To answer your question about why healing is seen as bad. It's not being a healer that's bad. It's that female characters are often regulated to that role, with few men maybe filling them, while very few females get to do battle, if they even ever do, but mostly men fight. There are clever ways to tackle that sort of level of sexism, like what we see in Avatar the Last Airbender where the female water tribe members in the North were regulated to being healers because of a sexist belief they had, and Katara challenged that by "disrespecting Master Paku's culture, beliefs and himself", but he later acknowledged the potential in women as fighters. Same with Sokka, as he was a product of that same belief. My point is that if something like that was a part of the culture in the Naruto-verse, it would've made some more sense. It actually could've been a strong motivator for many if not all the female characters to push beyond the limits society places on them. That's one way I see that "female = healer" could've been "fixed" in any story. Another way would've been to just write female characters better.

Yeah this kinda was my gateway to One Piece. I watched it every day before school when I was a little kid and thought it was pretty cool but nothing special. All I remembered about it was the theme song but otherwise thought nothing of it. Then years later in my senior year of high school some friends of mine asked If I "watched/ read One Piece?" And I said "Oh yeah, I remember watching that show, it had a catchy theme song but that's all I remember" and they were like "Dude, don't tell me you watched the 4kids dub..." to which I said "now that you mention it, that's probably not how the original is huh?" And then I spent like 4 months watching the then 450 or so episodes that were available and got fully caught up and re-educated to what One Piece ACTUALLY was and how amazing it is! Simply put: The 4kids dub was so dumbed down that it barely stayed in my mind and felt like nothing special and if it wasn't for my friends properly showing me One Piece; to this day I might have still thought of it as just a dumb, simple kids show.

my most loved fantasy series is by a lesser known author, shes clearly not as good as the top writers and i dont like some of the things shes put into the books. for example there a lot of the main character wanting to have S** witch i try to gloss over because its kind of annoying at this point. but other then that the story and the world is amazing, i cant stop reading it. i actually only found it on a ad on my kindle.

Honestly i think Sakuras biggest problem is the same as Narutos biggest problem, they are both both madly in love with and hyper fixated on Sasuke as a huge part of their character, but as the main character Naruto gets to do enough outside of pining for sasuke that it creates a bigger drag on sakuras character then narutos

I think the reason why people object to the women "always" being healers is because we live in a world where the roles of women were arbitrarily restricted in ways they weren't for men because of gendered prejudice that even international crisis' couldn't push aside. It didn't matter if a woman had all the skills needed to fight well, a man with no skills or aptitude would still be accepted and she would not. So it's not that no one appreciates healers but it's that we kind of know women tend to end up there because of the assumptions that women are best suited to support men and combat is no place for a lady. (Yes I know Naruto has female combatants and leaders, and I love that, but we don't live in that world. We live in this one so our responses to media are drawn from our own experiences and older media we have consumed.)

Two points: 1. Regarding motherhood, many people see motherhood as a bother or distraction or whatever largely due to the strong anti-family sentiment in modern culture. Family is viewed by many as an impediment to the "more important" work. This view is backwards. Every other bit of work done is to support families in order to raise the next generation. Without that, we cease to be. 2. Regarding supportive roles in battle/war. I've heard it said that logistics wins wars. Which means that supportive roles are easily just as important as the fighter roles. They are just less celebrated. I think this notion comes from a very shonen reader/watcher view of just wanting to see good guy punch bad guy. Which is a shame, because most shonen offer a deeper story beyond mere fights.

16:50 I think this narrative choice of Sakura marrying the guy who abused her by outright trying to murder her is a huge part of that perception of poorly written women characters in Naruto. Perceptions of shows/movies/games/plays/etc. are more often than not heavily influenced by the finale section of that content. It makes it *feel* like Sakura's growth out of her position in the earlier part of the story is for naught, even though that's not really true. It also doesn't help that we never see Sakura and Sasuke have any conversations after the end of the war that show how they reconciled with his murder attempt and what the basis of her newfound trust is in him, given that despite helping Naruto, Sakura, Obito, and Kakashi defeat and imprison Kaguya, Sasuke immediately turns on them and has to be beaten into sense by Naruto before the Infinite Tsukuyomi can be deactivated.

I do find it funny for the same fandom that seems to think "Naruto was supposed to represent hard work BEATING talent, and then for some reason it became all about destiny and bloodlines later on" they also consistently shit on Sakura specifically who rises to the occasion more often than not as that hard worker in Shippuden XD you made some very good points here tho, Merphy. Can't wait for the big final review (and hopefully Bleach on the horizon, I think you'd like it alot <3 )

I think part of Sakura's character arc should have been about getting over her crush on Sasuke. There was even the perfect set up for it when she cut her hair during the Chunnin Exams. Remember that the only reason she grew out her hair is because of that rumor that Sasuke liked girls with long hair. Sakura's long hair was a symbol of her infatuation with Sasuke. Then it became a hindrance to her on the battlefield and she had to cut it to get away from an enemy. Because the long hair symbolizes her crush on Sasuke, the cutting of her hair should have symbolized the end of that crush. I wish Kishimoto had shown her going through the process of realizing she only had the long hair because of an old childhood rumor and that the long hair was actually hurting her skills as a ninja. Then she coulld have gone through the process of realizing her infatuation was also a hindrance to herself and the team and then she could have grown from that.

But I love these women and this series. I loved how you explained it. Healers are essential! I suggest you watch Naruto: The Last movie (90 mins) since it's a way better love story for our main pairing of Hinata and Naruto.

