The amount of comments here that fault simon for his merge with the Malcolm lorry honestly stagger me. The little i10 in front is what put him into a bit of a pickle by only putting his/her foot down when they noticed to lorry coming in from behind, rather than just making speed from the get-go. He could probably have made it safely in front with that 320 brake if he instantly put his foot down when the little i10 did so too. But a second or two later it was just too late. Simon did great, held up absolutely no one and got on with their ride. You don't "have" to get in front you know, if you can't make it in front safely your safe options are 1. Accelerate slower and merge in behind; or 2. Stop on the slip road and merge in when its safe; or 3. Continue on the shoulder a bit and merge in when its safe (This can be dangerous as the shoulder may be occupied or contaminated with junk. In the video there is actually a lorry up ahead on the shoulder. If you are going to employ this solution you really have to know what you're doing) But never just assume someone else is going to help you. Especially when the consequence of the combination of them not doing that, and your made decision, is a not unlikely crash.

This criticism also surprised me as I would have done exactly the same. There are too many people who push on into something before they know it's safe ahead. This is a mentality that causes so many problems on our roads and the amount of comments even within my viewer base shows my work is not done. @Evolixe top comment of the day! Well done 👊

You should never put yourself in a position where your safety is reliant on an assumed course of action from the driver ahead. Simon's driving otherwise was very safe, if a little hesitant, but that might be due to the presence of the passenger. I think it's fair to criticise this emerge, it wasn't great at all, and this channel is all about how to improve. Nobody is perfect and there was room for improvement here.

Stopping on the slip road is the most terrible choice and it's always better to continue on the shoulder if you can't merge. I would agree with your comment if he was driving a heavy vehicle, but he was driving an EV with 300+ hp that can outrun every lorry instantly and that's also what the lorry driver expected him to do, yet he didn't and forced the lorry to move. What if the lorry wasn't able to move over in that situation? The cammer would have forced him to brake hard. Nothing of this is safer than just merging in front of the lorry if you can do that.

@@Asto508 Nobody forced the lorry to move over. The Ev6 speed was matched to emerge behind the lorry. A lot of people could learn something from this, so you can also get from a to b without any form of stress. I drive an MG ZS EV and my car has the same issue when you switch between Eco, normal and sport mode. It remaps the throttle so dropping from normal mode to Eco would trigger regen braking and going from Eco to normal or normal to sport would trigger acelleration. I tend to set at the start of the journey and leave it so it doesn't really bother me, but the odd time I forget to change I do have to be very careful when I switch modes. Nice to see some local sights, I live in Wakefield myself so was nice to see this eposide.

I'm an EV6 GT owner and mostly drive in ECO mode as, like Simon's GT Line it's a dual motor car, ECO will have it drive mostly in rear motor only mode. Also, it's important to not use i-pedal mode as that puts it on permanent dual motor. I recommend just using 'AUTO' regen, when braking for a junction etc with nothing in front pull the left paddle to decelerate, get used to it and it's actually very good. The 'lurching' when going to Sport mode is even more pronounced when going from ECO -> GT (which is a single green button press) where not only is it changing the throttle map but also engaging the second motor.

Also a fellow GT owner and agree, we drive ours in Eco almost all the time as there is enough power at around 300, Normal and Sport gives us 430, and GT gives us the full 580. I personally tend to have regen set to 1 as it mimics closest to an automatic car which is where I feel most comfortable driving.

On the accelerator pedal mapping, my PHEV does radically alter the pedal response as you change modes from ECO->normal->sport and vice-versa *_but_* it doesn't do what Simon says that KIA does and doesn't speed up as you switch into sport. It sounds as if the KIA treats each absolute pedal position as x% of power for that range, whereas mine reacts to relative pedal movement after switching ranges (and presumably recalibrates when you next use the full or zero pedal positions). Either way, for me, mode changes are perfectly smooth. For reference, mine's a BMW 330e.

The ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 are sister cars, they are based on the same build just different styling - we are a 'slightly' younger generation and went for the ioniq 5 :P With them being sister cars they have much of the same issues: Going by the issue with reversing, we found the auto hold is very stubborn when trying to reverse and you end up shooting off far faster than comfortable - so for reversing we tend to turn off the auto hold. With that changes from eco to normal to sport - yes, while driving it is very 'jerky' when changing as Simon says.

