I love the way you deliver this review in that chilled, bear like way. Very appealing. The information given is absorbed easily and there is no grandstanding. Thank you. I’ll take your style with me into my own reviews this year. As for the car? I love that we are finally seeing useful, game changing tech entering the market. When developed to its potential new tech like this will save lives and reduce stress on the road, always a good thing.

The plus point of the Lexus is that is a Lexus. If you ever had one you know what I am on about. If you haven't... Lexus are super refined, totally reliable, extremely well put together and they have such lovely interiors.

They're just very calming and at the same time planted on the road. My sister has an RX. It's superb.

Beautiful car. I’ve owned and driven the Lexus 400h the past several years and love it. I’d consider this Lexus but the battery range is low and the price high.

Less range than the BZ4X? Is that possible? Considering the BZ4X has come in for some of the heaviest criticism of any EV because of its porr range, I don't think that's likely to do well.

@@Cmdaddy88 Actually, a LOT of people care about range. They shouldn't, but they do. Personally, I don't NEED a range of more than about 200 miles, it would be nice to have a bit more to allow for the degradation of the battery over the 5-7 years that I intend to have my next car, but I only very rarely go more than about 100 miles from my house. But I was taught to use critical thinking, most people aren't. Most people, especially those that pay attention to the UK print media, seem to think that they need to be able to go more than 500 miles. OTOH, at the price this vehicle is going to be selling at, such a short range is going to be a tough sell.

considering toyota's stance on evs, i think they're banking on the bz and rz mainly attracting existing toyota/lexus customers who want to go electric but don't want the perceived risks that come with some rivals (build quality, reliability, brand image, overall design). it's the same approach they use to their normal lineup: it doesn't matter if the camry isn't as efficient, advanced, or refined as its competition-- people will buy it because it's a camry. if they wanted to make a true world-beater, then they'd have to invest a whole lot more into r&d and only contribute to the ev hype bubble, directly going against the ethos they've established. but at the same time, they've admitted that it would be financially irresponsible NOT to have an ev on offer in the current automotive climate. that's why they share the development with subaru-- their evs are intended to be supplementary rather than class-leading. people who are serious about maximizing range and value will likely turn to competitors, but i have a feeling that's not really a concern to toyota. the bz and rz are designed purely to fill a market segment, and all they really need to sell them is their existing reputation.

@@ouijabored45 The problem for Toyota is that their market is shrinking rapidly, and that is going to accelerate. Where European legislation (and, for that matter, Californian and even Australian legislation) leads, other markets follow. This is the reason why Brexit is so idiotic, it was sold as allowing the UK to create its own rules, but the reality is that companies have to follow the rules of their biggest market(s). And the automotive industry's 2 biggest markets are the EU and China. And Toyota are being massacred in both of those markets. So, Toyota and Lexus are fine in their home market and the USA, but the USA is pretty much guaranteed to adopt legislation that will favour EVs, tat will happen sooner or later, and Toyota sits their, twiddling its proverbial thumbs. And now even Toyota's shareholders are starting to get nervous, hence the resignation of Akin Toyoda's resignation, something which would have been simply unthinkable only 5 years ago. Yet, instead of installing a replacement capable of turning the juggernaut around, Toyota promoted someone who is even more invested in Toyota's dinosaur attitudes. No matter how loyal Toyota's customers are, if they can't buy a Toyota because the Toyota is either a crap or b unavailable they'll go elsewhere. And other manufacturers are now matching Toyota's USP, reliability. In fact, the most unreliable EV is more reliable than the most reliable ice equipped vehicle.

Watched three good reviews of this car before watching yours. This is the most electrifying of them all. Subscribed.

Great review, love the presenting style. I think Lexus have done a top job here and the implementation of the yoke seems much better thought out than Teslas. I also must’ve getting used to EV pricing as I was actually expecting it to cost more than it does. Be interesting to see how efficiency stacks up against the competition but in all other respects, it looks good.

When you switch back the wheels are going to be actually pointing where the steering wheel is. This reviewer left out quite a important bit about this tech - there is a delay in this system. Meaning when you move the steering wheel the actual wheels are always a bit behind of what you are doing. It is noticeable with a blind eye btw.

I like the big mirrors and the use of traditional door handles that work in winter and real buttons/dials for controls/functions you use the most. Those put it above Tesla for me.

Great review. Not much criticism of what will be a very poor range. 65 kWh or so useable battery is just not good enough for such a large heavy car, You just know the efficiency will be rubbish. They have done the "yoke" right it seems being variable radius depending on speed etc. Better than Tesla! Plenty of positives but price vs range/efficiency will be a fail.

Given the small battery pack the real world range of 320km is very good. It has 15 years warranty as well, 1 millions mls!

