Great cliffhanger. The Battle of Cochin of 1504 is as spectacular as it gets.Dom Duarte Pacheco Pereira had cojones the size the caravels he rode on. Hope to see this brilliant series go all the way to portuguese presence in Japan so you can tackle the Battle of Fukuda Bay and the Nossa Senhora da Graça incident.

It is almost certainly the case that Dom Duarte Pacheco Pereira was chosen to carry out a reconnaissance of the coast of Brazil prior to the official discovery in 1500 AD. One of the greatest sons of Portugal.

Yes - a lot of people feel he should have gotten the credit instead of Cabral - but something happened and Pereira feel out of favor in a big way after his legendary defense of Cochin

Yeah history is so underrated as a field in general. Love being able to bring it to life. When you tell it like a story it becomes so much more compelling

I am so glad you will be covering the battle of Cochin. It's such a fantastic battle at several levels (the incredible odds, the impact of the tides, the first major land battle fought by Europeans in India since Alexander, etc.), and yet I don't think I've seen a single history channel cover it here on KZread. Unbelievably underrated.

It also set the stage for the Portuguese to dominate the Indian Ocean - had Cochin been lost the other city states would have banded behind Calicut and the Portuguese empire in India would have been seriously hampered

@@AjaySingh-mh7bq Not the modern day country of India, but the Indian Subcontinent. He crossed the Indus and conquered most of Punjab and Sindh after the battle of the Hydaspes, but he might not have crossed the present borders of India (which occupies only a part of historical India).

This is just amazing. Such a small number of Portuguese running amock in the most extreme of frontiers, trailblazing, running gauntlets and at the same time establishing titanic precedents of world power dynamics for centuries to come. It's crazy how numerous these individual guys' battles and escapades were and any one of them really could have gone the other way. It's a fascinating but still oddly overlooked time period in the mainstream (probably mainly down to Americans being more comfortable with English and Emglish language history when it comes to the old world) It's reminiscient of Pizarro and the like. Anyway, cool stuff.

An important factor to consider is how and why these men were in these ships. Lots of them were coming from harsh, poor interior Portugal. In the outside they were fighting for their King but in fact each one of them was looking to get rich and get a better life, they had a kind of Viking mentality and they also engaged in authorized piracy for their own benefit (undocumented...) Moreover this was considered Crusade so the enemy was kind of dehumanized some times...Many died, many returned and many stayed in those regions marrying locals thus creating a new generation of mixed race/culture people. So they fought for their own future in each battle, bravely to the last man, with crazy accounts of almost impossible victories. I recommend reading "Peregrinaçāo" a first person account of all this amazing and unique reality. These sailors/adventurers had also Celtic blood and mentality running in their veins and many were descendants of brave warrior people that were able to stop Roman legions advances in the Iberian Peninsula thousands of years before, but that is another story 😅

@@FlashPointHx Yeah. I'm not perfectly sure, but I think that Duarte Pacheco Pereira was the first to realize and study the relationship between tides and the moon. Incredible how this 'first-hand', technical knowledge was used to great effect to thwart Portugal's rivals.

This is just amazing. I've read Roger Crowley's book "Conquerors" years ago, and it is without doubt one of the best descriptions of the portuguese presence in India. To be able to "translate" those adventures to your channel in such an amazing and visual way is nothing short of outstanding. Well done, congrats and keep them coming!

Really Loved this series...all thumbs up...early school gave these "explorers" a brave hero's face, out to discover the new world for the greater good (cheer, Yeah!). This paints a more realistic picture of Economics and Greed, and Military might and Power, and a ruthlessness to which we were not exposed (all of which continue today in various reincarnations).