Even tho my Honda isn’t a hybrid, it’s a similar style of driving. None of that brake, gears, I think it’s called “shift torque” Can go along way without using the gas pedal. And it also means you can avoid using the brakes as much - as long as you read the road ahead. I literally just spent a week being ferried around in a mix of Prius hybrids, automatic (automated manuals) diesel fords, and manual Skoda Octavia diesel. The Prius hybrid is by far the closest to my Honda…and they drive very different to a manual diesel or even fords power shift automated transmission coupled to a diesel engine. It’s like one system just sails around, while the older systems it’s like clunky,

Proceeding towards the end of the slip road created a dangerous and confusing situation that pressured the lorry driver to change lanes. Another option would have been to boot it and use the acceleration of the car to get well ahead, keeping an eye on the small van in lane 2.

The space was not enough in front (dashcams distort), especially with the vehicle overtaking the lorry lane two. • @shm5547

    @shm5547

    11 ай бұрын

@@ashley_neal it wasn't helped by the red car ahead being a bit slow up the slip road. First choice is to slow down on the slip here, the only traffic behind was a lorry coming up the slip and they were some way off. Certainly using acceleration to get in front of the lorry would have been riskier and maybe not possible as you say the distortion on the camera makes the gaps look bigger. I'm not sure who beeped the horn, but if it was the lorry driver, I don't think they were helping out - they were taking evasive action. Not every use of the horn is a friendly 'I'm here' toot! Trouble is, people use the horn like that and it loses its impact.

Great video, and I'm an EV advocate, so always find it interesting to see fellow EV drivers on the road. Based on the footage I'm not so sure, and respectfully disagree with you, Ashley. Perhaps the view is distorted, but my concern is if the lorry didn't give way, our Kia friend (sorry, I'm bad with names) would have had to stop harshly, possibly forcing the lorry behind to brake too. It's tricky with lorries creeping from behind, and can completely understand the pressure they put on smaller cars on the road when moving nearby. Perhaps not accelerating out of that situation would have been prudent, but further anticipation and planning on the onramp would have been advisable. Also with the pressure of knowing he has a well renown KZreadr driving instructor filming his drive, it may have been extra distracting. We're all human 😅

42:12 cars generally have stiffer springs in the rear than the front. One reason why is due to the natural frequencies of the springs, when going over a speed bump they allow the car to stay level (even though the front wheel hits the bump before the rear wheels) rather than bobbing back and forth which can make passengers ill.

@@aljowen While the content and approach has changed/matured since I did mine they roughly follow this path: - Fleet Driver Training: Aimed at company car/van drivers. Normally a few hours and aimed at improving awareness and observation to improve safety. - IAM: Accessed through local groups with 'training' provided by observing and advising. They are looking to standardise the level of skill in the observers but this is a good way to lift your level significantly with low level of entry/cost. The exam is (currently) a one-off test with a Police Driving Instructor or someone similar. Pass/fail -RoSPA: Uses the same skills as IAM (built on the System of Car Control and the Police Drivers Handbook). Again, accessible through local groups but perhaps less off them. Test is the same as IAM with a few tweaks and your pass is graded Gold/Silver/Bronze. There is some argument over if a Bronze or SIlver is equivalent to an IAM pass. The biggest difference is that you need to pass a renew test every 3 years. -IAM Masters: heralded as the highest standard of civilian driving in the country. This is available to all IAM members and some other direct exceptions. A pass at this level is equal to or just above a RoSPA gold with the additional grade of Distinction which is the highest standard outside of emergency services etc. I've been discussing with Ashley if I should do the Masters. It depends on your appetite and time commitment. I'd suggest doing IAM as a starting point and seeking out a local group that you feel comfortable with.

My plug in hybrid alters the throttle response in ECO mode in both fully electric and petrol modes. Moreover, it also provides haptic feedback on the throttle pedal so that you can feel the difference with your foot, and does similar if you turn on the speed limiter generating a soft stop you can feel as you reach the current limit. If it's done well enough you almost don't notice it, you just subconsciously respond to the car's apparent reluctance to respond to the throttle. I suspect that it being easily consciously noticeable would be a sign of a poor implementation. Being pedantic, we probably should both say 'accelerator pedal response' as obviously there is no literal throttle in an EV.

