In this episode, Dr. Gabor Maté and Jeff discuss the premise that disease in our society is actually a normal consequence of a toxic social system driven by short-term profits over long-term human health.
In this episode we cover:
- The four psychological needs of healthy children
- Why attachment and authenticity are so important
- How your emotions and immune system are connected
- The social and psychological roots of disease
- Obstacles and pathways to healing

I also felt abandoned by my mother😵😵😵😭😭😭😭 She had to leave me for a week when I was a baby - she had to go away to her father's funeral. I think we didn't bond properly and I felt a really intense rage towards her. This later manifested as horrible acne well into my early 40s. Only when I addressed our relationship I was able to finally have clear skin 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸 I went to every medical professional I could find about my acne. The first thing they always suggested without any investigation whatever was Hormones! Just take birth control and you will be fine - never bought into it! Just didn't feel right! ‼️‼️‼️🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

It would help you to have some perspective. Your mom went to your grandfather’s funeral for a week when you were a baby, and you think that destroyed you for the rest of your life? I wish more people understood how very many children have been and still are horrifically abused by their parents. It is not uncommon at all. Ironically(or maybe not so ironically), it is these people who often end up being the most functional members of society because society is so dysfunctional, you need to have practice in a dysfunctional environment early in order to adapt to the world. Thinking of ourselves as victims rarely is helpful, especially when you aren’t actually a victim. Gabor is in the same boat, if his biggest trauma was his mother leaving him with someone else for a few months when he was a baby. I get vibes from him that he’s probably been spoiled by his mother, and later, his wife, and that’s where his “trauma” comes from. We always must look at ourselves in relation to our fellow humans, and if Gabor can’t do that, if he thinks he became a narcissist(which he absolutely is) because his mom wasn’t around for a few months, he’s very out of touch. But nowadays, it pays to tell everyone they are victims of trauma. I mean, we all our, because this world is so screwed up, but those of us who escaped the original trauma, which is that which is perpetrated by the people who are supposed to protect us, would do better thinking about how fortunate we are.

When interacting with others I always listen to how they announce their ailment(s) and how often they refer to them. "MY asthma", "MY bronchitis", "MY depression", "MY bad back", "MY allergies", "MY migraines", "MY sleep apnea", "MY sciatica", ETC.,...and of course, there's always that all inclusive, favorite one to fall back on..."MY fibromyalgia" _(like the elusive unicorn.)_ Whenever I hear someone refer to a "possible" ailment they're experiencing I listen for the preliminary "MY", and more-often-than-not, this tells me all I really need to know. "MY"____(fill in the blank)_____ says to me that commonly this person is holding on to their illness(es) tightly and not likely ever going to release and shed it. _(Translation: they're owning it and want to be sickly.)_ So, it only stands to reason that the next question any outsider should be asking them self is _"What's the payback for that person??"_ I feel the frequency of which being ill is spoken of and how a person addresses their ailment(s) speaks volumes about that person and the _"relationship"_ they have with being sick...to what degree are they comfortable _[[and dare I even say]]_ choosing to maintain being ill. Notice how some people are always sick and won't even try sensible advice or steps to possibly improve their condition. Might this _(instead)_ be a manipulative cry out for gaining attention for them?? I believe _(( NOT in all cases, but in SOME ))_ that when a person like this begins _"embracing"_ their ailment _(rather than seeking ways to move beyond it and shed it)_ that it possibly has largely become their identity, that it makes them feel _"special",_ and also that it becomes their crutch to avoid getting out of things they either don't want to do and/or face within their own life. From my observation, these people I'm referring to also tend to have a weak-to-nonexistent personal identity...as if, without having ailments to cling on to, they often don't even really know who they are. So, clutching onto illness not only gives them an identity, it also gets them attention and an excuse _(that most people would never even consider questioning)_ out of facing their life and managing their own affairs. _(Perhaps, might the true origin of their "ailments" be rooted in mental health, instead??)_ Notice, there are some people, who no matter how sick they may get, they'll QUIETLY _(without announcing it to any/and everyone who will listen)_ strive to get well as quickly as possible, so that they can get back to living and move forward in their lives. _(They have a life and an identity, but what they usually don't have, is time for being sick.)_ Society is much more graceful to those who hide behind being physically incapacitated rather than being seen as someone who truly is in need of mental help. I've also observed that these people who appear to possibly be hiding behind _"clutched onto"_ ailments often can _also_ be very manipulative...manipulating _"the system"_ and the people within their lives to get them to take care of them and do the things for them that they don't want to deal with. Again, as I stated earlier, I don't believe this is always the case, but often enough I've found there to be truth to this theory.

thank you. this truly hits the nail on a head of a person I have tried to help for years. They have every excuse for not wanting to achieve mental wellness. Stubborn and happy to feel sorry for themselves, knowing others have moved past similar experiences. Highly intelligent person choosing the path of least resistance because soul searching healing is a lot of work. Of course, those experiences are theirs alone but, carrying a constant unwavering defeatist attitude. I hate to sever a relationship though there is little gain since I never gain any satisfaction that I helped them. Beat the horse to death, I now move on to help someone who may be reachable and find joy / awe in other areas of life. Discovering Mate through a friend and an embedded link I'm filled with hope many are finding help for free! I'll do my chores today and listen & learn more - my favorite thing to learn something new! all the best

