This is an amazing game but very elusive, so I always love to see any gameplay of it. The fact that they did a speedrun of it is equally satisfying.

This game was my Childhood and kick started my Slime addiction. EVERY Dragon Quest/Warrior Monsters game I played from this point had me going for the ultimate Metal slime. It's VERY satisfying to farm a Gran Slime in this game. It's just so much fun, even today in Joker 3 it's so fun to breed a Metal Goddess and continue the tradition of breeding the ultimate Metal slime.

Grizzly is such an obscenely powerful monster for how easy he is to get. Even at just +1 he's getting 17 - 20 ATK per level. I remember having one that was like +10 and he would get nearly +30 per level, which is hilarious and overpowered. Add TwinHits and the Berserker skills and suddenly this low-tier monster can dominate for the rest of the game.

I love watching speedruns of games I were obsessed with in elementary school. Other than the Prima guides, there were hardly any resources on the internet for these games at the time. I spent so much time on this series but I didn't actually know the game mechanics well and even the storyline went over my head as a 3rd grader. The first game even more so lol. I'm so glad pretty much every game has a speedrun or I'd forget about them and it'd just be lost forever in my mind.

Honestly I'm really glad to hear that, we didn't really prep commentary for this and I had no idea how I was gonna play off Tonic. Highspirits and Tonic worked together in the past I know and they're both naturally marathon vets and Dragon Quest vets so that helped a lot. I'd like to think we did all right, so hearing someone else say it is appreciated.

1:36:44 Why did they need to turn into a Kangaroo? In Tara's Adventure, Tara is actually small enough to fit through without needing to change into a small monster. That's one of the version differences in the DWM2 games.

41:00 - 43:00 "dem crits!" xD Now, in Monsters, Joker 2, my favorite monster type is a dragon, who has both dance and breath. Just my favorite combo to set up. It's a shame this wasn't as popular as GDQ but I liked watching it. If I had seen it when it was live I would have donated.

Commentator here (and runner of other games at the event). I do it for free (I do technically get a little bit of compensation in exposure but that doesn't really amount to monetary reward in most instances) and pretty much most of the people who go are content to do so. I dont speak for everyone, but for most of the people that I know attend these events, myself included, we do this because its fun and because we believe in the cause. The amount it would take to "pay" us, especially compared to what the marathon ends up raising, kinda defeats the purpose of even having a charity event in the first place. Plus its not what we really signed up for and Id probably just donate it all right back into the marathon, personally. Regarding charities, I personally read the Tax documents of any charity I support and I am fully fine with one like NAMI, who has a few people who make around 100-170k for good reason. If you want your non-profit to maximize its growth and outreach, you have to treat it like a business, and that includes hiring talented and skilled people to grow the organization. If you want those people, they need to be compensated for their hard work. A lot of charities would reach their peak pretty early if they expected people to work the amount they do when they could easily find work elsewhere. Its competitive (just like in any industry, there is a scarcity of donor money and you have to give reason for people to donate), and a lot of people who work for nonprofits who make that kind of income with a fulltime position are actually underpaid relative to their market worth compared to if they were working at a for-profit, but of course theres always a reason why they work for non-profits, which isnt just the money. In fact, these same highly paid key employees generally work more hours per week than a standard full-time job. Furthermore, those salaries are deceptive; while the charity itself is tax-exempt, individual persons who work for these nonprofits do have income taxes withheld just like non-contracted employees of any for-profit company. The difference between me and these employees is I am not hired, nor do I work for them. I go to an event once a year to help raise money for their cause. I do my research beforehand to look where the money goes and what is done with it. I am perfectly fine with 15-20% of it going to overhead, especially given that many of the people who work for NAMI are paid for work that involves actively working on the specific causes that the organization aims for. I know that they have done good work, I have friends who have gone to meetings put on by them which have helped their mental health considerably. I also am not naive enough to believe someone with a full time job could have the time simply volunteer to do unpaid work for NAMI for 40+ hours a week and keep both NAMI going and their bills paid. I always recommend people do some research into the non-profit sector. Its not what people think it is, but it makes plenty of sense usually. If theres any hesitation for whether you want to support a nonprofit organization, in the US 501c3-designated (i.e. IRS-declared tax exempt not-for-profit) companies are required to publicly post their last three annual tax documents (I believe their 990s specifically are always required but many also post audited documents and financial statements as well) for public inspection. I also recommend checking individual organizations for how they tackle their expenses and seeing how they fare on CharityWatch.
