Dragons are like humans, they come in all shapes and sizes, have widely varying characters, are at the top of the food chain and are their own biggest enemy.

I'm of the school of thought where if a fantasy author includes a dragon in their story, there had better be a damn good reason for it. Dealing with a dragon is like dealing with a personified force of nature that can turn against the characters and the civilizations they represent with the force of earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, meteor strikes, and plagues.

The reason why dragons are so popular is easy, because we call everything a dragon. no matter if it has parts from lions like the chinese ones, or is only a snake or have wings or can swim etc. the reason why we have that much different dragons is because there is no other creature where we say all this completley different looking creatures are the same thing. for example- you can have a horse, give him wings than you have a pegasus, mix it with a human then you have a centaur or mix it with a human and give him horns than you have a minotaur. or another easier example. a dead creature which still lives, could be a ghost, could be a zombie, could be a ghoul. nobody would have the idea to call all this different monsters with only one name. thats the reason why dragons are so popular because we call everything a dragon :)

@@hectorgonzalezpulido8683 I'm not 100% sure of the new official lore, haven't gotten my copy of the new book yet, but from what I've heard from promotional videos was what I previously stated. Just them being in an area causes regional effects, normal items being close to them turns the items magical, can give local creatures draconic features, etc. Also now dragons can become more or less demigods if they become old enough and due to the new lore of D&D being a multiverse, a dragon can merge with itself from another parallel universe to become stronger and reach a status of Great Wyrm. I'm sure there are tons of videos breaking it down already since some folks have already gotten their copy of the book early.

@@hectorgonzalezpulido8683 just picked it up, and read the first 25 pages or so. Looks like they are tying Dragon's magic and lore into the creation of the Prime Material planes. They have the power to impact what is around them. individuals, magic, items, and the land itself is changed by proximity to a Dragon. So far that's what I have gotten, sure ill find more as I dive further in!
Dragons are one of the best fantasy tropes and I love how they've been taken by each generation and made their own. Here are a few interesting dives into their lore I'd recommend: - Dragons as a representation of greed (and other mythological creatures as the epitome of human vices) - Dragon as beast vs. Dragon as intelligent creature - Dragons representing the forces of nature - Eastern vs. Western dragons (specifically the narrative roles each play) - Dragons as an exploration of unchallenged power
Fun fact : the word "dragon" comes from the old greek word "δράκων" (drákōn) derived from "δρακεῖv" (drakeîn) meaning "see clearly" maybe refering to the fact that reptile like snake doesn't have eyelids.

Favourite depiction of dragons is so hard! I absolutely adore dragons so I'm always excited when they pop up, but I'm definitely most intrigued when they aren't just vicious beasts to slay. I thought they were really interesting in the Symphony of Ages trilogy, and I loved Dragonriders of Pern growing up. The lore around them in the video game Final Fantasy 14: Heavensward is super fascinating. In it, dragons are immortal unless killed, and their power comes from their eyes. I won't get into spoilers, but the history between them and people of Ishgard, and the start of their thousand year war was incredible. Another that's more whimsical, but very close to my heart is actually from a middle-grade series called the Enchanted Forest Chronicles that I HIGHLY recommend, that takes place in a very meta kind of fairy tale world. The first book "Dealing with Dragons" is the most dragon-heavy, and it follows Princess Cimorene. She is a headstrong and 'improper' princess who decides to get out of an engagement to a boring prince by volunteering to be a dragon's princess. After all, being 'captured' by a dragon is a perfectly proper role for a princess XD It's a barrel of laughs and I can't recommend it more