Canoo are also using drive by wire so that looks like the next big thing technology wise. The canoo is better packaging however. This looks very standard. I assume that the lexus has the same charging fault in that it will only allow 2 rapid chargers before it throttles the speed for 24 hours.

Great review but high pitch noise during some sections were painful on headphones. Technical issues with the audio or do I need new headphones?

Yes, apologies. We tried desperately to get rid of it on the day of filming and in the edit. I only happened when the car was switched on, so can only assume one of the systems causes an interference. We couldn't do the review with the car switched off though!

Excellent review. It’s another car of that ever popular type, but at that price, I suspect it will only attract a rather niche customer

Not used to this presenter but great job. This steer by wire implementation looks like Lexus spent time with it to get it as close to right as they could. The usual Lexus qualities are there and this is a pre-production car. I love the dashboard. It somehow flows well and the screen just looks like part of the dashboard rather than something propped up on it. Bravo. The price? If it feels refined and it's going to be reliable, Lexus has every right to charge more. The range? I kind of don't care and I'm tired of hearing about range but it's not as good as it should be. Not a dealbreaker for me at all. But Lexus should work on the range and charging speed.

Really like this guy who is presenting. Would like him to get in touch if possible. Really like the car also 👍

OMG what a good review

Without cabin heater/s - how can the windows be de-misted? And during winter and rainy days, how can the cabin be prevented from becoming damp? Or is this car only meant for dry climates?

It has conventional heaters too. You just use them less.

What recalls? The wheel hub recall was fixed back in October. There may be recalls but recalls happen with almost all brands.

Like the bz4x does it also have a limit to the number of quick charger kWh per 24 hours? It seems that bz4x can only charge 90 kWh in 24 hours with a speed higher than 50 kW

The limit has been increased in this to 170 kWh per 24 hours, which should be enough even for long trips.

It's odd isn't it, all the debates and fuss in the media about range anxiety and slow charging, yokes and too little space. And then there are people who don't care about all that and who just want to drive a sofa.

Canoo EVs also have steer-by-wire steering.

Just purchased this vehical with the 18" wheela and let me tell you, it is an absolute joy to drive. I tested the Tesla Y and the RZ450e. The Lexus wins hands down! Soooooo comfortable and looks way cool. Bye Tesla.

Thanks for your good review. After we got taxes on electric cars in Norway the 24 model RZ Executive with all the equipment you ned has a cost that I nearly don't dare to tell because it's around 44.800. Then I understand that our taxes for ev's still are low, but if we would buy a. Toyota Rav4 plug in hybrid which is a quite low emission car with the right use we cannot affort it because it has a cost of 11.000 more.

Does it have the wheels stay attached to the vehicle feature?

In all honesty, I've never been impressed by Toyotas, but am willing to accept that Lexus might make sense. However, I have very, very strong doubts whether the Toyota group will be able to survive the move over to full electric. I know, I know, They've got rid of their Luddite chairman, but they have been so determinedly anti EV for such a long time that, even if they became the most pro-EV company in the entire world, I don't know whether they can overcome such a hurdle. That they've also so convincingly shot themselves in the foot wrt their range claims surely can't help, can it? BTW, I am an equal opportunities naysayer: I can't stand Tesla either.

This talk of survival seems, well, I watched the History channel about Toyota and Honda. Back in the 1950s they really struggled but Toyota's head at the time kept with it and kept with it until he figured out a way to make his cars work in the USA. He had failure and setback after setback, and the financial position of Toyota was not healthy, yet Toyota stuck with it and turned into the top Japanese imported car in the USA. Also, in 2011 they went from crises to crises and came out of it thriving. So, talk of Toyota "surviving" seems to lack this historical perspective of the real culture of Toyota and you are severely underestimating the will of this company that they've proven numerous times.

@@PreschoolDropout673 From a purely engineering POV, just the idea of a hybrid is a pretty dumb option. "We've got 2 engineering options here, but there is very little commonality between the 2" "I know! Let's double the complexity and weight just because we can". I do know that Toyota made in work, but that is in spite of it being a bad idea, not because it was a good idea. In truth, I think hybrids work not because they are a good idea, but because the electrical side is so damned reliable. If you look at the reliability statistics from the only source that I know of that is totally independent, the most UNreliable pure EV, the Jaguar iPace, is still more reliable than the most reliable non EV (can't remember which it was - maybe Toyota Corolla or Honda of some kind), and that wasn't a small difference in reliablity, it was a statistically important one. "Until true adoption takes place" When will that be? Because there are now quite a few places, particularly in Europe and China, where it would be unreasonable to cliam that it hasn't happened; In Norway the infrastructure is definitely there and there are now more EVs sold than all others put together. In The Netherlands there are so many fast chargers that you're never more than, I think, 10 mins away from one anywhere in the country. And most of the rest of northern Europe is not far behind those models. FFS, I live in very rural Spain, and the furthest apart fast chargers are is getting down to about 15km.