If someone has issues with tsunade, they are just wrong. and about the medical ninja. you are correct. it is a very important role that should be valued. from among the named characters, how many men do it? and how many women? also, the medical ninja cannot fight. otherwise, if the healer gets hurt, who heals? tsunade makes an exception for herself because of her special healing jutsu that can heal herself. (same applies to sakura when she gets the thing on her forehead). so yes, the medical ninja are awesome, but they aren't allowed to shine much in battle. (sakura saving kankuro and later on keeping naruto alive by literaly pumping his heart with her own hand was cool, but also can't think of another medical scene like them. healing is more of a background thing) and about the mother thing, I think it's less about kushina and more like how it just keeps being the thing the women get stuck with when their important scenes end. and the scenes end fast... like, kurenai is a jounin. she should be absolutely badass. She tried to fight itachi and lost (like most people, so not complaining here), but she went for it without hesitation. that is cool. what else did she do? watered some plants... had asuma's kid... watered more plants... that is all. and it's not like she didn't have a chance to do stuff. she could have fought pain during the invasion. she could have been in the war and be the one to fight asuma instead of team 10 saying their goodbyes AGAIN. She is a mother, but she is also a soldier. and that was a war to save the world why is she not there?!? and to be clear. I like kushina and how she ends up. she being happy as a mom just worked for her. still pissed sakura ended with sasuke... and most of the official pairings honestly...

Sorry but Naruto women are poorly written. Sakura's entire character is pining over Sasuke, become a second Tsunade, show off her skills in one arc, fade into the background, hilariously try to take down Sasuke, hilariously try to fight in the war, and get one good hit in against Kaguya. And if you think thats a lot, she's the most "developed" female character Hinata's entire existence is "Naruto Kun", trying to save Naruto valiantly against Pain, confessing her love and getting defeated and then goes back to being utterly nothing until the movie. In the war she's there and her best achievement is unlocking a Hyuga move Neji did as an academy graduate. And both of them are housewives past Naruto.

The strength of Naruto women was never in doubt for me, but what bothers me is that they are never shown as having dreams or goals of their own that do not revolve around the men in their life. Like they don't exist without them. Even those who had some "independent drive" at the begining, like Kushina or Temari, lose it soon enough the moment they come across a guy. I remember when George RR Martin was once asked how is it that he writes such compelling female characters and he answered "I tend to think of women as people". That makes me wonder what concept of women Kishimoto has.

Personally, Hinata was the biggest disappointment for me. She actually seemed very interesting in Part 1 but as the story went on, parts of her character felt like it was being stripped away in favor of pushing her love for her precious Naruto-kun into the spotlight. This is very evident in the Last Naruto the movie where her main priority wad making sure the scarf she was knitting for Naruto was safe and secured, not Hanabi getting KIDNAPPED by some weird alien dude. She didn't even really do much in that movie either other than getting damsel in distressed so she can get saved by Naruto. Like I get it, she's the love interest, but at the same time, it would've been cool to see her do something with Hanabi and developed her relationship with Neji more, trying to solve the issues with the Hyuga Clan at the time together. Would've been cool to see her basically act like the Itachi to Hanabi's Sasuke because when you really think about it, she's basically similar to Itachi in terms of backstory, minus the coup de tat part.

I really dislike naruto's fixation on sasuke, especially after their meeting right after he killed danzo. Sasuke made a CHOICE and naruto acts like sasuke was deceived or kidnapped. The fact is that naruto was willing to put his entire village and all of his friends in danger because he couldn't let go of sasuke.

It's not necessarily because they're poorly written (which they kinda are) it's imo that many have tons of wasted potential Ino and Ten Ten immediately come to mind but there are others, it's not that they need to beat up everyone it's that they imo, have better potential and cooler abilities than guys in their teams but then they're relegated to background characters.

And in her place at her age, I would have cried in despair. But she didn't gave up. She went to tsunade and studied Super hard to become a great kunoichi. That really impressed me as a little girl.

First of all I should point out that I have not delved into the cosmere, but I sure want to try it for myself. You can't be that popular and loved if you are not doing something right. Seems a bit intimidating, seeing it is already so vast and ever expanding that i have avoided it up to now. (It's been less than a year since i started reading regularly) The point about the characters feeling one dimentional when struggling through something seems redundunt to me tbh. Just like you said, when depression or grief or anxiety etc hits you, you are devoured by it. It might be boring to read, I don't know yet, but when it does hit you irl, you also feel one-dimentional, like, this is me apparently and this is how everyone sees me. Cause it does affect your thinking, your reactions, everything. It does't mean it is permanent though. The pattern thing depends on each book or series I think. I'm kinda binge reading dresden (this was what triggered me into reading, just finished White Night) and the are patterns that are super predictable, first chapters we will have descriptions of stuff we've read everytime, the subplot and the main will tie in together at the end, etc. And beacause of reading them one after the other, it did slow me down (but i won't elaborate on it on this already loooong comment.) But if when you fiinish the book you are content it doesn't really matter. It was just a drag at some point. Which is , in my experience, similar to diving into a new world, you are a bit disoriented for a while til you come to understand some stuff. As for his magic systems, it sounds like typical shonen style to me, understandable enough even at the beginning and with limitations, which does tend to grip you right away. Nice video as usual Merphy, thank you :D

Yes but Naruto and Sasuke has stuff that wasn't about impressing a girl and Sakura was barely allowed out of their shadow. It was either about matching the boys for strength or dating Sasuke. They're all the same age but her material was weaker. It wasn't just that she did dumb shit.