Dragons are the poster trope for "Epic" tales. They make everything they are in automatically more interesting 🔥🐲
On the cultural exploration side of things, anthropologist David E Jones penned a book called An Instinct for Dragons that is very much worth exploring if you are into dragons and dragon mythology and their cultural diversity and similarities around the world. It’s not a huge book so you can push through it pretty quickly. Some of his conclusions have been called into question since.but I don’t think it takes away from his survey and analysis of the dragon mythology.
Penguin has ‘Penguin Classics’ that are anthology books of Dragons, Mermaids, the undead ext. I’ve only read the Mermaid one but it was really good. This video was great. They have a ‘Penguin Book of Vampires’ to.
My best friend and me started a literary broadcast project in Mexico, Crónicas D&D, focusing mostly on imaginative fiction (a genre obscenely pushed to the sidelines by the "worthwhile literary fiction" that, and I do not regret the word, plagues the Latin American literary landscape), and one of our first live lectures at the Centro Nacional de las Artes was about dragons and dinosaurs, from Tolkien's own lecture on the subject to myths, legends, and pop culture. The dragon is the prototypical fantastic creature, and such an amazing field of study as it is extremely versatile in its application and assimilation into other genres of fiction, be it a literal beast, a trope, or even a symbol. I loved your clear, concise look at fiction's most important (and fearsome) creature!
If you want a fantasy series with dragons, continue reading the Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb, there's not really any in the Farseer trilogy, but some of the later books feature dragons quite heavily, especially the Rainwild Chronicles.
There is a pterodactyl named after Quetzalcoatl that’s the biggest flying animal of all time. I don’t think it had anything to do with dragon myths but there you go

Quetzalcoatlus was Enormous with 33ft. wingspan, I think it's possible we have genetic race memories of their terror, along with other dinosaurs, that made dragons such an effective myth across the world. We don't even have to go back so many millions of years to have a need to be enemies with bigger snakes then we have today (and we were smaller), Phorusrhacids (aka terror birds) and the Aborigines who first arrived in Australia may well have had to combat Megalania - like a Komodo Dragon but up to 23 feet and 4,000 lbs!

Naomi Novik's Temeraire series actually shows off those cultural differences in dragons based around regions like China, Japan, Chili, and Russia. The characters travel all over the world and discover the different cultures and how they interact with their dragons.
Hey Merphy, I have been studying ancient near eastern culture and literature for a few years now to deepen my understanding of biblical material and naturally, I’ve researched the dragon motif myself since it was so essential to the world views of those ancient cultures. You did a good job here in this video and it was very refreshing to see. Thank you!
In Tiger’s Voyage by Colleen Houck, third in the Tiger’s Curse saga (one of my favorite series ☺️) the main characters meet four different dragons, and each one is reminiscent of a dragon from a different culture. It was really really cool to see, and really fun for our main characters to interact with each one and their very different personalities!

Don't know how I missed this video, but it's one of my favorites. Robin Hobb's work, in particular the Liveship Traders, has some great dragon lore.
As a kid, I read every single book that had a dragon in the title/cover. Dragonlance, Dragonling, Dragon Blood, Hobbit, etc. I was obsessed and I was constantly with my books and drawing them, and this also coincides with Pokemon so I had Dragonite and Charizard stuff too. This is pretty typical kid stuff, but what was funny was my super religious school I went to, called my mom and said, "We think your son is possessed. Dragons are the beast of the devil, and he seems enthralled by them." My mom kindly told them to F off, but this then spawned a thing where my family kept getting me dragon related gifts and knick knacks. Well I'm an adult and now my place is filled with Dragons, and I couldn't be happier.

This is such an awesome video. So fascinating and it's kind of funny that one of the leaders of the groups of people in my novel series wears the title of Dragon. They are just a human but they have to pass a bunch of tests to be worthy of leading. Like They have to brave the heat of their volcano home, be strong of spirit, they have to walk across coals, they even have to carry someone out of a maze of tunnels. Of course once that series is done i've got some worlds with actual dragons i want to play around in, looking forward to that but until then the Dragon of the Hautrochs tribe is my main plaything