Gabor Maté's work is brilliant and hopefully will reach institutions very soon although if the traumatic event preceeding illness becomes the new medical scapegoat, I am afraid that nothing relevant will change to resolve and ultimately prevent the true issues of our systems. Mental healthcare is already structured that way: the focus is on family dynamics so that everything that structures family dynamics like culture, schooling system, working system and social practices keeps running unchanged. Just like pinpointing entropy at one single illness or group of illnesses does nothing to resolve the problem at its core, pinpointing trauma at one single (or at a few) particular event(s) keeps feeding the massive gaslighting in which our culture and systems are submerged today. Trauma piles up into illnesses throughout constant dysfunctional interactions that are normalized by cultural and systemic standards and if we scapegoat single oversimplified situations or elements, the complexity of context is lost and so it is the opportunity for true overall improvement. As Gabor mentions, the "justice" system itself perpetrates injustice and it is paramount to add that the schooling system perpetrates the loss of foundamental knowledge and relational health and that the healthcare system very often perpetrates illness under the constant assurance of dogmatic practices in specialized knowledge and of the impossibility to prove correlations between medical/scientific practices and long term damages. Scapegoating a single event for lifelong damages is just like scapegoating a single abuser for the entire cultural gaslighting in which he/she developed, it is insufficient and ultimately ends up weighting on already highly damaged perpetrators doing nothing to help and instead worsening the overall situation. Introducing single elements of knowledge without changing the structure of our organizations will just rush us into total collapse. The very structure of interpersonal relationships and social organizations needs healing or we'll just keep replacing scapegoats untill civilization will be completely lost.

She explained to us how her sister became “depressed” after her daughter passed away from a serious asthma attack and she developed a bone marrow aplasia. Since then I believed in the body mind unity ( not just connection) and this was emphasised when untrained at the New England Desconess hospital and met dr Benson personally, the one of the relaxation Response. Those days they gave him a basement space because they did not believe too much in this. It was the height of the AIDS epidemic and he was using his therapies to treat those patients, there was no HAART then , do the AIDS patients died

I read that over acidity was the cause of all of this. Acidity caused by my worry, stress, as well as a terrible diet. I changed my diet to all greens for a week....and by the second day, all of my symptoms were gone. No doctor...no prescription. I believe that the vast majority of our sickness stems from some type of non physical "trauma".

I feel like Live Boeree, and by extension Daniel Schachtenberger, have this nailed to the wall - ie. multipolar traps, or what Scott Alexander wrote about in his 'Meditations on Moloch'. This is what Darwinian evolution in motion looks like in human society if it's left to do its thing. It also matches the Dao in the way that John Gray borrowed it in Straw Dogs, ie. that the path of least resistance is natural selection, the destruction of all but the top 5-10% of people (based on luck, competitive edge, etc.) is what nature's actually aiming for much of the time - and it was value systems like Christianity, even Freemasonry to the extent that it was able to steer humanism, that stuffed a rag in the drain for a while.

I do not know, I would look online again since it's been one year. I'm embarrassed that NO ONE responded to your request for help. Good luck finding a great professional or just by finding something online. For me my anxiety was clearly pointed out during my divorce. I was married to a mentally ill person for 30 years. Part of that trauma was to run What if? scenarios constantly. The ATTORNEY was my savior. Yep, he said stop it, stop running all these what if's. It's costing you money, anxiety and for what? Who has ever heard of an attorney who helps people like that. Yes, they are part psychologist but they don't mind, they're usually happy to just listen to you vent about your ex and bill you for it! Some don't want to be your psychologist and suggest you get one but some people can't get there. It was a weird connection, it was immediate. The rest of the attorneys I interviewed never said the only thing that struck a chord with me. It was - there are no winners in any lawsuit/divorce/settlement. Because there aren't. We all know attorneys are the only winners because they get paid for this overkill of seeking revenge. I had no revenge I just wanted to stop trying to help someone who didn't want to receive. Keep looking. I've been to 9 therapist the only one who helped me was an intern- why is that? because they weren't in it for the money yet, keeping patients in need of their help. Now I just devour the internet until I find my answer. My anxiety has changed because I get super prepared for anything that causes me anxiety and then I let it go knowing I did all I could to calm. An A student is never happy until their grade is returned with an A. They have anxiety but, what they do is, study like hell and get prepared as they can. The test is to see if you know the material, not a test of your intelligence. It is out of habit that you get better at test taking. I had the test anxiety but it was because I had jobs, bus commuting and never had enough time to study. I knew it. I didn't have the mind set to take a class over because I couldn't afford to take a class over and later learned everyone repeats a class or two. It was that information gathering that I didn't have. The point is, look at what is causing you to have anxiety over flying, testing, presentations, whatever it is. Letting things go after the presentation, test. Look life is short in the big picture, if you didn't prepare you will next time, if you did and there was an unexpected, you learn to realize there are always unexpected's. it's part of life. Big picture outlooks will hopefully help you. C. Behavior Therapy may help you?

