Does Chrono Trigger Still Hold Up Today? - Legacy Replay

Ойындар

Chrono Trigger is held as one of the best RPG's ever made, and with such a prolific Dream Team on development I can see why. But is it still impressive to this day? Let's talk about it.

Lupenpropaganda it's great. It was amazing in 1995 because everyone was up in arms over y2k. However, it's a little easy and lacks depth. There's no point to micromanage stats or loadouts. Even a game like ff8, which is very divisive, is extremely deep. So chrono trigger is amazing but it's not perfect. But if the game was extremely deep and difficult, then not as many people would love it.

Yeah. For the time it was phenomenal because no game in the early and mid 90s had a narrative and expressive story. Games weren't quite doing that yet. Games like Final Fantasy VI, EarthBound, Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Final Fantasy IV were already CLOSE doing that, but Chrono Trigger took full advantage of that and started making it a little common. Later that year and a little later, games like Yoshi's Island and Super Mario RPG started doing that while the 16 bit era/4th Generation of gaming was coming to a close. It wasn't officially common for games to have actual storytelling until the 6th generation. When games like Resident Evil, Final Fantasy VII, etc launched. Narrative and well constructed storytelling games have really evolved and become common since the mid 90s.

One thing that was especially cool was that, in addition to the sheer number of Dual Techs (seriously, every pair of characters had THREE unique combination techniques) (except poor loner Magus), there were also TRIPLE Techs that you could unlock by playing as any trio of party members for long enough (provided Crono was one of the members and Magus was not, although some trios without Crono could also learn one). These were some of the coolest effects in the game, basically a mini-cutscene showing your favorite team of characters working together in a unique way. For example, Marle might charge Crono's sword with ice magic as he jump-slashes an enemy, and then Frog shatters them with his broadsword. And there were SO MANY of these. The graphical fidelity and expressiveness of the sprites really helped to sell the effect. Even today, it's rare for a game to put in this much effort. There was also an amazing amount of lore and emotional scenes, and just enough left unsaid to keep players guessing at the untold histories of some of the characters. Truly one of the best games ever made.

A lot of the great elements of Crono Trigger were already present in one way or another in Final Fantasy 6, from amazing presentation (Final Fantasy 6 still have my favorite soundtrack overall for a Squere-Enix RPG) that was like nothing else at the time of its release, to great writing of story and characters, and a world that was open to exploration, it didn't have multiple ending though. Crono Trigger really feels like it iterated on what made FF6 such a great game, and pushed it even farther. So I wouldn't call it a lightning in a bottle as if it was some kind of a fluke or a suprise, I would call Crono Trigger a magnus opus the greatest among great work, by artists who knew exactly what they were doing and achieved greatness by perfecting their art.

We met years after (we were around 19) and, by talking about our videogames experiences, we realized that Chrono Trigger had the same impact on me Than FF VI had on him. We both had played the other game since, and, even if we both keep the first experienced as our favorite (probably because of nostalgia), we agreed that both games are really alike (and among the best games we played).

The thing I loved about chrono trigger the most was something that ProJared also mentioned, it respects your time. Just about every other rpg requires you to grind at some capacity to artificially lengthen the game *stares menacingly at secret of mana*. Yet in chrono trigger, I never felt an urgency to grind, I just went by killing every mob I saw along the way and I always felt ready for whatever challenges the game threw at me. I also wouldn't change a thing about it personally because chrono trigger is just one of those games that feels near perfect

My favorite reason this game is so well regarded is the play length. This game is twelve to fifteen hours, start to finish. There's a few optional things to do too, but the game is short for an RPG. This is what Square has forgotten. RPGs can be short and impactful and if the rest of the package is there, the game can be legendary. Final Fantasy 7 Rebake But Only Part 1 But It Doesn't Say That On The Box wastes so much time doing nothing until the game is padded to 25-30 hours but nothing happens.

One thing I liked was how it was a gradual journey to understand what was happening and how they could save the world. A lesser game would have had the villain outright reveal himself at the beginning, with us traveling through time to stop him. But in Chrono Trigger, even after you see the Day of Lavos recording, you don't really know what Lavos is, or where it came from. Instead, we gradually build our understanding of both the past and future as we journey through time, with Zeal in particular being a big surprise. So the time travel is more than just a gimmick or mechanic in the game: it's at the heart of the journey.

I think this game is the best game of all time. I played it in my childhood, and I never got past the Cathedral. I eventually gave up on it, but when i popped in the cartridge 5 or 6 years later, it felt great to be back in the adventure. The fact that it doesn't hold your hand the whole way really made me feel a sense of freedom, or the fact that I can do it at my own pace. My favorite game of all time, alongside Breath of the Wild.

