No More Yoke! Tesla Model S Round Steering Wheel Retrofit
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Kyle purchased the Tesla Model S / X round steering wheel retrofit from the Tesla accessory website - the Loveland, CO based service team suggested a mobile service appointment and that's exactly what happened! Check out his thoughts before and after the yoke swap to a wheel and the mobile service P100D Ludicrous that was kitted out to repair Teslas. Pretty sweet!

2 stalks: one for the turn signal, one for gear selection. The touch screen doesn't always take the "swipe" which gets to be a hassle during parallel parking or 3 point turns. Lastly, why can't they get the damned horn under the airbag?

Steering wheel snob here as well. Drove my friend's Model 3 with a yoke for a week and just could not get used to it and one time smacked me in the back of the hand when I went to take over as it was about to hit a curb. Yokes are for planes and race cars. You need to be able to turn lock to lock in just a few degrees either direction. Once the yoke needs to be turned past about 45º, forget it, it's a hazard.
I'm glad you were able to get the round wheel, now @Tesla needs to bring back the stalks!!🤞
Keeping my Yoke, I love it.
Just had Tesla mobile service swap my yoke for a round wheel. I put a year and a half and 12,000 miles on the MS Plaid with yoke. I don't do track, and got used to the yoke pretty much. However, I missed the round wheel of my prior MS and also my current Model Y Performance. I like having the ability to have my hands smoothly move with the round wheel on turns, etc. I'm happy! Kept the yoke as a wall ornament.

I got my Plaid in March of Last year and lived with the Yoke for about 4 months. In July of so, I installed a Hansshow Napa leather round wheel. Every steering wheel should be made of real leather. It felt amazing in my hands. Because it was round and heavy, I was able to drive much more smoothly through parking lots and in tight turns. Then when I was alone on the road and could drive in a spirited way, I finally felt like I was driving a real performance car. I honestly can't say anything positive about that yoke accept that it didn't suck as bat as I thought it would, and it did make the care feel special and futuristic. The horn button really sucks. I have a dent in my front bumper that most likely would have been there if I could have blew the horn fast enough before some bozo backed into me in a drive-thru. It took 3 or 4 months, but now I actually prefer the turn signal buttons over the stalk. I have a new Plaid on order, and I hope the wheel will feel good. I really don't want to risk messing it up by having it recovered in leather.
The motorvibration comes from the "extra-heating" when the car is cold. 3,5KW from each motor. Magnets are monted in a different way compared to the way they are in other EV's.
I love how the yoke looks but had to switch as my daughters also use the car.
Congrats on the wheel buddy! Though I didn't hate the Yoke either, I think it does take away a little from the driving experience. There is just something inherently satisfying about working a round steering wheel. Can't wait to test the Model S with a round wheel now. I think you're initial impression about the seating height is correct. I am 5'10 and in most cars I can set the seat quite low and still have an inch of two left before I hit the bottom - like in my Porsche Taycan. But in the Model S I set the seat all the way down and still feel I am sitting a little high. So you at 6'1 I imagine are seating quite high.

That camera view from your front camera makes the steering wheel look huge.
Good for you! Those kits are now sold out. Obviously many drivers prefer a wheel. I always thought the yoke was a poor decision: slick and sporty looking, but does nothing to actually improve steering. Of course, after decades behind the wheel, perhaps I'm too conditioned to traditional steering. Indeed, I see NO real reason to have done aways with the stalks either. I do NOT like the idea of those buttons.
I don't think the yoke is better, but for sure it adds some character to the car and makes it a little bit more fresh to see.
Finally somebody beeing honest instead of desperately trying to sugarcoat this stupidity!
I traded my Model X 2020 for a Model X 2022 just for the yoke......I love it and can't imagine driving without it.
Yokes are for aircraft or any transportation method that requires steering with a limited range of motion. Fine as long as the driver does not cross arms at end of rotational travel. Wheels are for mechanical advantage requirements where multiple orbits may be needed to produce required effort in the steering gear. Like a farm tractor.

May look more 'boring', but it's 100x more practical and useful than the spinning wrist-breaker rectangle of death. Drove both and there's no comparison. There's a reason cars have had round steering wheels for over a century. Because they work the best. Other steering methods have been tried before many times, even a joystick, but ultimately, the steering wheel wins out every time because it's the most ergonomic, intuitive and practical. The yoke is just change for the sake of change and a weak attempt to be different. Owners who have a Tesla with a yoke hate it so much that as soon as Tesla started to offer the round wheel retrofit, it immediately sold out in their online store. That should tell you something.
I would have preferred to see the Model 3 wheel and stalks. That’s the setup I would want, if I’d upgrade to a newer model S. But I could not find a link to the segment you referenced in your description
Great vid. Thanks for the info. I want to mount my phone on the upper left of the main center screen. With a yoke it seems like there would be plenty of visibility to see the phone. Would the round steering wheel block the phone in that position?
I switched to the Yoke in my MYP because I have the Hansshow touch screen display, and yes you can see the screen OK through the stock wheel, but touching it to actually make use of the touch screen is a pain in the butt with the stock wheel in the way.
Thank god. Everyone that signed off on the old yoke design + steering ratio should feel bad about what they did.
yoke is cool only if dont need to turn it more that 180 degrees. But then you will need steer by wire or variable ratio gearbox attached to it.
Kyle, you should get a drive in the new Lexus RZ450e to see how a yoke should be implemented. Simply replacing a steering wheel with yoke is not the way to do it.
I use voice command frequently. “Play Steely Dan” 😂
You'll need indicator stalks
So, my question is when will Tesla retrofit the stalks into the package? For the cost of the round wheel, I wouldn't proceed unless they gave me back the base functionality with it: turn signals, gear selector and horn. For all of this, I would consider coughing up the dough, but not just for the wheel.

