Driven- 2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country in Sweden

All-wheel drive crossovers haul people and cargo over tough terrain with ease. So does the 2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country but it adds a lower center of gravity for better handling when the roads are clear and twisty. Tom Voelk travels to Luleå Sweden near the Arctic Circle to test this low-profile crossover (okay, it’s a wagon) in its natural habitat in -7 degree conditions with fellow writer Jason Golson. And don’t forget about fika…

Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. S.T T. That’s basics, big heavy tall brick vs a small short light wagon... also for validation look up MPG ratings, and safety ratings that are on every window sticker.

    the v60 is - hands down - one of the best looking vehicles on the mkt .. the bigger backseat in this lastest iteration makes it very usable and practical as well. Some minor problems with the gorgeous but sometimes hard to use infotainment system would seem to be the only demerit. MPG could also be a bit better. I believe they are working on integrating mild hybrid tech into all their vehicles. If MPG could get closer to 30 without increasing the price point this would be a no-brainer.

    WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! Sooooo beautiful!!! In the past, people who needed more room would buy a station wagon. It amazes me with all the dire predictions of climate change/global warming, North Americans are buying huge SUV's, while Europe is leading the way with smaller vehicles. It's a shame we can't get the Plug-In Hybrid version here in North America. This is one vehicle I'm just drooling over.

    I own a 2016 version of this car, I’ve had it for a year now, love it! I bought it for $14,500 US under MSRP, and certified with 7 year/100K miles warranty included! Where can you get a deal like that? It was the last one they had left at the end of the year, they had 3 of them collecting dust on the showroom. This was the most loaded of the 3 ‘16’s to boot! Why a 2016 you ask? The last one with a real 5 cylinder with a real growl to it, doesn’t sound like a 4 cylinder vacuum cleaner when you rev it! No shitty start/stop feature, no big iPad in the middle of the dash, and one of THE last true Volvo’s made! Volvo for life ❤️ my SwedishMetal!

    Very good deal and choise! I own 2015 R Design version with REAL T6 (3.0 I-6 engine, 6 speed automatic). The last dinosaur! T6 of 2017 (4 cylinder) 8 speed is not so reliable. Good old days are passing.. :( Soon we will get 2 cylinders with 4 turbos with no soul or Duracell's bunnies..

    I bought a used 4 year old 2015 V60 T5 AWD with only 23,500 km on it. Price $23,995 Cdn vs original price of over $42,000 Cdn. It came off lease and was immaculate, and obviously garaged a lot. That is 4 years of depreciation with only 1 year equivalent use! The bargains are out there if you look.

    Hilariously, this is why I got my V60 Cross Country. Yes it's a 2017 model, but it does a nice job on trails and dirt roads. It replaced a 2006 S60 T5 that also bombed a dirt road in its time. Even only fwd, the S60 did better in snow than a lot of 4wd trucks around here.

    As an XC70 (2004 & 2014) owner, I am looking forward to the V60 XC. I much prefer the wagon profile. Wagons handle better than crossovers and SUVs,~ there is still some little boy racer in me that prefers handling over space in the sky. BTW, the Volvo touch screen is easy to use on day 2, it becomes very intuitive.

    @@__-fm5qv How is the C30? I might be in need for a car soon and thinking about getting a C30, how do you feel it compare to a polo or golf?

  • @__-fm5qv

    @__-fm5qv

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Cowsy The C30 has been lovely so far in the month that I've owned it! The model I've got is the 2.0 L petrol. So not as fast as the T5 would be if your thinking of that but speed wise its what Id describe "adequate/pleasant", because it gets up to speed nicely without revving the balls off it but its not amazing fast either, its more relaxed. I can't comment on what its like compared to the golf but I have driven the 1.2L Polo before. The polo is suprisingly nippy at low speeds I found, but it lacks a bit of punch and feeling of stability at higher motorway speeds compared to the C30. In other aspects of driving I found the gearbox on the polo to be slicker and easier, with the C30 being notchier and more mechanical in feel. So its a toss up of what you prefer. The steering in both is pretty direct, you always know where your pointing, but not much feel from either through the wheel like most cars. I would say that if you need to park in tight spaces a lot the polo is definitely easier as its narrower (the C30 really does feel suprisingly wide at times) and has a smaller turning circle. Both cars have plenty of room in the front with the C30 having maybe a little more in back, but sacrificing a middle seat and some boot space. And both cars are generally fairly comfortable to drive imo. Personally I'd go with the C30 just for the look of it alone, I am a little bias though xD. But both are competent cars and I certainly wouldn't rule out either until youve driven them.

    Pretty good review Tom. For me it was nice to hear your comments on the advanced driving beam headlights currently under review by our government. According to the IIHS website these may become legal in the US by 2020. About ten years after they were introduced in Europe. Also your mention of the less than easy interface on the touchscreen. Too bad they haven’t gone back to knobs and buttons for some of the controls. I’ve owned a couple Volvo’s from the mid oughts and loved their comfort and utility.

    Hi Tom, I share your gushing enthusiasm for 'ladder-free' utility vehicles aka station wagons and look forward to the day we have a full selection of them at approximately 50% of this price point. You also deserve great credit for being upfront about the generosity of Geely in financing the trip. Have you already calculated how many acres of Douglas Fir you will have to plant In Washington to cover your carbon footprint for this rapid fire visit to the Arctic? #SaveTheWagon

    Tom, glad you had a nice trip. If I was in the market for a $45kUS wagon, the V60 (T5 Momentun) is tops on the list; however, I'm not, so the Alltrack-S/SE 6spd is where my money ($30K) will go when that day comes. Volvos are getting better, but still too many add-on packages that kill the "value" side of the equation. It's amazing what the right tires can do. Again, Volvo has my money, if I had that much to give for a car.

    Hi Tom thanks for a nice vid! Very fun to watch! About the tires i would be very surprised if they were using any other studded tires than Nokian Hakkapelitta 8 (or maby 9) since this is the best tires there is for this condisions. The finns make the best tires for winterconditions - period! (I`m swedish btw). Second best tires - in my humble opinion - is the Continental ContiIceContact 2 tiers. All test during the past years puts the Hakka 8 on top and i use them myself 🙂.

    I had a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9's (the tires used here) on my old V60. They performed well on dry pavement, just very loud. The Nokian R3 is the studless variant.
