    There are differences between Dragons and Wyverns and Drakes and Hydras and so on and on, but here I'm talking about what the normal cinematic audience would consider a dragon. The distinction isn't at all often noted in films, and most simply consider all of these creatures to be dragons.

    /X/EN Oh, but that's not an unpopular opinion. In fact, that's an opinion shared by the majority and is born from ignorance or the butthurt feelings of a person who found out their favorite media's dragon was actually a wyvern.

  • @Blokewood3

    About the whole "wyvern vs dragon" debate, think of it this way: "Dragon" refers to the category in general. In heraldry, dragons are differentiated by basic body type: A dragon with 4 legs and 2 wings is just called a dragon, because in English it doesn't have a more specific name. A dragon with 4 legs but no wings is sometimes called a drake. A dragon with 2 legs and 2 wings is called a wyvern. A dragon with 2 legs and no wings is called a lindorm. A dragon with no legs but 2 wings is called an amphitere A dragon with no legs or wings is called a guivre, or orm. To medieval people, all of these monsters would have been considered different types of dragons. In our own world there are kinds of lizards with 4, 2, or no legs, and they are still lizards. Obviously, a fantasy writer can choose how they want dragons to be in their stories, but mythologically speaking, wyverns are dragons.

    Blokewood3 eh, they wouldn't even call them dragons at all, because dragon was a modern thing MADE by heraldry, not by other cultures of old, and drakes are always the wings less dragon like creatures. People in Europe like to use that to tell the difference between the dragon like creatures, if anything, why not call them dracos, or dranoids, or dragon-like?

    I like to call the 2-winged, 4-legged dragons "true dragons" whilst the other variations are "dragonkin". It suggests a relation to dragons but also puts true dragons at the top of the hierarchy.

  • @Saba_Ora

    @Saba_Ora

    Least you know enough to differentiate them, but I disagree from then on. We are no longer medieval people and we can tell the difference. They may all be of the same species or category or whatever but they all have different names and distinctions because of those names. A wyvern is not a dragon and most modern "dragons" are wyverns, it's just "dragon" sounds cooler I guess. We should either call them what they are or the artists can model in two more legs.

  • @matthiuskoenig3378

    actually you are wrong, saba ora, the definition of wyvern is ''wyvern ˈwʌɪv(ə)n/Submit nounHERALDRY a winged two-legged dragon with a barbed tail.'' thus even modern definitions it is a dragon type, not independant. in fact ''The usual spelling wyvern is not attested before the seventeenth century as "winged two-footed dragon".[1] It is an alteration of Middle English (attested thirteenth century) wyver, from Old French wivre (cf. French guivre and vouivre), itself from Latin vīpera, meaning "viper", "adder", or "asp".[1][2]'' thus no one in medevil times called anything a wyvern. and infact there seems to be no disticiton between them in non-english european countries. the distiction only happened , the 1st depcition of what we wuld call a wyvern is beleived to be a roman symbol of the draco standard (the romans thus called wyverns dragons, and since they did not have 4 leged 2 winged dragons...)

  • @Saba_Ora

    @Saba_Ora

    You can copy a definition that makes you right, I can copy a definition that makes me right. Observe: A wyvern (/ˈwaɪvərn/ WY-vərn, sometimes spelled wivern) is a legendary creature with a dragon's head and wings, a reptilian body, two legs, and a tail often ending in a diamond- or arrow-shaped tip. A sea-dwelling variant dubbed the sea-wyvern has a fish tail in place of a barbed dragon's tail. The wyvern in heraldry and folklore is rarely fire-breathing like the four-legged dragon. Since the sixteenth century, in English, Scottish, and Irish heraldry, the key difference has been that a wyvern has two legs, whereas a dragon has four. Point is it's not the middle ages anymore, just call the damn things Wyverns or give them 4 legs, all I'm saying.

    I think it comes down to the design. You you're able to create a distinct design for your dragon, you make it memorable. Drogon an Yu-Gi-Oh dragons, although they're not even real dragons, are pretty memorable. Also, if the dragon doesn't breath fire, but other kind of attack the dragon keeps himself apart from the others, like Blue Eyes White Dragon.

    I think what really helps is a proper understanding of the mythic and cultural roots of the dragon. Everyone knows what a dragon is, from childhood or pop-culture, but I don't think as many people have a full familiarity with the many profound concepts that they may represent and symbolize in folklore, mythology, religion, culture, and art across the world.

    Though personally I think that Gollum was every bit as good as Smaug. And to be honest, when compared side by side The Hobbit Movies were good movies that do stand up along side The Lord of The Rings. The only part that feels rushed to me is the final battle and that's it. The The Hobbit movies did a good job of translating the lighter more whimsical feel of the book to the big screen.