Plus they swiped his airbag. That was his, not theirs. Can't believe she took it. What if he wants to go back to the yoke?
I kept looking at the Land Cruiser 😂
The yoke seems like a solution looking for a problem.
The rumbling noise in the morning is most likely just your tires. Drag Radials and Summer tires don't have silica and they get hard flat spots when parked for a while. Colder it is the worse it is. Driving them for a few miles will round them back out. Also, it doesn't help that the Model S is a bit heavy.
About the airbag, I think why they left it to you, but in the center of the new wheel :) If you look at your video at 15:24 you can see there is no airbag in the new one that is still wrapped... Probably similar to the aftermarket steering wheel for Model 3 and Y where you transfer the airbag from the old one to the new one.
@Hans-gb4mv
Жыл бұрын
The wheel comes without the airbag installed, otherwise the tech would have to remove it again, on site, to install the wheel. Much easier, safer and faster to not pre-install it.
How's the retrofit? Any comparison between the Tesla version and the Hansshow version?
I do agree I don't think the yoke is much a safety hazard, I do think that there not being stalks for turning signals is though. I think it just encourages people to use them less as now it takes more effort to find and hit them where with stalks you hit is with a single flick. Personally just don't like the yoke though as on longer drives I like to move my hands around to keep my wrists and arms from getting stiff. Plus in city driving I tend to put my right hand on top of the wheel (around 2:00) just before turns to stagger them. That's not really possible with it. I know it's technically a less safe technique, but I find it more comfortable.

Once you get used to the buttons it is the exact opposite. Slightly moving a thumb is much faster and easier than a stalk, although it definitely takes a while to get used to it.
Hey Kyle. Just picked up a model X long range in ultra red. Wonder if the new Model 3 wheels can be retrofitted to the S and X. The horn placement is bothersome. I can live with the signal lights although I think the left signal should remain on left side but the right should have been placed on the right side of wheel
Hopefully the team at Aptera is watching this.
I’ve driven a model S LR with the yoke since Dec 2021 and my greatest problem is the horrible horn button. I expected a NHTSA recall to move horn button to the center where it belongs. Road trips on the highway is where the yoke is great. But, it’s poor for parking and other frequent turns. It does make the car look futuristic. But, within a year or two, I will sell this EV and wonder if there’s better resale value with round wheel.

I ride a motorcycle too, so a horn and turn signal buttons are natural for me. No big deal. You just get used to it. NHSTA hasn't recalled any motorcycles yet. 😀
Am I correct that the last video that Jordan did w/ Out of Spec was when he crashed the Plaid?
I don't see the Model 3 wheel video you said you'd link in the details. Did I miss it?
My question is why do you have to pay extra for a “normal” wheel which works well on cars from day one? Yoke makes sense if it’s steer by wire.
I think we all felt the satisfaction of your switch! I would do the same. :)
Yoke or not, I think Tesla should restoring the center horn button! it's way more important.
You can tell when an old thinking person owned the car. Round steering wheels were for cars before power steering you know drives like a tank. Electric assist with three quarter turn lock to lock no upper wheel blocking view of dash is the way anyone who has never driven a car would pick. The good news is the market for the yoke wheel as young people buying used Tesla and wanting to upgrade from the old fogey version also remove dice from mirror and foxtail from antenna.
Tell us more about restoring the stalks, please. When the wheel was not an option on the Model S, that was the deal breaker. I'd rather have the stalks, as the turn signal buttons are illogical. And not having the horn in the center of the wheel is still a deal breaker. I am not sure if the S3XY buttons will actuate the horn, If so, that would be an acceptable workaround, even with a slight safety issue if the airbag actuates. And what is the stutter on the horn? You can no longer give a good long satisfying UP YOURS horn honk? Last, wave hello at the folks at Poudre River Hospital. That's where I got my first stent after my Life Flight ride in the snow from Laramie. Great place to be when it's not snowing!
is the steering wheel as wide as the yoke or smaller? I am wishing it is the size of the Y or 3 wheel
For those of us who drive with hands at 4 and 8 instead of 2 and 10 might like the yoke
how much is the change? thinking about a test drive unit with a discount but comes with a yoke, if changing it is worth it, could be a good way to save good money!
THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!!! I knew they had to someday give this option. This was my only gripe about not purchasing the Model S. I really hated the Yoke Steering and how it performed!!! The button turn signals is probably something I will have to deal with. Tesla should of kept sh*t the way it is.
Does the new S still have the “rumble” that past owners complain about?
our old car [Vauxhall Astra 2015] steering wheel blocked the top of gauges for my seating position
My Model X Plaid makes that same vibration/noise during the first mile. I thought it was a pump running. Not a fan of the yoke either.
Will the new steering wheel come with a horn in the center like a regular car does? Or it is still the same press a small button at the worst position possible thing?
Now stalks and it can finally work anywhere for me again
Did you get to keep the yoke though? That would be the only way I'd do this, if I could keep it and swap it out later. Doesn't seem like its difficult to do.
Definitely prefer that steering wheel over the non intuitive yoke 😮
I’d love to install your yoke on my model s and remove my round wheel. Be cool to install the yoke from Out of Spec. Please advise

Like! Still looks weird to me with the wheel, but maybe in time, it will be more normal. The yoke used to look weird to me, but now looks modern and fitting. We're sticking with our yoke for now. It's totally fine. But if the car had come with a wheel, we wouldn't have known better.
