Drilling in Deep Water - Shell’s New Vito Platform | With Kari Byron of MythBusters | Ep. 1

Ғылым және технология

Watch how extreme engineering is undertaken and completely reimagined with Kari Byron of MythBusters, as she explores drilling in deep water 5 miles below the Gulf of Mexico. Shell’s Vito platform build was packed with big ideas, resulting in a smaller offshore operating asset. Subscribe for more: go.shell.com/3j0t9x2
Discover the science and engineering behind Vito that makes it efficient: redefining how Shell captures the oil and gas that powers our lives. The first episode focuses on the team drilling in one of the deepest commercial oil fields ever discovered.

the issue is they also knew something even worse that no one could do anything about anyway. Industrial Agriculture was destroying the global Rhizosphere, and it happens to be the singular most important part of the Carbon Cycle. The very foundation of all terrestrial life. Bigoilyboi knew that they were making things worse, but they also knew that without cheap and immediate energy, the worst would get here centuries faster than it would otherwise. We could go back to 99% coal and still solve the problem if the emphasis was placed where it actually needs to be placed. On Industrial Agriculture. Carbon-12 is foundation of ALL life. The reason all the Carbon-12 is staying in the atmosphere is because we took billions of hectares of land that used to support a complete carbon recycling ecosystem, dug it up, gassed it into the atmosphere, and poison any living thing that attempts to return to that land that isn't a harvested crop. We took thousands of gigatons of carbon-12, threw it into the atmosphere, and destroyed one of the largest possible CO2 scrubbers that can possibly exist. No human technology could scale so large to replace it in less than 2 centuries of perfect development and construction with zero supply interruptions or conflict of any kind. They knew that reality was inescapable too. The only difference is, common knowledge still hasn't caught up to Scientific reality 50 years ago. People it turns out, are about 72% pureBred fukpotato per 100,000 sampled. So the vast majority will do whatever the herd does. And the herd just wants to eat, sleep, fight, and fk. As long as you provide that to a large group of people you can convince them to do literally anything. Even destroy the planet and all life on it to make 12 old men more money than any verifiably wealthy ruler in all of human history.

The concept of carbon neutral is a feel good con they run to trick idiots. If a production process facility produces 10 tons of carbon per year the facility can purchase 10 tons worth of carbon offset credits and be “carbon neutral”. Guess what else! Every plastic bottle you recycle is boated over to china in a shipping container on a giant diesel ship and your plastic bottles and everyone else’s are dumped in the ocean and the Chinese recycling company keeps your money. 😉

Shill for Shell! This is such a wonderful tagline. If it gets popular enough, she will have spent three years of her life in vain I "sold out" years ago when I started working for "the man". At least my former definition of "sold out". So I admit to moving my mortal goal posts. I'm in film and TV. We make vapid content that is contributing to the societal decay. So I know I'm a bit hypocritical. But by becoming the mascot, it seems like she really has sold herself to the devil.

The MythBusters team have collectively been scientific/intellectual heroes for almost an entire generation. I loved science. Many of my childhood friends didn't really care about science in the classroom. Until people like Kari were making it entertaining on MythBusters. The team fostered something beautiful for an entire country. I'm sorry that Kari finds herself in a situation that she needs to do this. We ALL know better. Shell has covered up climate change for 50 years. Many oil companies are responsible for the direction our climate is heading. But Shell might be one of it not THE most responsible entity for it, because they potently misled our governments. They pacified efforts to move away from oil, because it was harmful to Shell. Millions of people are going to die in the next 50 years because of how unstable the world is becoming, and Shell's only cause to pivot from its actions are that it got CAUGHT. They're literally still holding the trick in their bag in case it becomes potent again in the future. I'm sorry to be ashamed of Kari Byron right now. But reaching people and engendering a love for the pursuit of knowledge in children across the country and beyond for years, and this? I'm dismayed in a way that cuts almost as deep as finding out Robin WIlliams took his own life.