So many good series being mentioned in the comments. Beyond those, I highly recommend A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan. Gels with the scientific/cultural discussion we have here!
Loved this deep dive into dragons! They're by far my favorite fantasy creature and I'll basically read any fantasy with them (currently obsessing over the Lady Trent series). I really, really hope the third theory about dragons actually existing at one point has an element of truth.
Loved this video, dragons are my favorite mythological creature! And, as a Brazilian, I never thought about the Boitata myth as it being a dragon, and in schools we usually hear that is a large snake. But the way you explained it, it makes sense that it can be classified as a dragon! And YES! We need more stories where the dragon is not just an enemy to slain!
In carinthia (a county in Austria) there is the tale of the "Lindwurm" which is basically a worm creature with wings that only leaves its cave when it is foggy and eats the sheep and goats and one day the duke is like: okay so whoever slays this monster will get a whole lot of money. So a few servants are like: yap sure, why not. And they go and trick the Lindwurm into eating a hook and then kill it. And where they killed it there is a fountain today, the "Lindwurmbrunnen" in the capital of carinthia. So it doesn´t end well for the Lindwurm but it is a typical dragon story
When she said "we need more dragon where the main character properly interact with them". I immediately thought of Kubayashi Dragon Maid manga
I am a big dragon fan. Thanks for all the resources!
I've never read How To Train Your Dragon, but as a kid, I watched the show, and I still absolutely adore the dragons there! I also love some of the Digimon dragons (Wargreymon, Holydramon, Megidramon, Shinegreymon, Samudramon, Ouryumon, Bulucomon just to name a few). Also, as a Romanian (aka a qualified vampire), I am very excited for the vampire video
I find interesting what you mention about how pervasive is the myth of the dragons all across the world, with cultures that probably weren't in contact with each other and I agree with you that it might have been due people finding dinosaur fossils and using them as inspiration for the concept. I also agree with the sentiment that more dragons are needed in fantasy as actual characters. That's why I wrote a short story where one of the MC is a dragon trading barbs and helping the other MC to fulfill their quest. And another where there is a shapeshifting dragon playing a long con... and I won't say more spoilers. :P

I love dragons, thanks for this video! 😀
'Dragon Heart 1&2' has my favorite version of the trope. Semi-mystical, hero's story, with realistic elements. I've been playing around with dragon myths since I was a kid. Now, most of the stories I write have some embodiment of dragons. Small ones that feed off pollen, big ones that guard ancient knowledge, old ones that shaped the galaxy and are actively secrets.
First book I read with a Dragon in it was "Jeremy Thatcher Dragon Hatcher." I related to the main character since I was an artist, but of a loner, and was often lost in my own head. I always pictured his parents as Dean Cane and Teri Hatcher, because Lois and Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman was a thing at the time. I was a weird kid.
Terry Pratchett had a funny parody of Quetzalcoatl saying that he was, "“half man, half chicken, half jaguar, half serpent, half scorpion, and half mad.” I read through all of the comments and unless I missed someone, nobody suggested that you should read Dragon and Thief by Timothy Zahn, but it's a good one! (although the "dragons" in it aren't quite what you would traditionally think of as dragons) Also if I'm remembering correctly Shatterglass by Tamora Pierce has a tiny dragon in it, although I don't think it plays a large part in the story. However before reading that book you would at least need to read Tris's Book by Tamora Pierce.
I love that you’re doing vampires next! I love the lore of the Wendigo. And there are a ton in Southeast Asia. In the Philippines alone, there are 4 different myths about vanpires/ghoul-like creatures: the manananggal, the aswang, the tiktik, and the wakwak.
Eyy~ Bakunawa made it to the video. 😎 But also, I don't know if you'll see this comment but there's anime adaptation on Netflix called DOTA: Dragon's Blood and I feel like you'll appreciate the lore in it, from season 1 to season 2. It's got pacing issues, and I don't know if you feel like watching anime, but the characters are lovable and there are important dragons in the story~
If you want more dragon content, you should check out the Age of Fire series by E.E. Knight because it is literally a series from the perspective of dragons and where they are the main characters.
I just love dragons. Thank you so much for the video! Also, I completely agree with you, we need more dragon fantasy, where it's not just about slaying the evil dragon. I always enjoyed the more friendly versions the most, one of my favorite books growing up was Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke (a classic here in Germany), and later on I loved the films of How to train your Dragons.

