an armada, 'just in case'.

Like Eusébio was! Now he rest eternally in the Portuguese National Phanteon amoung other great Portuguese People that contributed for our Nation. My father is also Mozambican-Portuguese. I was already born in Portugal in the 80's. 🇵🇹❤🇲🇿

@@FlashPointHx I can't wait to see it. Back at college, about 15 years ago, I've made a research work about Vasco da Gama's second voyage, very lesser known than his first. It was a voyage of conquest, no longer of discoveries. Although my major is in Archaeology, I enjoyed that research a lot, since I had to read some chronicles of the time. I was shocked by the cruel tactics used then, something we don't usually know about if we stick to most of the modern synthesis texts that portrait just the heroic version of the facts. Keep up with the good work.

Pedro Álvares de Gouveia was his correct name. Cabral was his father's surname. Pedro had 6 brothers and was the youngest and, for this reason, according to the custom of the time, he did not receive his father's surname but rather his mother's. However, due to the fame he acquired as a navigator, he came to be known as Gouveia, the son of Cabral, with the name Cabral later incorporated by historians as a surname. Ref. "Brasil - Segredo de Estado" - by historian and brazilian former ambassador in USA, Sérgio Correa da Costa.

Pedro Teixeira, the Portuguese and Brazilian hero, who together with the Indians and our Brazilian People, defeated the English and Dutch, who tried to take our Amazon. The Hollywood political and film industry doesn't make a film about this story...

Hey my pleasure - I think its really hard to tell history without having a map to look at and images to see.

In Indian History, we read how Portuguese were the 1st to arrive and the last foreign power to leave India (1498 till 1960) they were less in population, but extremely influential and brave. There's a dish in my state (Maharashtra) called Pav Bhaji. (Pav = Bread = Paõ) so there's lots of cultural exchanges that took place during Portuguese rule.

Portuguese landed in 1498 in a not really united India. And only Goa was a Portuguese State till 1960. A lot of Portuguese have Goense Ancestry. The family of our Prime Minister (António Costa) for the last 10 years is Portuguese-Goense. India and other Asian Regions influenced Portuguese food a lot. Specially in the use of spices (pepper, curry, cinnamon, etc). There's a lot of Indian, Nepalese, Chinese and Japanese restaurants in Portugal. I love Indian food! 🇵🇹❤️🇮🇳

After conquering the Achaemenid Persian Empire, the Macedonian army undertook an expedition into the Indian subcontinent. Within two years, Alexander expanded the Macedonian Empire to include present-day Punjab and Sindh in what is modern-day Pakistan, surpassing the earlier frontiers that had been established by the Persian conquest of the Indus Valley."

BEFORE COLOMBO - And of course you will have to go to the museum in Toronto to recognize the Portuguese presence and prove that the navigator João Vaz Corte-Real was in Canada in 1473. “History is very complex, as there are always several versions of events”, highlighted the president of the Real Canadian Portuguese Historial Museum

Fun fact. The first written record of the word Brasil to indicate the land was as early as 1502. It was spelt 'Brazill', and it was used by a Portuguese captain, António do Campo (the 4th time a portuguese expedition went do Brazil) instead of Vera Cruz or Santa Cruz (both were used). This suggests that the usage of Brasil was almost as old as Vera Cruz.

@@FlashPointHx The widest accepted version is that the name comes from the Brazilwood (Paubrasilia echinata), a tree that yelds a red dye which was a very sought out product. The name itself probably came from the Portuguese word Brasa (eng. ember), as the wood is red in appearance. Apparently the Portuguese recognise the tree as some sort of Sappanwood, which was already used to produce the red dye [edit: but very scarce]. In time, the economic root of the name superceded the political/religious one, apparently in common use at least in 1502.

​@@jorge6207There was a mythical island in the Atlantic called Brazil. It appears as Brazil on the Catalan Atlas of 1375. So I bet that's the true origin of the name. When the news arrived in Portugal of Cabral's discovery, they thought it was that Island of Brazil and the name was picked up by people, even if it was officially called differently.

It's difficult as the zeitgeist in Portugal passed from nationalist orthodox exaltation immediately to a state of constant self guilt, with nothing in between. On the other hand, the negative reaction to something like that would make for perfect promotion. The historiography is way more balanced since the 1960s, but it never spilt over to popular conscience.

Like always, absolutely brilliant. I think we're all hoping for a next one on Vasco da Gama second voyage 🙏

It's very likely that the Portuguese already knew about the existence of America. It the 1470 decade, Danish and Norwegian king, Christian I, knowing that the portuguese were becoming some of the best sailors in Europe, hired for a joint Danish-Portuguese Expedition to reclaim contact with old viking settlements in Iceland and Greenland. Naval tech and knowledge had expanded a lot since then so it's not too farfetched to say the danish and the portuguese easily reached those places through island hoping and go even further, reaching Canada in North America. This would have given the portuguese the knowledge that even if they don't exactly how much or the shape of the land, that knew there was something to the west, way before Columbus, and tried to keep it a secret form Castile. Some feitorias even popped in Canada but their maintenance was costly and didn't bring much that the portuguese wanted. With Vasco da Gama reaching India and the riches from it, those feitorias were quickly abandoned because money was on the East.

After 2 weeks of your video release I was overwhelmed with such information -and so proud!. Let me tell you we did not learn this bit of our history this way at school (early stage). I'm supposed to know better. For a start, and based on your amazing videos, I will get The Conquerors book (the base to produce this "version" - with all due respect). (So sorry for the bad grammar by the way). And thank you very much for this view. Not proud nor ashamed - those were different times. In a positive way of seeing things, what a bunch of crazy guys mastering, or trying to master the seas and winds. To explore and to expand territory - but at what cost? (to the "conquered/discovered" people). Definitely different times, different people, different feelings, different minds. Thank you for this approach. Now I have another book to read, so I hate you ;)

Pedro Alvares Cabral is a hero for me, a Brazilian. Being descendent of such brave men who explored the unknown in the name of the cross and the king, im proud to say. Thank you, Portugal. It is only by you, portuguese people (mainly D.João VI) that today my country is united. Even if the liberals keep trying to obscure OUR history, I, and my family, shall not.

There is, of course, a very dark side to it but the drive, skill and tenacity of the likes of Cabral, Vasco da Gama, Francisco de Almeida, Afonso de Albuquerque and Duarte Pacheco Pereira is inexplicable. Small country, small population, very far away from home and not a great technological advantage how did they manage to set the global world and control world trade?

People were just tougher back then. They weren't as afraid of death because they had seen it all their lives. Not wanting to be a peasant probably also kicked their asses into high gear.
