In my senior lit class in high school, we read a poem about someone diving into the ocean. And one part described two mermaids circling a sunken ship. During discussion I'd compared them to sharks because it felt very predatory, and my teacher basically said I was wrong because mermaids were very peaceful creatures. And I was like...No? Mermaids are terrifying and KILL PEOPLE? I'm still not over that and it's been years. 😐

And right below that, in Argentina (though less spread, and usually only known in their respective cultures) we have Wajatneol, a merman known by the Wichí as "the owner of the fish", and Mbói wuju, a half-snake, half-woman water-dweller that makes men fall in love with her and drown them, for the Chiriguanos

Wow. A story with the set-up of someone getting a merperson's soul object and then the fallout sounds so interesting. Like, there's already enemies-to-lovers embedded in it, but you could also make it a horror, adventure (It was lost and I don't want to be stuck with a merperson or the curse gotta find it [which could lead to friendship or whatever]), or other things. To quote Merphy, "Someone write that book." ...I might write something with that setup.

With selkies I believe it is their animal skin they can take off if I'm remembering it correctly and not getting them mixed up with something else.

I wonder if this was some kind of inspiration for the Riselka creature in Tigana, by Gui Gavriel . Not exactly a mermaid or Siren, but a bit of both (it was my feeling anyway): One man sees a riselka: his life forks there.  Two men see a riselka: one of them shall die.  Three men see a riselka: one is blessed, one forks, one shall die. One woman sees a riselka: her path comes clear to her.  Two women see a riselka: one of them shall bear a child.  Three women see a riselka: one is blessed, one is clear, one shall bear a child. "A Little Sacrifice" is my favorite of the short stories, it's so good! I love what it did for the characters + it's a retelling of The Little Mermaid with Sapkowski's signature humor, what more could one ask for. There is only one word for both in Spanish: Sirena, so without context (or descriptions) you can't tell them appart. I didn't kkow why, but I guess it makes sense given you said both myths became intertwined. And that very interesting, shows how language evolves with the myths of the past. It seems the same happens in French and other languages. Fascinating. If this is a common that thing happens in most of the languages, maybe the myths intertwined each other because people used the same word for both, and that end up translating to english confusion even if there is 2 words in that lenguage.

One of the reasons why I have a hard time differentiate sirens and mermaids: Mermaid in french = Sirène Siren = Sirène (of course) The distinction doesn't exist in french. We can try with "créature mi-femme mi-poisson" (half woman walf fish creature) but everybody will thing "Sirène"

  • @Lysis99

@@ChristmasLore I don't remember all of Odyssey, and I don't remember if Homer put a description of the Sirène. If not, I know when I've read that part, I thought "fish women", thanks to Disney. The power of language is precisely in words. They have the power to create images. It's not just with creatures and folklore, if my language doesn't have a word for a concepts another language dors, it's harder for me to understand that concept. (Exemple, There is a lot of concept in Japanese that I can hardly understand) more diverse the language is, most powerful it is. That the main key I remember from the book 1984 🤣

I dunno if youve come across them in your researching adventures, but they kind of appear like a combination of man with fish characteristics. Theyre also often shown alongside the “Sirena” (Filipino version of the mermaid) in modern Filipino media. I remember watching a show with both of them as a kid and thought I’d share.

I guess it makes sense that people would mix up sirens and mermaids, because "sing ships onto the rocks" sounds like it SHOULD be an aquatic creature thing. I mean, you can obviously have bird things roosting on the rocks, but it probably isn't what you'd assume. Also, I heard recently that Hans Christian Anderson wrote "the Little Mermaid" to a man who didn't love him back (as in, he sent it as wedding present). I haven't been able to confirm that yet, but there certainly are strong indications that Anderson was bi (and unlucky in love all around). If it is true and you remember how that original story ends...dang.

One of my favourite books is "It came from the Deep" by Maria Lewis. She is amazing and it is a great Mereman book.

I absolutely loved this video. I feel like I am ready to fall down this rabbit hole and do a bit of research myself. And I would like to watch a series of decoding the origins of mythological creatures.

Yes, Merphy I would love to hear you give talks on mythological creatures. Also as for the confusion between mermaids and sirens, I blame the french. French has only one word to describe both "siren"

Not just applicable mermaids, but demi-human creatures are almost always cooler when the creatures are absolute assholes. Fairys/Faeries are my personal favourite example of that. I love stories where fairies are tricksters and pranksters who basically kill or ruin peoples lives for no reason other than for entertainment.

Bring. It. On. 🦄 I would love a series! It’s fun to see your excitement. Now I need to research mermaids. 🤓 Mostly when I really think about it much of our world is still a mystery. They could be out there. 🧜‍♀️

Yes, please do an entire series like this. I loved this one, especially since I'm only interested in the darker side of mermaids (and pretty much all myths, legends and folktales)
