DOES THE BIBLE SUPPORT POLYGAMY?

In this video, I explain in details what the bible actually teaches about polygamy
What was God's idea at the beginning?

@@Polygyny If men have the right to have more than one wife, so does a woman. God doesn't do double standards. No matter how much you try and deviate from it, polygamy doesn't work for women. Let's say you have 3 women, and one of them creeps out on you with another dude and she brings back a disease. Then what? Now you got 3 other people infected, and the other wives wouldn't have deserved that. You can do what you want, just be assured that it doesn't mean Jehovah God approves and won't have you answer for it.

  • @Polygyny

@RandaWise God does do double standards - a woman gets pregnant a man can't, men are called strong, women are called the weaker vessel, women are to wear head coverings in the assembly men don't wear head covering. God sent a male Saviour, a woman was not sent. A man is the image of God, a woman is not the image of God but sharing aspects of the image because she came from a man. God is called Father, not Mother. There are double standards all over the bible and all over reality. Double standards created by God is righteous and good. Double standards are not inherently bad or oppressive - only when abused Your feelings and opinions don't change the fact that God, The God and Father of Christ and the Lord of Host BLESSES polygyny but CONDEMNS polyandry Men and women are NOT equal and never will be. God did not give men and women the same rights - why do you think God placed men/husbands as the head of women/wives. Trying to be equal with men is rebellion and witchcraft against God so tread carefully Keep things simple and don't complicated thing with Western feminism. Feminism and the bible are not compatible. It was God who create inequalities between men and women so men and woman are interdependent not independent as feminism foolishly teaches and has clearly led women like you astray. Get back on the right path and understand you position as a woman and accept the position of a man as God has structured not as your feelings have structured Take up your arguments with God, not with me 👍

2:50 - "someone who is a church leader should excel in all these ways..." Exactly. Which is why Paul telling men that were already only married to 1 woman at the time (Roman law) to be a "husband of one wife" makes ZERO sense. It also doesn't make any sense today. Being married is hardly something that makes you above reproach as a church leader. Being married and NOT promiscuous (a one woman man, aka no sex outside of marriage) definitely makes you above reproach. These verses don't mean what we think they mean.

A "husband of one wife" for a bishop/deacon/elder is a much debated set of verses. Frankly they don't make sense as Paul would have been writing to the Roman/Greek gentiles primarily who would only be allowed by law to have one wife anyway. What makes more sense is that he was saying "first wife" or in my opinion using an idiom of "one woman man" which translates to "not promiscuous" or faithful to your wive(s)/only having sex inside of marriage.

@@BuiltRight I agree that the idiomatic sense of it makes the most sense to me. Paul using the idiom “one woman man” would have made the Greek/Roman men and women stop and think what did he just say? Yeah they were all used to only legally being able to marry one woman or man, but sex outside the marriage was very normal especially for men. So Paul really would have been suggesting something radically different from their norm in society. While not outlawing men who are covenant keepers with multiple wives from leading the congregation, as that was never a disqualification among the Israelites for leadership, obviously (Moses, David, Solomon… Joash) etc … No matter where you land on what it really means, I am 100% confident in saying that Paul would never make what was never a matter of reproach prior, a matter of reproach as a Christian, which is a man covering more than one wife. Whether or not it’s an exemption for church leadership, doesn’t make it a bad thing, “new converts” can’t be elders either, but it’s not a matter of reproach to be a new convert. So the fact that people read that into what *could mean* an elder need only have one wife, doesn’t make it so.

@@RandaWise Isn't it just great when heretics point out Deut 17:17, because they're unknowingly proving themselves to not read the Bible 😂 Here is the passage, since this is probably the first time you read the entirety of it: *The King* 14 When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, “Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,” 15 be sure to appoint over you a king the Lord your God chooses. He must be from among your fellow Israelites. Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not an Israelite. 16 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the Lord has told you, “You are not to go back that way again.” 17 He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold. Yes, that "he" in Deut 17:17 is referring to the Israelite king of the new land. This would be very obvious had you read the previous verses properly. Deut 17:14-17 is targeted toward such a specific profession that Jerusalem kings aren't even affected by it. So now, feel free to repent from spreading your falsehood.