@@davidcolin6519 neither complexity nor weight are 'doubled.' Weight definitely is lower for a hybrid than a long range ev, and the complexity of adding a motor and small battery to an ice car is not a herculean effort. I agree EVs are likely more reliable because they have less that can break, but my plug in hybrid rarely turns on the engine from daily commuting, so why carry 60 extra kwh of battery capacity? True adoption will be when people get over the range anxiety, cheaper alternatives are available, and the electrical grid can support the extra load. I don't think those things have happened, thus mass adoption is not as close as people believe.

A airplanes has mechanical override on everything. Driven Lexus for 13 years and the only problem I have had was a $30 problem, so I trust them with steer by wire.

While I was not a fan of the yoke on the Tesla because it is precisely not steer by wire, this tech makes sense. the range does not, though... at least for me

When you make claims about efficiency and range, are these your own findings, or are you using Toyota numbers? All of the actual numbers I havee seen on the bz4x have been very poor. Especially in winter. Is this different? ( Not just talking about top buffer changes )

Well from we’re I am from we don’t get the Model Y or any Tesla you have to do a very expensive Grey import so our options are limited to German EVs , Swedish or Japanese. The RZ is a no brainer here.

This car is only $120k plus onroads in Australia. Not for most of us!

Great review and informative. I have owned different Lexus cars over a number of years. You can not beat the quality and finish of their vehicles or their after sales service. I wouldn’t buy a Tesla with all their panel and finish problems and never knowing when the value of my main investment is gong to be reduced.

Audio quality not great here. Mic when in car Reduces high pitch to e.

I do worry about the potentially huge costs in years down the line.

that's true with most evs nowadays, but i have a feeling those costs will be much less in a lexus than, say, a tesla or bmw.

I like the copper colour but I bet the car is expensive

The overall quality of the functional parts and of the materials, as well as the reliability is gonna be worlds ahead in this car compared to a Tesla. That and the more distinguished looks, brand affection and the fact that everyone and their grandma has a Tesla these days will be enough to make this look appealing to some I think.

Yes, awful steering, pain falling of, rushed at the factory, suspension feels as a 80s Dodge Ram, almost zero insulation, awful paint, awful interior quality, awful customer service, awful repair service, wait time for service is 3 months. Where do a Model Y kick this car to the curb? Netflix at the screen and 0-60? My LS600Hl has had less problems after 160K miles then my friends 4 month old Model 3. Everytime he drives with me he say how quit and nice it rides compare to his Model 3.

I wish Lexus would design a car that looks good. This is too angular and could pass as a Renault or Citroen. Just doesn't have a premium look for me. Not a fan of the yoke. Shame about the range.

Toyota BZ4X already has a dreadful range, so I am immediately worried that this Luxus will be more of the same.

Not impressed honestly- it’s a rebadged bz4x and rebadged Subaru ev -also, steer by wire wasn’t created by Lexus - Infiniti had steer by wire in 2017

Tesla need to learn from Lexus how to build a relaxing well built luxury car and Lexus need to learn from Tesla how to make an efficient EV if they actually want to sell many.

This Lexus design is perfect! Normal steering wheel would be more better tho my oppinion. If im right You can get rounded Steering wheel If You want to this EV Lexus

Oh dear, it fails 3 of my red lines. No rear wiper, Only nearly One Pedal Driving, charging port in the worst possible place. Why are manufacturers so stupid?

cool car, pity it’s built on the weak Toyota BZ4X platform. As a result, the drivetrain can’t compete with the best from Tesla, Kia or Hyundai

Interiors of Lexus have been going down hill every generation. The screen you get here is the same almost entirely across their line. As well, knobs, switchgear and overall design have declined. One only has to look at the redesigned Lexus SUV"s to see they are already a generation behind in quality and design - yoke or no yoke be damned. A shame.

Another car designed by the Japanese Origami school of auto design for the visually impaired 😂

Ohh. But that steering wheel.. Nope.

Exterior 2-tone doesn't look good to me. Deal breaker for me.

@@mev202 Lexus wouldn't put something dangerous on the road. A lot of race cars are driven by yokes. But the yoke isn't the important thing. The variable drive by wire is. It could have any type of steering wheel on it the feature is how it variably changes tightness in the steering with speed and it only turns 150 degrees total. Tesla is nothing like this. It's just a regular steering mechanism with a yoke replacing a circular wheel.

Canoo has same steering column design. Lexus is NOT first.

Ugh, yet another blobby crossover. They're even more pointless as electric cars because the body shape alone is the difference between 3mi/kwh and 4mi/kwh. These cars need to disappear!