I hate to be the dissenting voice here, but I don't like EVs. They're like LED lights, they're being forced on us whether we want them or not. I don't like the idea of having to stop and charge up for 20 minutes even once on a long journey; they're fine for a city car, assuming you have somewhere to charge them at home, but not everyone has off-street parking and therefore space for a charger. Some of us live in blocks of flats where the only option is on-street parking and where the nearest public chargers are half a mile away and when you get there, the three or four charge points that are there are in use. I do wish hydrogen had taken off instead. The two most interesting cars I've ever driven were the Hyundai ix35 and the Toyota Mirai. Absolutely brilliant, drive just like an EV (well they are EVs, just without the plugging in bit) and take no longer to fuel than a petrol or diesel car. The only thing that lets them down is the lack of refuelling infrastructure, there are literally only a handful in the whole of the UK, most of them in London. Up here in the north of Scotland, there are two, both in Aberdeen. The next one south is Sheffield. I'll stick with my petrol car for now, thanks all the same.

You make a very good point. The irony is that they are excellent city cars but that is exactly where the challenges of off-street parking and charging are at their worst. There are new innovations coming along all the time for kerbside charging but nobody has solved the issue for those in blocks of flats or shared parking areas. As for the long distances. With the EV6 it's not an issues. 200+ miles without a stop, at today's motorway speeds is about as long as I (personally) want/can drive without a comfort break. Hydrogen would/should/could be a viable alternative and I'm sure with investment it makes sense, certainly for the bus and truck world but it also comes with its own challenges and the vast amount of electricity required to create the product cannot be ignored. Same way as the electric fuelling the EV6 isn't as 'green' as some people will have you believe. A topic for another day though.

The other week my passenger bent forwards to get something out of a bag, and put their head smack in line with the left door mirror _just_ as I needed to make a mirror check. A discussion, OK a diatribe, about why that it a poor thing to do then ensued. If I don't need the leg room for a passenger in the back I normally put the front passenger seat way back so that a passenger's head is naturally obscuring the B pillar, minimising the proportion of the view that is normally blocked.

I am also sad that there appear to be no retro battery fit options; with the Leaf, you can get some of the latest, largest battery packs to fit all but the very oldest cars; but the pack from the current Soul EV apparently wont fit the old car.

@@alanmorrison163 The Soul EV was originally KIA's "compliance" car, like Nissan's "Fluence" (so unpopular, I have only ever seen one - and that an advert to sell it s/h) and Mercedes B250e, a thrown together EV from an existing ICE car to meet California's EV requirements. The fact it turned out to be a very practical and popular car was a miracle; the Niro was designed ground up to take ICE, ICE+Hybrid, ICE + PHEV, or EV drive-trains. However, although the Niro is a very nice car, it lacks the character of the Soul; it is, in fact, souless; the Soul has a silhouette that stands out in any group of cars; and can confidently be chucked around corners on twisty country roads - more like an original Mini converted to EV, than the actually BMW Mini EV. I tried out all the early EVs, as they match my driving needs these days; as I am too ill to travel far. The Leaf driver's seat is awful; the seat padding is too thin, and the springs dig into my arse. The Merc is range crippled by the lack of ANY fast or rapid charging option - and the cabin is too narrow; my shoulder was hard up against the B pillar. Renaults offerings are great if you are doing hundreds of miles a week - but for what I do, battery rental is more that I was paying in petrol; besides, I vowed never to have another Renault after the "fun" I had getting parts for the last one. And all of the above are too low for my poor back, which has been broken more than once. In the Soul, you sit higher, the seats are generously sized and padded, visibility is great and with one exception, the controls are well laid out; and at 6'6", I still have plenty of room between the top of my head and the roof liner. Sadly, not only does it seem there wont be a 3rd gen of the Soul, but we wont see the wireless charging version Kia made using the original Soul EV, where you just park it over an induction loop and get 10KWh charging.

A consequence of the IAM training probably. There's a strong emphasis in the IAM world on having somewhere else to go if it all goes wrong. That all has its origin in the police driver training roots of the IAM approach to driving. In an emergency the police don't always have the luxury of being able to take the slow and steady approach and have to push things to the point where they _are_ in effect racing on the roads. If you're going to do that safely _and_ maintain progress then sometimes you need to have escape routes planned that are a bit more aggressive than just "brake or move over a lane". While you wouldn't plan to use those in that fashion in more normal driving, it doesn't hurt to constantly look for escape routes from worst case scenarios and have a prepared plan for how you might use them in mind. e.g. coming up to a blind bend - "Is there a run off that I can use if someone comes speeding around this corner on my side of the road?".