Yes Jesus quoted Moses in Matthew 19 about divorce and not polygamy. In fact, Moses had at least 2 wives himself when he wrote Genesis. The problem is prescriptive monogamy is a Greco-Roman Catholic Church doctrine that’s contradicts Scripture. 1 Timothy 3:2 is mistranslated in our English translations where the word ‘one’ is best transliterated ‘a,’ ‘first’ or ‘faithful.’ This is why even modern day translations like NET, NLT, NIV, CEV versions all recognize this that the word ‘one’ is not the most appropriate transliteration of ‘mias’ in this verse. For instance, the NIV translates it as, “2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach…”

3:51 - Jesus said nothing about the "permitting" of polygyny being because of the hardness of hearts like he did on divorce. Don't throw our patriarchs under the bus by labeling them as sinful men like the men Jesus was rebuking with the divorce talk. Jesus didn't say a word about polygyny. Why? Probably because God has no issue with the practice, like he does divorce. If God wanted to limit a man to one wife, he would have somewhere in the text as he did for women so many times. You're reading INTO the text what you want to be there, rather than teaching the truth. David was considered blameless except for the matter of Uriah. Not "blameless aside from Uriah and his 17+ other wives/concubines." You can do better than this brother. God Bless.

I am 18 yrs old and even I can see that the pastor’s argument is full of fallacies. At which point did Almighty God condemn polygamy? He regulated it through Moses in exodus, reprimands David for committing adultery, instead of asking for other wives, and God even differentiates between your mother and your father’s wife. Lastly deacons are called to be by God Almighty. Paul makes clear that they have a spiritual gift granted by the holy spirit. Not everyone has that gift and goes through training (and so aren’t deacons), some are seers; prophets; tongue interpreters. My problem is the priests of today speaking in riddles and symbolism to condemn polygamy, meanwhile the God that they serve is totally cool with it…

We don't need to use any of our great patriarchs as an "excuse" because we don't need any excuse. God designed marriage, and he allowed men to have multiple wives. There is no sin, there is no wrongdoing unless the man treats them in a manner that is sinful. God blessed Jacob with 4 wives, he opened and closed wombs in order to accomplish the lineage He desired for His people. He blessed the women for giving their handmaids to Jacob. God never commanded monogamy, or polygyny, He values marriage and covering women.

@@mrmonay What is God’s attitude toward polygamy? God is the one who brought marriage into the world. He made the first man, Adam (Genesis 1:26). He saw that it was not good for Adam to be alone. He then made a “wife” for Adam. Notice God did not make “wives” for Adam. If He had wanted Adam to have more than one wife, He would have made him more than one. One was enough. God knows best. Man in his different cultures has brought many ideas about marriage into the world. Some of man’s ideas agree with God’s plan. Some of man’s ideas do NOT agree with God’s plan. This is true with polygamy. Polygamy is a “man-made” idea. It is NOT in agreement with God’s plan for marriage. Anything that does not agree with what God has done or said is sin. God’s plan is one man and woman (wife) for life (Genesis 2). There are many examples of polygamy in the Bible. The first person to be a polygamist was Lamech (Genesis 4:19-24). He lived six generations after Adam. He was a murderer. Nothing good is said about him. Abraham was also a polygamist (Genesis 16:1-5). His wife, Sarai, was unable to have children. She gave her slave, Hagar, to be Abraham’s wife. Hagar had children for Abraham. Sarah then became jealous of Hagar. This marriage was then full of troubles. Another polygamist was Esau. He was the firstborn of Isaac and Rebekah. Esau married two Hittite women (Genesis 26:33,34). They caused much grief to Isaac and Rebekah. Polygamist marriages affect more than just the man and his wives. Gideon was a great and brave leader. He had 70 sons from many wives (Judges 8:30,31). What kind of a father could he be to 70 sons? Not the kind that God wants us to be. King Solomon had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines. His wives turned his heart away from God (1 Kings 11:3). His downfall as a king was a result of his practice of polygamy. Nowhere in the Bible can we find polygamy doing any good. Everything that is said about it shows it causes troubles. That has not changed. Today polygamy still causes many marriage problems for those who practice it. Let us see some Bible principles that teach against the practice of polygamy. (Genesis 2:23,24) says that “a man is to leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife.” God did NOT say that man was to be joined to his “wives.” He said that man was to be joined to his “wife.” That is one and only one!