The battle that comes after this would make an amazing movie, it would probably need to be toned down because people would not believe it was real. Amazing work, can't wait for the next one

This is a story of how Humanity moved on into a new Era that shaped the world as we know today, having as the main character a small nation with low resources but with great dreams and hopes for its future. Not more or less important than other peoples' and countries' histories but unfortunately not well represented at all among mainstream global media and entertainment industry. Anglo-American and Nordic history and legacy are pushed to us as the main narrative while other also important and crucial parts of History are completely ignored! Reaching India and all that is perfectly told in these amazing videos is just half of the whole story. This is a story that begins in Lisbon, passes through Africa, India but also Thailand and Malasya, going all the way to China, Japan, Indonesia and even Australia...These men moved by a sense of Mission and also Religious passion, were able to miraculously connect the dots of Planet Earth and Humanity through Knowledge, Diplomacy, Intermixing, but also Violence and Suffering of course: as Human as it gets (and in line with what was the norm at the time) To sum it up, this would be a major hit if turned into a Netflix Series, catering to millions of people across the Globe in several Continents because this, with all the bad and the good, is part of their History and is incarved not only in time but also in their DNA (Brazil, Africa, India, Indonesia, Timor, Thailand, Singapore, Malasya, Macau (China), to name a few It's the untold story of how humanity become truly connected for the first time.

I would say this was done by a Portuguese or with the help of a Portuguese cause you deliver all the important details 😅 You should keep up with the story, there is a lot to tell about the following years when they reach Thailand and Malasya, getting control of the most important port of the Indic Ocean: Malacca. And afterwards they got to China and Japan, introducing firearms to Samurais thus changing Japanese History forever. The target market for these videos is huge, there are ~250 Million Portuguese speaking people and this important piece of History is very under represented, to say the least. The Discovery of Brazil could also deserve a video by itself. Happy to collaborate in case you need any help. Cheers all the way from Lisbon! 🇵🇹

Great video, again. Loved that you mentioned the Frol de la Mar, the seasoned Admiral-ship that served Da Gama, Almeida and Albuquerque for long 15 years! (10 years was considered the maximum that a war vessel could sail...). It seems that its Spanish name was given by João da Nova, a Galician man of war that skipped the vessel in India under Almeida and until Nova's death in Cochim in 1509. Almeida commanded the battle of Diu from Frol

Yeah I’m a big fan of his work - Crowley is elegant with his prose and doesn’t get bogged down with too much unneeded detail - his 1453 book was awesome as welll and I use a lot of his quotes in my ‘Constantinople’ series

To achieve that not only you had to link all continents/people for the first time (create a global world), but also antagonise a lot of rich and populous states and have full control of the south atlantic, all indian Ocean, red sea, Persian gulf, south china sea, sea of Japan.... and have numerous outpost everywhere (in India, Sri Lanka, Malasya, Indonesia, China, Japan, arabic peninsula, in the coast of Africa...). What are the odds of that from a minuscule country in Europe with a population 14x smaller than France?

The hopes of islam to conquer the world sunk on the sea of Diu. After that battle the mighty Ottoman Empire never were the same again. So it's actually hard to define if the monopolisation of the spice trade by Portugal was a commerce endeaveur or an financial crusade.

@@renanschimuneck9369 It may have been indeed a crusade endeavour as only that explains the steel mentality of these very few men in the face of certain defeat (and the creation of the global world and monopolisation of world trade just a tool to limit/suppress islam). The obsession to later on conquer Morocco/north africa will be forever linked to Portugal's demise as the world number one power.

I thought entire trading empires among Indonsesians/Malay, Indians and China were founded on monopolising and protecting the trade through the Straits of Malacca for instance, and other such places. also I don't think the Arabs would have peacefully shared the Indian ocean with incoming Europeans if they had a choice.

It was still a free trade zone - even the Arabs / Mamluks / Ottomans were not going for total dominance

This is the kind of video that gets a like even before watching it and at the end I want to give it 2 more. Not only this part of history is amazing, it is well documented. Congrast on the fantastic work to give life to this amazing piece of history that is not known to most people and that is just sad, since all of it is just amazing. Don’t stop making videos with this part of history, these videos will get way more popular while time goes by and more people know of its existence, I’m of right now, sharing this with just Everybody I Know. In 1511, the Flor de la Mar became the most valuable shipwreck in history after it participated in the Portuguese Conquest of Malacca, then sank in a storm off the coast of Malaysia. The ship was known to be ridiculously unseaworthy when fully laden.

@@Luzitanium no it was about half the size of the Botafogo (which was 1000 tons) - but the latter was built 30 years later
