Dr. Douglas J. Lisle, Ph.D.
Dr. Doug Lisle is an evolutionary psychologist and co-author of The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness. He and his colleagues (Jennifer Howk and Richard Seidel) have developed a revolutionary method for approaching life challenges and improving self-confidence and self-esteem. They describe their approach as Esteem Dynamics - an approach with clinical insights derived from evolutionary psychology.
Central figures having major influence on the development of Esteem Dynamics include Richard Dawkins, John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, David Buss, Robert Trivers, Steven Pinker, and Geoffrey Miller. All of these individuals are considered world-leading theorists in evolutionary theory and human psychology. Somewhat surprisingly, insights from these trailblazers has yet to reach mainstream clinical psychology, and thus major advances stemming from some of the world’s greatest thinkers have yet to be systematically applied to problems of helping people improve their lives. Esteem Dynamics is the first such effort, and weds Dr. Lisle’s 30-years of clinical experience to the deep insights into human nature only recently available via evolutionary psychology.
Dr. Lisle received his undergraduate education from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Virginia, and was then appointed Lecturer in Psychology at Stanford University. His research and clinical interests include health and wellness, self-esteem, relationship satisfaction, the treatment of anxiety and depression, the genetics of individual differences, and optimizing achievement motivation. In addition to his work with Esteem Dynamics, Dr. Lisle lectures widely on health and wellness.
Dr Lisle is available at selected days and times for a one-to-one, personal phone consultation:

I have a friend who lost more than 150# she is thin, looks fantastic and adheres to a food addict program that weighs and measures and has a sponsor just like AA. It keeps her on track and she hasn't gained. her weight has been stable for more than 5 years. She goes to meetings like AA. I went to one meeting with her. everyone was super kind and supportive and they share their stories etc. If it works for you, I say keep doing it. It literally saved her life. she weighed 300# and now she's thin and stable. If it doesn't work for you then find another approach. I get a little miffed at this line of questioning (because i know someone who stays on her plan, is alive, is happy, and isn't yo-yoing or overeating and feels supported.)

@@HeyYall398 I think so. If someone was going to AA for their alcohol addiction and it was keeping them sober no relapse, then someone who didn't find success with AA, relapsed.. etc. wants to bash a program that works for many. I just don't get it. There are ppl that FA helps. This isn't a competition ppl. I went to my friend's house for a week before the pandemic and ate like her except I didn't eat the small portion of meat or oil and I didn't weigh anything. I added beans or hummus. It was healthy with lots of veggies and a giant salad at dinner each night. I liked knowing what we were eating. Navigating a grocery store is daunting if you're a food addict. so if you see- hey! figs are in season!- I'm likely to immediately buy that. but before she ate it she'd talk to the sponsor and work thru a plan because it varies from the serving of sliced apple she eats every day. She also buys this very syrupy balsamic vinegar and is allowed to use it. It's just like California balsamic. If you're white- knuckling the grocery shopping each time, maybe it's good to have support from your sponsor. (Coach)

@@HeyYall398 true. The first time I heard him talk I was so mad and I turned it off. Ha ha. Now I've listened to many, many of his talks. I see the wisdom. The talks are helpful. I just don't always agree because women are somewhat stereotyped in his explanations and I'm not always "typical" as a women. but I see that he's talking from an evolutionary biological programming perspective, so I can hear it and glean information and understand about behaviors that may be under the surface. ... It's mainly about basic survival modes programmed into our genes. ...Since I was a D1 athlete in college I get his sports metaphors 😂

Before you make up your mind I would encourage you to look at all the research about the efficacy of these programs. You see, those who fail or are actually harmed by them (and there are many) are not the ones writing books or starting blogs or KZread channel. Dr. Lance Dodes has written many books on how 12 step programs like AA do more harm than good. Of course if it's working for you keep doing it, but when you work with hundreds of people who were damaged by being told they are broken so must weigh and measure their food for life you see a different side of the story. And what we didn't mention and perhaps Dr. Lisle can address, is they give the exact same food plan in ounces, to everyone regardless of their age, weight, height, metabolism etc. No animal in nature has EVER had to resort to weighing their food. So until you show me some solid research in the medical literature that proves otherwise, I will believe Dr. Lisle's statement that it's BS.

OH THIS IS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His description about the difference in the calories/pound of food about how it triggers our nutrient receptors makes sooooooo much sense! If we 'feel' that we're eating too much volume = essentially just increase the cals/pound slightly to find more satiety on less volume of food! At times, I have definitely been prone to eating EXCESSIVE volumes of veggies, to the point where my tummy hurts, but found zero satiety. Wish there was an easy way to work out volume vs density that suits us! I still struggle with this at times! His wisdom NEVER ends! Thanks for yet another fantastic interview AJ!

So I developed oral allergy syndrome or pollen allergy syndrome. I have figured out that I need to feed my gut with butyrate, I have a few autoimmune conditions and my body is just misinterpreting everything and mounting attacks. So, I started thinking about what the gut bugs who make butyrate eat. Resistant starch! Its butyrate that heals the gut, Short-chain fatty acids are so important.. and especially butyrate. So that brings me back to your channel. I am reacting to a number of fruits and vegetables. My mouth and tongue are on fire if I eat them and it lasts for days. But, I can eat beans.. potatoes.. etc. I think that butyric acid will heal the gut thereby healing the autoimmune and allergy issues. :)

If I were the young man with the first question, I would cancel my appointment with Dr Lisle and save myself some money if that is the advice. I love Dr Lisle, but he didn't speak to the young man who asked the question. He ignored him and had an imaginary conversation with his parents. I really felt for the young man who has reached out for help for what HE could do to escape his addiction. Would Dr Lisle ask for his parents' phone number in their one to one appointment?

It’s because left wing politics has a vision. The nature of being progressive means they are trying to change society “for the better.” I think humanity is in trouble so we do need change. But the left is banking on the idea that you can use culture to mold humans into anything you want. They have a utopian vision that is unrealistic. We need to understand what humans are so we can come up with realistic solutions. You can’t just try to teach boys to play with dolls and girls trucks. It’s a really hard problem and we aren’t going to get to that better world by pretending humans don’t have hard instincts to contend with. You should read The Blank Slate by Steven Pinker. It’s about why the left wing universities rejected EP.