This is a false teaching. God is not against polygamy. The fact that he gave adam one wife doesnt mean God was originally against polygamy. Remember Adam was alone in the Garden and God saw that it wasn't good for him to be alone so he created a help mate for him. To each and his own, just like the parable of the talents to one the master gave 5 to another the master gave 2 and to the other the master gave 1, why didn't he give each servant the same amount of talents because God gives you what you can handle, in that same story see how the one who was given the least amount of talents ended up burying the talent and not being able to turn a profit, so the master was justified in giving him fewer talents because he wasnt capable of handling more even the little that was given him was misused. Just look at how Adam was unable to handle one wife imagine the mayhem that would've been caused if Adam was given multipe wives im sure he would've led a rebellion against God. Jesus referred to Adam and Eve to explain God's distaste for divorce and not polygamy, polygamy was not in the discussion. Another example of God not just being okay with polygamy but actually making it happen was when God himself asked David why he took another man's wife when he had given him many wives, God further said that if all those wives were not enough all David had to do was to ask for more. Why do we allow Men of God to deceive us why don't we seek to learn the bible for ourselves. This war against polygamy is what has allowed for so many pregnancies out of wedlock, this is what has popularized this side chick sugar daddy wave that's taking over the world. Imagine a world where polygamy wasn't frowned upon no man woman would allow herself to be the sidechick she wouldn't be dating and sleeping with someone else's husband in secret and wouldn't be having children with another woman's husband in secret. Most of these young girls would properly seek marriage because society would be okay with it. The devil has deceived man for far too long. I'm not saying that every man should marry multiple women however if a man can afford and has the temperament to take care of multiple women then he shouldn't be prevented from doing that. God is not against marrying multiple women. He never was and he never will, God will never do something he's against.

Deuteronomy 21:15-17 God almighty answered the prayer of a woman in a polygamous marriage, and she became pregnant. God will not answer a sinful prayer? 1 Samuel 1:19-20 God almighty even answers prayers of two women in a polygamous marriage to the same man, and they both give birth to sons. Again, God will not answer a sinful prayer request! Genesis 30:15-17 Genesis 30:22-24

"God made them Male and Female". In beginning God made everything perfect including the first man and woman he made them out of the dust. Imagine if there was no sin do you think women will go through pain to birth a baby, God would probably continue creating equal number of men and female and would probably assign each man his own wife. Today they are unequal number of men to women. And Jesus was celibate. So judging from what you said, if monogamy is the only righteous act then any practice outside of it is sinful, including celibacy. Jesus in that context didn't outrightly codemn having more than one wife. He simply refers back to the original perfect mind of God and hence codemns the act of divorce ("what God joins together let no man put asunder"). If circumstances permit men to marry more than one wife and God allows it in the bible then you are not wiser than God.

But Jesus answered by bringing the discussion back to God’s prescription for marriage from the beginning (Genesis 2) as support for his teaching on divorce and marriage and adultery, which was as follows: A man who unjustly divorces his wife, and then marries another woman, commits adultery against the first woman. This is because an illegitimate divorce leaves the marriage intact in the eyes of God, which makes sex outside of that marriage, even within another marriage, adultery.

@@cbtam4333 You need to 1st understand that the law (Torah) regulates marriage. Exodus 21:10-11 KJV If he take him ANOTHER wife ; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish. [11] And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money. In essence, if a man take on another wife, the 1st wife must no be neglected, otherwise she can leave the marriage, but without the man possessions/money.

Second, the purpose for divorce is so that the woman can re marry and not be stoned to death. Deuteronomy 24:1-4 KJV When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then LET HIM WRITE her a BILL of divorcement, and GIVE IT in her HAND, and SEND HER OUT of his house. [2] And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife. [3] And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife; [4] Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the Lord : and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance. The purpose for the bill of divorcement, is to serve as a witness against the man, incase to man tries to have her killed for adultery.

Third, a reiteration of point 1. Multiple Marriage is regulated by to Torah. Deuteronomy 21:15-17 KJV If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated: [16] Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn: [17] But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his. What you may say is that the law no longer applies, and that would be very wrong. Deuteronomy states you shall not add nor take from the law, the "so called" Old Testament prophets said, concerning the Torah, if they speak not according to it, there is no light in them.

Terrible argument. What other things were tolerated because of the hardness of man’s heart? This is adding to scripture and goes against the idea of polygyny being regulated in the Torah. God was never for divorce. God sent Hagar back to Abraham, used Jacob’s wives(plural) to create the 12 tribes. God himself shows himself as married to Israel and Judah gives one a writ of divorcement. The scripture being used against polygyny is clearly about divorce, and it says so at least 4 times. God in other places mentions divorce as an ugly and violent thing. Nowhere is that said about Polygny and there is not one verse to back up this nonsense.

