Don't Call it a Yoke - Lexus Steer By Wire Review in the RZ 450e

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Lexus RZ 450e will eventually be available with something very different: a yoke in place of the steering wheel. However, it’s not just a yoke bolted onto the steering column for drivers to pretend they’re Batman. It is in fact an intrinsic part of an entirely new steering concept, officially called Steer by Wire, that could revolutionize the way we interact with the front wheels of a car. An angle sensor in the column senses how much you turned and sends that info to the usual electric power steering system, while the car determines how fast the car is going. Those two pieces of info are then used to radically alter the steering ratio and therefore how much you have to steer. In this video, Autoblog Senior Editor James Riswick climbs behind the wheel, err yoke, to tell you what the system and its yoke are like to drive.

I didn´t get tot test it on a course. We got to try it on public roads. But would be fun to test it on a course without trafic.

Just came across this concept and looked it up, so I'm late to the video... As much as this is interesting and innovative, seems like it is also impractical, in the sense that it would take an extreme amount of time and effort to re-train the population into a non "ten-and-two" driving position and speed-adapted turning, which is far less intuitive, in my opinion. Also, I like to rest my left hand on top of the window frame and steering wheel on long drives, and that's entirely gone with a yolk 😢

That sounds all fine and good. But what in 10y when your going down the road and one of the steering servos have a minor glitch and your doing 90mph and figure out oh snap I can't turn any more. What kind of safety's are in place?

People just want to be down on Lexus and don't want to give Toyota/Lexus credit for implementing this tech quite convincingly. I urge people to watch the extended street drives on this steer by wire by Autogueful or Electrifying. I'm sorry, but with all this boring range talk about this car they aren't seeing that Lexus has produced a Lexus with its refined manner and excellent build quality while on this version, introducing a much different and more direct and more efficient steer by wire system. I also think the radiant heating is a quality worth talking about. Why is it that Mercedes can add so many gimmicks like the hyperscreen and way too many ambient lights yet Lexus gets knocked for making a more grown up, almost gimmick free, refined car for not the insane amount of money Mercedes is charing for the EQE and EQS? And it's nowhere as heavy as the Mercedes either with its oversized batteries and tires. Why so much importance given to range? You supposedly charge the vehicle up while you sleep (that's why BEV promoters keep telling people), few people are driving 100 miles a day so what's the big deal? This is a very nice vehicle and the steer by wire is a major advance in city driving and parking situations. Maybe it is a better solution than rear-wheel steering.

Works the same as Tesla yoke, no difference even with steer by wire.

No it doesn't. The steer by wire requires no hand over hand movements and is completely variable. The Tesla system is just a mechanical steering system with a yoke replacing a regular steering wheel.