I think Gabor is such an incredible workaholic that he misses things or pursues them in a cursory manner. This becomes a kind of ‘denial’ which does serve his goals as he is already planning his next huge project. It’s so ironic to me that someone who nearly didn’t escape with his life from a fascist regime cannot see the implications of mandates and censorship, “cancellations@ and “denouncements” on such a massive scale. The lawsuits out there being brought for discrimination against religious exemptions, the VAERS database, the experimental drugs tested on the public and lack of informed consent…how does he not begin to notice red flags?. Then again if all your time is spent on focused research you simply will not and cannot pay attention to the huge volume of info. Presented on many alternative news and internet platforms.

Dr Gabor the reason for all the sickness today is because we are living in a fast paced world that the human brain cannot keep taking it day after day in work and education. Materialism is doing the same we get stressed and that creates further issues. To heal we all need to stop being pushed with out work and stop being so materialistic people with less are often happier better people. What we should be saying when we dont achive is SO WHAT.

You have the right to be angry. Be done with him in your mind. Consider what made your sister say such things? She sounds narcissistic if not, has mental problems. No one can tell you how to feel. People will help you deal with your feelings, process your pain. Accept she's made a grave mistake. Ignore this and move on if you can. She is your sister. She is allowed to make a mistake, consider she's feeling the guilt of what she did was wrong and may never get beyond her shame or know how to deal with the double whammy you experienced from her action. People deal with their mistakes in various ways. Forgiveness is not forgetting. Also, consider if it was just sex? & when it happened. It's been awhile since your post hope you found a neutral place in your mind about this or the pain is a little less. Once Again, I'm embarrassed so many folks pass by these questions from people, asking for an outside opinion or help and there were no responses. I'm coming to the conclusion that so few care about each other. No wonder the whole world is such a mess! I guess this is the point of Mate? I don't know didn't listen all the way through and John Lennon, All we need is Love, didn't help much so a celebrity as big as he and no actions have come through. In fact, we are worse off now with so many narcissistic leaders, mind controlling media, the hope lessens each day for humanity. Whatever Mate is, at least he is trying and it's free.

A curious mind is open to not being swayed this way or that but considering all points of view. If they shut their mouth and just donated to their cause it would speak volumes to me. When they don't and they just request money for their cause and don't volunteer any help and just spew what they think is real, then I take issue. We should never follow the masses without our own independent thinking The world is driven by a few. We are losing the biggest opportunity to creating curious minds which think independently. 3 year olds who continue to ask Why? End up being the few independent thinkers.

Thank you for sharing. I love Gabor and read all his books. What was surprising for me as I posted his talks for others that they brought to my attention that he is supporting trauma healing but during lock downs supported MSM propaganda and not his own teachings ( people now question his credibility ) not people who just are traumatized by society and mandates and were asking for compassionate respect for their right freely choose and be authentic in saying No as he talks in his lectures to be....Cathy Kearney - CBC News that has been brought to my attention and I really was just in questions about this and your reflections on it as people are asking me questions and healing of being......According to Dr. Gabor Maté, those who do hold extreme anti-vaccine ideologies, like people who have organized protests or aggressively taken to social media to spread conspiracy theories, often do so out of unresolved trauma from their childhoods. The best-selling author, retired physician and Order of Canada recipient who has spent more than a decade working with people who have addictions in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside says that sense of belonging within a group of people who support conspiracy beliefs brings temporary pleasure and a sense of power to vulnerable people. "We're looking at a lot of traumatized people who are finding a political outlet for their mistrust and anger," he said. "It's nothing to do with the issue itself, it has to do with the issue acting as a flash point for their own unresolved traumatic imprints." Would you be willing to talk about this and how do you look at this now when so many real things about vaccines transpired into our collective consciousness and questioning profits and support of this harmed many and now is related as well as people are pointing to your views and holding accountability Thank you.

From my own experience, "crying things out" may be undesirable for primary trauma events (where trauma potentially originates and develops from). But I can honestly tell that it helped me as an adult, while dealing with the consequences of prior (childhood) trauma and all the resistance and other coping mechanisms I have developed as a result. When someone manages to land a precise strike, going past all of your (artificial) defenses, it hurts. But then you have to face it - head on, no more BS. Because there's nothing else left to hide behind - all your cheap defenses were already defeated. There is extensive work around the topic of "re-traumatization" being done by Prof. Sam Vaknin and it shows promise for treatment of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (which itself is a post-traumatic condition/state).

But why does talk of human psychology never factor in macro-economic events like the decline of late-stage American capitalism? 1/3rd of America’s middle class has disappeared into poverty in the past 40 years. Wealth inequality is now worse than at any time in the nation’s history. Theses factors have real impact upon society, while Maté sells books and get wealthier the rest of us slip deeper into economic precarity.

The conspiracy theorists were right and he was wrong to dismiss them. Also not 100% sold on the idea that we need to coddle our children's feelings. Maybe a better strategy is needed but...
