Drinker's Chasers - A Drunken Rant About Rings of Power
Ойын-сауық
So in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rings of Power showrunner JD Payne dismissed the "patently evil" fans for criticising his show. I had a few things to say about that, and I did.

It's sad that people legitimately ignore what's good for what they are familiar with. Same people still watch superhero movies. Same people don't wash their hands.
Drinker, your point here is PRECISELY what the story of Melkor is. Melkor saw something beautiful that someone else made that he could not and through jealousy and a desire to honor himself over and above the original creator, Melkor introduced "discordant tones" to the narrative of the creator. Indeed! The *whole point* of Lord of the Rings was to be *timeless* -not belonging to any mortal epoch or era. It was superidealistic when it was written; it is ethereal and mystical today, and it will be transcendent and halcyon in the distant future. For those empty-headed idiots who insist that it "change with the times," I quote this riddle from *The Hobbit* . "This thing all things devours. Birds, beasts, trees, and flowers. Gnaws iron; bites steel. Grinds hard stones into meal. Slays king; ruins town. And makes the mountains come crumbling down."

That's the absolute truth! Even the LOTR films, well-done though they are, fall far short of the perfection of the books, and it grieves me that in today's society many will never know the brilliance of the written works. They'll only have seen the movies; they won't know anything about Tom Bombadil, or how Samwise replanted the Shire... or how the Shire was so badly affected by that far-distant war that its inhabitants knew so little about. Oh crap, now I've depressed myself; this grieves me deeply.

Drinker makes the very good point, and not used enough, that Tolkien is simply superior to these writers. That's why we were alarmed when all we knew about the show is that they would 'adapt' it, 'modernize' it, etc. The idea of sheltered activists improving Tolkien's work, a linguist, writer and teacher who had more life experience that the entire writer's group combined, was absurd and has proven to be an inconciebable disaster (in a sense; in another sense, Amazon never cared about the quality so it's not that much of a failure).

It's as plain as the day is long that Tolkien had a very creative and charming mind which he could freely detach from the world he was living in. Especially if you watch interviews of him alive and see the kind of critics he had in his time you realize he lived in a time where it was considered far more silly to dwell on the type of fictions he was writing. He was fighting headlong against stigmas and played a big role in tearing those stigmas down to where we today can now take these fictional works so seriously and not be considered total losers for it; a benefit not only for fans but for the writers also who now vandalize his work.
@Grubnar

Tolkien spent years, YEARS! perfecting his work. Countless revisions, getting advice from his friends (some of whom were the best in their field in the entire world), and that is why it has withstood the test of time so well and been published all over the world. These hacks admitted they came up with this story in a single brainstorming session ... it is pretty much a "first draft". Explaining why the writing is so bad, and makes no sense.
An add appeared recently on KZread for Rings of Power that showed Elrond and some Dwarf riding a mine elevator. They were clearly meant to be at odds and the dwarf explained it was because Elrond didn't come to his wedding or visit after the birth of his kids. I was in shock that they turned Tolkien's work into Desperate Housewives. How embarrassing!!!

Amazon bought the rights to write their fanfic, nothing more, and then they spent a billion dollars to make it as horrible as possible. It's perfect. The name of Tolkien isn't tainted, because a fanfic can only taint its own writer, not the source it's based upon. And them spending money on ruining their own image is just pure blizz. "Galadriel says, in this work" has the same energy as Empress Theresa's author using Theresa's dialogue as a shield... If you know about Empress Theresa, you know.
That is perfect. Drinker hit the nail on the head so hard.
I was lucky enough when, as a child, many decades ago, the very first book anyone ever read to me was The Hobbit. It was absolutely riveting, and I have since read it, and re-read it, many times. It was also the first book I read to my children. I also read, and re-read, The Lord of the Rings. I even sent a close friend and colleague off to war with a copy of the latter, which he found totally absorbing, especially given the real-world events he was about to face, did face, and came back from. He also passed on the same enjoyment and wonder to his own children. Then along came Peter Jackson, whose Films were good, but they never captured the good v evil very well, so were a little soft and cartoon-like compared to the original text. A compromise that did dumb the material down to a considerable extent. One Hobbit, in particular, spent far too much time being very annoying, self-absorbed and over-sensitive, making three of the Films very hard to re-watch. That's a shame, because many other actors played their roles well. Then along came Amazon...I have nothing at all polite to say about that.
@deniswauchope3788

The LOTR films do fall far short of their source, but still were well-made; to be totally true to the source, those movies would have had to be over 10 hours long for each book. That's not possible, but at least P. Jackson was as close to the original as he could get (with some omissions/changes that still rankle me.) The Hobbit series I found unwatchable. He strayed too far from the source, he inserted people & events that weren't in the source, there was a whole lot of extra dialogue inserted for God-know-what reason. I watched the first two, then gave up on them; my blood pressure wouldn't allow me to continue, they infuriated me so!

