There's more headspace on the V8 for upping the power, with Unichip and remap, bigger intercooler etcetera. That said, my 2013 D4-D Hilux achieved a 44% power increase with just a Unichip and DPF delete. It transformed the vehicle. Either way, if you do a Unichip + remap, put in an Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor and guage.

Well to be fair Paul, these days more people drag race and speed in utes rather than people in sports cars, so this is why it’s now common and popular to have ute drag races on many KZread channels, you’re right these vehicles aren’t designed to be speed demons but people will still flog them off the lights and gun it down the freeway anyway.

Hence there's more turbulence attack on the 70 series frame(both). Same kurb weight but aerodynamics speaks louder in this test. Keep it up brother Paul. V8 has a broader torque curve. The 4 cylinders have more peak power and torque. So from stand start the 4 cylinder rev out 1st and drop into its peak power band going into 2nd and so on. Plus the 4 cylinders are automatic so no time lost during shift.

    4 ай бұрын

@d15z1sux it comes in sooner. For example the v8 has 450nm from 1200rpm to 3000rpm, The 2.8 has 500nm from 2000rpm to 3500rpm. The v8 has more torque at lower rpm and peak at 450nm for longer range. The 2.8 only has more torque only from 2000rpm on wards. The 2.8 has to rev and be in its power band to beat the v8. Peak number on power and torque is one thing the other is where it's at and how long it last. Diesel normally don't like to rev high so really that v8 will tow all day at 2000rpm all day long. It's in it peak torque at that rev. Like my 200 series, shell seat at 2000rpm towing up hill all day long sometimes 2600rpm n that's going 110km up a hill pulling a boat.

Lots of vehicles do, in 1st/2nd it might be making 50hp less. Which would explain the poor performance off the line, but able to match speeds from a 3rd gear roll. Last question would be aimed at Toyota. What development haven't they done to the V8 to have such a poor power output compared to the 4 pot engines?

Given a reasonable curve/delivery, 500Nm should always be faster than 430Nm all else equal. Toyota's truly amazing achievement isn't that the 4 cylinder if faster. It is the mind bending ability to get so little power and torque out of such a large engine. Kinda reminds me of sub 200hp large capacity American pushrod V8s shortly after emission controls came in.

You made the absolute most crucial comment. A totally unstressed V8. The v8 will kill the 4 cylinder for life span. Tume the V8 of give the same minimum specs of the 200 or 300 series, then give it a drag race

Torque converter can help with up to double the torque on full slip. It would be good to see the 2.8 with the old manual that the 70 series has that would be a fair test. We all know an auto is better in drags. If they have the torque limiting removed that’s as about as fair as you can get. Not bias as I don’t have one but do drive a n80 for work and have driven the others and there’s more to it than just a drag.