This man does not reason logically and is false about his arguments. Christ said Moses permitted divorce because of the hardness of the heart. The Bible does not say Moses permitted polygamy because of the hardness of the heart. And secondly the Bible was referring to bishops, and bishops are not all Christians. So you cannot apply a law directed at a specific position to all non positions. The Bible talks to all Christians and then it talked to Bishops, wives , husband's, slaves etc... You can't say the part of bishops is referring to all Christians. It can't be. This man is stating his personal believe about marriage his opinion.

@@RAWALITY The expression "one flesh" is also used to falsely claim monogamy only marriage approved by God. But "one flesh" simply refers to sexual union. When a man pays for a prostitute, he is "one flesh" with the prostitute during sex. In polygyny, husband is one flesh with each wife. But having sex with someone does not make them your spouse. A man who has sex with a woman and becomes "one flesh" with her doesn't make that woman his "one wife". Faulty assertion. Isn't it? Common sense tells us this. Yet this assertion is one of the main reasons for misinterpreting Genesis 2:24! "One flesh" is NOT "one wife" according to 1 Corinthians 6:16. What? Common sense interpretation alone should be enough to tell us that "one flesh" does not mean "one wife". But we also have God's own words to help make sure their is no misunderstanding when we read 1 Corinthians 6:16. So we can see how denominationalism or the commandments of men create misinterpretation and confusion. People who want to believe monogamous marriage is the only marriage approved by God have somehow convinced themselves that "one flesh" in Genesis 2:24 is some kind of mysterious mystical force which unites one man and one woman in marriage. THAT IS A LIE. The New Testament makes this clear in 1 Corinthians 6:16. "One flesh" merely refers to the act of sexual intercourse between a man and any woman he has sex with. So, it is GOD who joins men and women in marriage. It is not sexual relations which joins us in marriage. We can NOW see what a stretch it is to assert "one flesh" joins one man and one woman in marriage. That does NOT. It is GOD who joins men and women in marriage and it is sexual relations which joins heterosexuals as "one flesh" thereby consummating their marriages. "One flesh" is an expression ADAM spoke regarding his physical connection with Eve and it also refers to heterosexual relations God created for "one flesh" marriage intimacy. So in a polygynous marriage, a husband consummates his marriage to both wives and is "one flesh" with each wife through sexual relations. Christian husband does NOT have sex with both wives at the same time as being "one flesh" with each wife is for heterosexual marriage intimacy between each wife with husband.

@@PhotographerJohnWilson The term “one flesh” is not used simply to refer to sexual union. It is abundantly clear that the union between a man who leaves his mother and father and cleaves to his wife is fundamentally different than the union between a man and a prostitute. One is ordained by God while the other constitutes sinning against one’s own body. Any one flesh union which undermines or destroys God’s prescription for marriage between one man and one woman is not a part of God’s plan for humans and should not be assumed to be acceptable in the eyes of God, no matter how common a practice it is.

The scripture itself I'm referring to does NOT distinguish between one flesh which is ordained and another one flesh which is sinful. This is false teaching. The Bible is NOT silent on polygyny. The bible explicitly allows polygyny. This man is either lying or hasn't read the Bible. First he relies on the originalism fallacy. God also created, Adam and Eve naked, he created Eve from Adams rib. Why don't we also believe we must do those things too. After all, that's how it was in the beginning. God told David he would have given him more wives if he asked. God even calls himself a polygynist, married to both Israel and Judah.

@ajobiewebusayo282 so Jesus came to "correct" his God and Father (or if you believe in the trinity, he came in human form to correct himself)? Right. It's obvious that you think God is incompetent so he had to correct himself after allowing a "misunderstanding" for thousands of years of Hebrew history and letting people "sin" against God for generations The God I serve is consistent and there is no condemnation of a man taking more than one wife in either the "old" or "new" testament You do realise that Jesus observed the Torah that had laws and regulations on polygamy and he said that he did not come to abolish the law (Torah) Jesus was NOT talking about marriage or its structures in the passage you mentioned (monogamy/polygyny), he was talking about DIVORCE (Mark 10 verse 2) - that is the context of Jesus' answer to the Pharisees' question on DIVORCE. Look into it. No woman owns a man exclusive - the man is the head, ruler and leader of his wife so how does it make sense that a man can't take a second wife if it makes sense for his mission (that his wife helps him in) or to fulfil a command by God (see Levirate marriage).