I was never really grabbed by the films in the first place but omitting the scouring of the shire from the last one sealed the fate of the series for me. Thumbs down 👇
These writers are not even qualified to clean Tolkien's taint with their tongues, much less "adapt" Tolkien's work! (Adaption is something he made clear he NEVER wanted done! Much less by some global Mega-Corporation!) Also, I love how they define & spin the narrative of WHAT Tolkien was trying to do, in a way that SUPPORTS "their" point of view! Yes, OUR world is komplex and there are good people on both sides of a war. However in Tolkiens world it seems to be a bit more straight forward. When you have creatures that were created by corrupting elves with black magic and their master wants to dominate every living being on the planet, then it is pretty easy to decide who the good guys are. And that is one of the beatiful aspects of the genre: Fantasy doesn't have to mirror the real world

Not through hard work or respect but simply through flooding the public zeitgeist with the brand. Don't be surprised if in five years Tolkiens original books start getting printed with covers that reference rings of power, don't be surprised when anytime something relating to the jackson trilogy comes it it WILL be followed by discussions of RoP,, Think of the marvel characters that have been around for a decade now, the ones made for the sake of diversity hires or stand-ins for the original iconic characters, they're stories and books have always sold abysmally but the characters have endured and now, like it or not, are generally accepted by the normies, they have been cemented in pop culture alongside the ones they were meant to replace, I promise you amazon will do everything in its power to ensure RoP is never forgotten no matter how low it sinks, if only because, again it will be cemented in the zeitgeist.

They would need to feel some level of responsibility, or have it cross their mind at least once that the problem might be them for it to have any chance entering a dream, let alone give them a nightmare.
Drinker seems legitimately angry about that response. He is totally right to be. More just mentioning it because this is the first time I think I've seen Drinker more than just frustrated, annoyed and irritated about something that he inevitably mocks. This time he is straight up taking this idiot writer to task. Amazing to listen to. It is like the angry version of "When a quiet man speaks ....".
I love how Gary nods along, I almost expected a, "preach my brother." To cap off the clip.
Whoa! Sometimes when you are really pissed off, you become a Gatling Gun shooting truth bullets. That was brilliant CD

Gatling gun? This was more like the "more dakka" scene from Dredd, or the epic jungle fight from the original Predator movie. An unstoppable onslaught of truth coming on at 3000fps.

@@Raskolnikov70 True true and a good point, but I was trying to go for something old school, something raw and a bit classically sublime.
Well spoken!
This vid deserves a million views. Bravo Drinker! Although Amazon are, as a corporation, operating in a manner akin to a totalitarian state, in terms of perception management and the demonisation of dissenters, I honestly think that the showrunners are so deluded that they believe their own propaganda. It's not even doublethink at this stage. They work within such an ideological bubble, and are so blind to their incompetence, that they can't conceive of criticism being anything other than "evil". They believe they are a force for good, and it's simply "us" and "them". The irony is that they've tried to "humanise" the orcs and give them some agency (rather than simply being an extension of an evil lord's will), and thereby introduced moral grey areas into a fantasy world which actually *does* operate in a more simplistic black and white way. It shows how little they understand the source material, and how unable they are to imagine a world different from our own.
USA, USA, USA, USA,!!! Your rant got me all patriotic. I can’t help it. I feel like I’m fighting for a cause. Make Movies Great Again! (Just came up w MMGA, now embrace the movement)
LOL CD, they didn't even buy the right, they were handed the right by those who bought it!
You could hardly say the the Bakshi Lord of the Rings movies followed the source material to the letter, but those movies had heart and it was clear they we're trying their best to repesent Tolkien in the best way they could. Rings of power clearly, actively hates tolkien, hates LOTR fans and hates the cultures it was based on. ROP is a labour of hatred and apathy. Lazy. Stupid and all-around pathetic.
Took the words right out of my mouth. You are awesome Critical Drinker! Keep doing what you enjoy doing.
I've heard many drunken rants in my time. Given some too, sure, just tonight I must have given 3 and heard 10 (as far as I can remember). But this probably easily fits in the top 50 of most coherent, structured, meaningful and poignant drunken rants I've ever witnessed!
My favorite part was when Galadriel said "its morbin time" and morbed all over her enemies.
That's one of the most accurate rants I've heard this year.
🤣🤣🤣 There, literally, was a Rings of Power ad played after this video was done! The algorithm on this site is amazing!
And to quote an other line from Eru Drinkluvatar, sort of, "this was a man who fought in the f-ing battle of the Somme".
I didn't think there was a gay bone in my body until I heard the Drinker say this, and it aroused me more than I thought possible! Well said ya drunk bastard!
You have encapsulated it perfectly. No one can improve on what you just said. 👏👏👏
I can listen to you make sense all day drinker... it's like rainfall on the rooftop to my ears.
That few lines quoted is exactly like the Shankill Romans - 'Do evil so that good may come'. -Become a bit of a marching tune for the murder 'police' in Brit. [immediate siren & left temple neuralgic]
EXCELLENT SUMMATION OF THE ENTIRE SERIES!!! Perfectly sums up in a nutshell the whole entire reason I never had any interest in watching the show in the first place.
Love it when we critique things it's always "EEEEVIIIL!" as a response. They're basically childs in terms of maturity.
Beautifully put, and it applies to almost everything that's coming out from Hollywood right now. The sheer amount of work & properties that modern "creators" have pissed on is outrageous. I don't bother with it anymore. I atleast get a modicum of entertainment from watching people like the drinker shred these things apart.
I find it hilarious a RoP ad popped up before the vid started, and I skipped it after telling the KZread algorithm that this ad is "inappropriate".
YES! Greatest Drinker Moment EVER... Drinker Wins the Internet Today...