  • @Funinightmare

    The fault of the Hobbit movies is more so on Warner Brothers and harassing PJ with deadlines that ruined it especially Battle of the five armies. You might have thought that the beginning of the film with Smaug was the best part and in a way it is as it the only CGI moment that is well done whilst the battle itself is a complete mess of graphics. Peter Jackson and his crew barely had enough time to film real scenes for the last because originally the Hobbit was supposed to be two films not three plus unlike with Lord of the Rings PJ was not given a plan first which is how he works best, it's why LOTR is such a good film series at all it was the pre production the planning that made it possible. You are right that Smaug got most of the budget but that wasn't what ruined the series.

    What Reign of Fire had down perfectly, that no other dragon film has are the wing flaps. They look right. Also, the idea that the fire is produced by two separate glandular excretions in the mouth chemically reacting to oxygen is something that seems to have gotten set in stone. Those glandular features even appear in Game of Thrones. A nice realistic touch, that.

    Smaug kicked ass. I went to see that films in IMAX 3D. When Smaug first emerged from the pile of gold and stared Bilbo(read the audience) down, I literally had knots in my stomach as I was subconsciously getting ready to fight for my life. Even though I knew he was fake and was logically unafraid, Smaug’s presence was so overwhelming that watching that film actually elicited a visceral fear response. Had the film been 4D I am sure that there would have been people shitting themselves in the theater. Best horror movie monster experience I’ve had to date... in a pg13 fantasy action adventure movie! Shelob was pretty scary as well. The dragon slayer was great, too. Along with the ring of fire. You have good taste in dragon!

    This helped me quantify WHY I like GOT's dragons so much. They look great but moreover they FEEL huge, their wingbeats are deliberate and powerful, their firebreathing isn't so much shooting fire as it is a shockwave of torrential flame that annihilates things it comes in contact with. I do think the Nazgul's flying mounts are good too, mostly because of the size and weight of the wing beats. They aren't that large but that aspect of them really sold it.

    It's not film, but anyone who wants a masterclass in how to give a dragon personality should take a look at the animation work done for the Monster Hunter series of video games. Specifically the Rathalos and Rathian winged wyverns, as well as elder dragons such as Kushala Deora, Fatalis, and Vaal Ha'zak.

    Dragons exist in all places and cultures. They combine all the features of the most dangerous predators of men into a single, lethal creature. The sinuous and scaled body of a snake, the lithe and powerful limbs of a great cat, the flight and mighty talons of a bird of prey, and of course, an enemy that cannot be fought, fire. Combine it together this way in your mind, and you can picture how a dragon would really be.

It was only a clip, not the whole movie, and it was in black and white, and as a child I thought it was from a documentary. It scared and thrilled me to think that that creature was out there somewhere. Fortunately for me, that movie actually holds up, discovered and seen again 3 decades later. I didn't recapture that same thrill of childhood wonderment, but I recognized the clip, and the movie itself was worth my time.

    What really sold Reign of Fire for me was how perfectly they captured the power of their dragons. The build-up, the dread, the reveal, the design and animation, the sense of weight, speed, and the heat of their flames, and the devastation they leave behind - it really makes the whole movie, IMO. I find myself thoroughly invested in the world of Reign of Fire (and to a lesser extent, Bale's character), even when the dragons themselves are nowhere to be found. This is a world ruled by ancient beasts, where the kings rain fire down from the sky and terror drives the human race towards extinction. Every frame is a reminder of that. If someone could make a thrilling survival RPG with a similar premise and setting, I'd play the hell out of it.

    Now y'see if you go back to old bestiaries and stories its not so clear cut: the distinctions tend to be in modern things. Many old heraldic images of what they called serpents and dragons we would refer to as wyverns (see a variety of British heraldic dragons, such as those for Wessex and the pre-Norman kingdom of England). And again in bestiaries and stories you often have many diverse creatures (eg basilisk, cockatrice, pythons, wyrms, sea serpents) all referred to as types of serpents in the dragon sense (supernatural/magical, reptilian, breathes poison/fire, aggressive, predatory, etc) or strait up as dragons. But its distinctions in the end according to all the old sources rather than entirely separate things such as the Russian dragons with many many heads and legs or Chinese Lung dragons with no wings and antlers. If you want to focus son the distinctions and refer to the different types by their own terms that's cool, that's what's typically done with them now, but I just feel the need to pedantically butt in when that happens xD

    Reign of Fire is among my favourite films, and its depiction of the dragon was incredibly well done. The film sold me on a world in fear of these mighty creatures - which had such presence, and elicit great fear among the remaining populace. To my knowledge it's the only film that's explored a more realistic depiction of the creature (that is to say, what would happen if dragons emerged to wreak havoc on modern day earth). I don't think the film aimed to create fully fleshed out -developed - characters; but to sell us on a world living in fear, and how they respond to the threat. It's the circumstance that draws you in (how horrifying it must be to exist in such a world). Love the film. Also loved Dragon Heart, and Smaug was hypnotic (and THE best thing about the Hobbit movies).

I think by far the scariest part about Smaug though is his intelligence, as much as I wouldn't say he's incredibly intelligent, he is still easily able to outwit most normal people, another thing that adds to him is incase you didn't know (Not 100% sure on this so don't cite me) they needed to rent a super computer, to render each and every individual scale on his body, that's like rendering every hair on a person's head
