Drinker's Chasers - A Drunken Rant About Rings of Power

Ойын-сауық

So in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rings of Power showrunner JD Payne dismissed the "patently evil" fans for criticising his show. I had a few things to say about that, and I did.

You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you're selling it, you want to sell it! It's actually made me realize that they have narrowed their audience down to people who are unintelligent consumers who buy anything with the name they like on it, much like videogames. It's sad that people legitimately ignore what's good for what they are familiar with. Same people still watch superhero movies. Same people don't wash their hands.

Drinker, your point here is PRECISELY what the story of Melkor is. Melkor saw something beautiful that someone else made that he could not and through jealousy and a desire to honor himself over and above the original creator, Melkor introduced "discordant tones" to the narrative of the creator. This is exactly what you're describing with the new show makers and their goals.

Indeed! The *whole point* of Lord of the Rings was to be *timeless* -not belonging to any mortal epoch or era. It was superidealistic when it was written; it is ethereal and mystical today, and it will be transcendent and halcyon in the distant future. For those empty-headed idiots who insist that it "change with the times," I quote this riddle from *The Hobbit* . "This thing all things devours. Birds, beasts, trees, and flowers. Gnaws iron; bites steel. Grinds hard stones into meal. Slays king; ruins town. And makes the mountains come crumbling down."

That's the absolute truth! Even the LOTR films, well-done though they are, fall far short of the perfection of the books, and it grieves me that in today's society many will never know the brilliance of the written works. They'll only have seen the movies; they won't know anything about Tom Bombadil, or how Samwise replanted the Shire... or how the Shire was so badly affected by that far-distant war that its inhabitants knew so little about. Oh crap, now I've depressed myself; this grieves me deeply.

Sure, Peter made changes here and there, but the love the man has for Tolkien is evident in the final product of the original trilogy AND the amount of years, dedication and heart he put into every SINGLE detail to pay tribute to the world Tolkien built. Love and passion you two DO NOT understand and will never understand. We love this man, his work, the world he built and the impact he’s had on us. Drinker makes the very good point, and not used enough, that Tolkien is simply superior to these writers. That's why we were alarmed when all we knew about the show is that they would 'adapt' it, 'modernize' it, etc. The idea of sheltered activists improving Tolkien's work, a linguist, writer and teacher who had more life experience that the entire writer's group combined, was absurd and has proven to be an inconciebable disaster (in a sense; in another sense, Amazon never cared about the quality so it's not that much of a failure).

It's as plain as the day is long that Tolkien had a very creative and charming mind which he could freely detach from the world he was living in. Especially if you watch interviews of him alive and see the kind of critics he had in his time you realize he lived in a time where it was considered far more silly to dwell on the type of fictions he was writing. He was fighting headlong against stigmas and played a big role in tearing those stigmas down to where we today can now take these fictional works so seriously and not be considered total losers for it; a benefit not only for fans but for the writers also who now vandalize his work.

Tolkien spent years, YEARS! perfecting his work. Countless revisions, getting advice from his friends (some of whom were the best in their field in the entire world), and that is why it has withstood the test of time so well and been published all over the world. These hacks admitted they came up with this story in a single brainstorming session ... it is pretty much a "first draft". Explaining why the writing is so bad, and makes no sense.

I was lucky enough when, as a child, many decades ago, the very first book anyone ever read to me was The Hobbit. It was absolutely riveting, and I have since read it, and re-read it, many times. It was also the first book I read to my children. I also read, and re-read, The Lord of the Rings. I even sent a close friend and colleague off to war with a copy of the latter, which he found totally absorbing, especially given the real-world events he was about to face, did face, and came back from. He also passed on the same enjoyment and wonder to his own children. Then along came Peter Jackson, whose Films were good, but they never captured the good v evil very well, so were a little soft and cartoon-like compared to the original text. A compromise that did dumb the material down to a considerable extent. One Hobbit, in particular, spent far too much time being very annoying, self-absorbed and over-sensitive, making three of the Films very hard to re-watch. That's a shame, because many other actors played their roles well. Then along came Amazon...I have nothing at all polite to say about that.

The LOTR films do fall far short of their source, but still were well-made; to be totally true to the source, those movies would have had to be over 10 hours long for each book. That's not possible, but at least P. Jackson was as close to the original as he could get (with some omissions/changes that still rankle me.) The Hobbit series I found unwatchable. He strayed too far from the source, he inserted people & events that weren't in the source, there was a whole lot of extra dialogue inserted for God-know-what reason. I watched the first two, then gave up on them; my blood pressure wouldn't allow me to continue, they infuriated me so!

Yes, OUR world is komplex and there are good people on both sides of a war. However in Tolkiens world it seems to be a bit more straight forward. When you have creatures that were created by corrupting elves with black magic and their master wants to dominate every living being on the planet, then it is pretty easy to decide who the good guys are. And that is one of the beatiful aspects of the genre: Fantasy doesn't have to mirror the real world

The only solace I have with ROP is Tolkien's original works stand so tall that people will continue to enjoy them long after Amazon quietly removes this from its platform in a few years and tries to forget all about this abomination of a show

You wanna the sad reality? Its that Amazon isn't going to let this series fade away like a bad memory, there's simply been too much money sunk into it for that to be allowed to happen, whats going to be more likely is that Amazon is going to continue pushing this series to be legitimized. Not through hard work or respect but simply through flooding the public zeitgeist with the brand. Don't be surprised if in five years Tolkiens original books start getting printed with covers that reference rings of power, don't be surprised when anytime something relating to the jackson trilogy comes it it WILL be followed by discussions of RoP,, Think of the marvel characters that have been around for a decade now, the ones made for the sake of diversity hires or stand-ins for the original iconic characters, they're stories and books have always sold abysmally but the characters have endured and now, like it or not, are generally accepted by the normies, they have been cemented in pop culture alongside the ones they were meant to replace, I promise you amazon will do everything in its power to ensure RoP is never forgotten no matter how low it sinks, if only because, again it will be cemented in the zeitgeist.

Even if they stubbornly push on, 40 years from now, no one will remember this abomination, but JRR Tolkiens work will still be standing tall.

@@runnytimtim86none44 I have to agree with you. The covers of LotR new prints already represent RoP. The press and shill media already claim this,... shit... , is a prequel. Most people don't buy print anymore, it's all digital. Amazon being the biggest seller of such. I'm certain the "Rings of Power" books are on their way. "A must read for fantasy fans!".. They'll be easy reading action packed fantasy for the modern audience. The original books will not dissappear, but, they will fade away from the public consciousness and any potential new younger audience . Which will, over time, have the same effect. Those dusty old fantasy books, at the back of the library storeroom.

This vid deserves a million views. Bravo Drinker! Although Amazon are, as a corporation, operating in a manner akin to a totalitarian state, in terms of perception management and the demonisation of dissenters, I honestly think that the showrunners are so deluded that they believe their own propaganda. It's not even doublethink at this stage. They work within such an ideological bubble, and are so blind to their incompetence, that they can't conceive of criticism being anything other than "evil". They believe they are a force for good, and it's simply "us" and "them". The irony is that they've tried to "humanise" the orcs and give them some agency (rather than simply being an extension of an evil lord's will), and thereby introduced moral grey areas into a fantasy world which actually *does* operate in a more simplistic black and white way. It shows how little they understand the source material, and how unable they are to imagine a world different from our own.