I've read Dragon Rider!
How to train your Dragon was such a huge part of my childhood. That film with its animation, the story and one of the best film scores in the history of cinema, inspired me so much I went and drew my own dragon breeds and from there made my own stories. I wanted to be a dragon rider so bad. When recess came around at school I went straight to the swing set to go as high as I could. It was the best feeling ever. If your son has never seen that movie get him to watch it. If you haven't seen it Merph watch it, I think you would really enjoy it.
This comes out on the same day as Fizban's Treasury of Dragons. A double dose of my favorite fantasy creature!
The way I adapted dragons in my Tyrus Bloodcoat series was to have them be hyper territorial, so much so that should two dragons of the same sex encounter each other they will fight to the death. This helps explain why there aren't dragons everywhere in the series. I also made them a bit petty in that when they feel they are losing they will suicide attack their opponent, which I used to explain certain historical natural disasters, like Pompeii.
My all time favourite dragon series is Temeraire by Naomi Novik and it's really sad how underappreciated these books are! The story is often told from the viewpoint of the dragons, they are amazing, fierce, intelligent and loyal. And the author has incredibly deep knowledge about history, social norms, animal behaviour and even dress history! I'm continually amazed by these books and I wish more people knew about them!

I look forward on your take on Fire and Blood, both the show and the book. If you have the chance read the Ice Dragon, it's an easy read.
I am forever enamoured by dragons. I love the way they are folded into stories as beasts of rage and fire as well as nobility and wisdom. I always find a way to introduce them into my D&D games and have the characters talk with them rather than just fight them for loot. My favourite dragon is Smaug - love the way he is introduced in the book and the conversation he has with Bilbo.
Great Video!!!
You like Dragons? Then you should check Naomi Novik's Temeraire-series. It is Napoleonic Wars but with DRAGONS. They are intelligent western 6-limbed types but there is a lot of variation between breeds. It is quite good alt-history series, lot of 3d characters and interesting aerial tactics. Instead of dragon rider = knight and horse, each dragon is more like a WW2 bomber with multiple crew member strapping on the dragon, shooting muskets and dropping bombs, and occasionally jumping on enemy dragons mid-flight to board them. Series namesake Temaraire is my favorite dragon in fiction. I hope you can find time to read even the first book.
Those ingrained evolutionary survival traits (i.e. fear of snakes/spiders/heights) are fascinating, especially the connection between those and seemingly innocuous cultural practices, such as the use of mobiles over infants cribs!
Never expected to see Boitatá in a video about Dragons :D
Great video, do you have any on your channel talking about western/fantasy? If not, I'd love to see a video on that!
I very much like the dragons that are people. Kind or vicious doesn't really matter, either one is fun. But I want my dragons to be thinking creatures, not animals.
It'd be interesting to know which have been your favorite dragons in literature. Any chance that video is coming?
One of the possibilities that you didn't mention is that dragons could be one of our earliest stories. As an animal we are story-tellers, and so back before we migrated out of Africa and across the world in the earliest days of humanity there might have been a story we told about massive beasts (maybe to warn others about snakes and lions and other predators). The myth being from the oldest human tribes who then carried out across the world and the story evolved and changed as each culture separated and it took on a life of its own.
It's possible that the origin is a combo of a fear of snakes and dinosaurs but from a fear of dinosaurs themselves leftover from before we even evolved from humans which would explain their huge size across almost all cultures. It's so interesting to think about
Did you read "Burn" by Patrick Ness? I loved that concept... Dragons in the modern world.