Although I'm a '90s kid, I missed Chrono Trigger when it first came out, and didn't play it until a buddy loaned it to me in college in the late '00s. It instantly became one of my favorite games ever. There's so much to love about it: the characters and their respective arcs/sidequests, the soundtrack and its use of recurring riffs (I'm thinking in particular of certain characters whose connection to each other isn't immediately obvious, but their themes hint at the existence of said connection), and the sheer optimism of the plot. I enjoy the globetrotting adventure feel, with each chapter having its own villain, with a larger, overarching villain looming behind everything.

Chrono Trigger still 100% holds up. Also, I backed Sea of Stars on Kickstarter and got access to a demo that allows you to play about 30-60 minutes of the game. Feels like a cross between Super Mario RPG/Paper Mario and Chrono Trigger. A lot of fun and the combat has a lot of layers that makes it more challenging than I thought. Has every ingredient to be a great game.

Upon watching Chuggaaconroy's LP of this game and then playing it myself, I can say without a doubt that this is one of the most timeless JRPGs of old and one of my top favorites in the genre alongside Xenoblade Chronicles, Ys VIII, Dragon Quest XI, and The World Ends With You. It's kinda crazy that a game as old as Chrono Trigger still holds up incredibly well, especially considering that I never actually grew up with the game myself.

Hey Snoman HUGE fan, I love learning about what makes video games good or bad because of you, and now I've started subconsciously thinking critically about video games when I play them. For future games to cover, I know(imho), that Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Tetris NES, and Mario Galaxy all hold help well, and SSBB might be interesting because it's honestly a mix of amazing and terrible ideas for the devs. Tetris NES would be cool as well because it holds up SO well and has a huge legacy(I, a 15 year old, am playing it competitively 35 years after it's release), and it could be interesting to see how simplicity can make games more memorable.

Oh man. I still have strong nostalgia for this game. I played CT at a time just after an international move, having to say goodbye to all my friends and things I knew well and move back to America was very hard for me to do. (Not that I had much of a choice) So playing through CT and saving the world only to have to say goodbye forever to most of the friends you found along the way was very bittersweet. It's a strong feeling that wells up inside of me each and every time I think about it or hear the music from the game. Never before or since has a video game, anime, or TV show touched me so profoundly with its simple story and characters. I honestly think this game changed my life, even if it was only in a small way. I certainly would like another game or a good remake of Chrono Trigger, but I have serious doubts that the present Square-Enix could even do it right. *(although I did enjoy Trials of Mana 2019, but I absolutely hated FF7R)

This is an INCREDIBLE series idea! It's wonderful to see that you had such a great time with Chrono Trigger, honestly it's a game that ought to be in game design TEXTBOOKS for the sheer level of polish the game delivered oh so many years ago. I've picked up and played every iteration and remake the game has received and I learn more of the little quirks that make the experience wonderful each and every time. But to say that you've only experienced JRPGs from the FF and Mario Monogatari series opens worlds of opportunities! A look at the "Tales of" Studios with remakes of the likes of Tales of Symphonia, an iconic title of the Gamecube would be incredible. The "Tales of" games span over 15 games with a tremendous legacy of game design grounded in a comprehensive blend of RPG character design and precise technique combos in fluid combat scenarios. If you've never played them before, it's something well worth experiencing first hand. Alternatively if you're looking for another exploration of turn based tactical grid games Nippon Ichi Software's Disgaea series has been going strong for 17 years (plus a few extra if you include La Pucelle Tactics and Rhapsody!) Unlike the Advanced Wars, Starcrafts/Warcrafts, and Civilization games defined by armies of generic soldiers to hurl at problems, NIS games inject enormous amounts of charm into each of their characters and let their personal struggles guide narratives to the wackiest extremes imaginable. But perhaps it's worth pausing to consider that while a retrospective on games with a huge legacy makes for interesting content, I hope that you keep your perspectives open to things not as mainstream as well. Chrono Trigger is legitimate candidate for best JRPG ever made and for a huge number of people it ranks as one of their favorite games of all time (it ranks at #3 for me). But for every Ocarina of Time that gets a thousand accolades, there's an Alundra that goes unmentioned despite being a masterpiece in its own right. For every Seiken Densetsu remake there's a Secret of Evermore that set the foundations for Golden Sun long before the games were conceived. For every Final Fantasy 7 there's a Grandia that pioneered the clumsy voice acting dubbing that would become iconic of the late 90s and early 2000s of video games and anime. I hope that this series of yours branches out far and covers not only the games people herald as legendary, but also the ones that SHOULD be considered legends in their own right. Can't wait to see what comes from this series, keep your options broad and keep the discussions going about games of all kinds to inspire gamers new and old to experience new things!

Fun fact, you can also get the Dream Team Ending if you defeat Lavos the first time you battle him in the ocean palace.. (not easy because his "Destruction rain from heaven" is buffed, and you need to be tabbed up to survive the initial volley (I think even then I needed Prism Dresses, and safe helms to barely survive) , which is probably why not many people know about that)... You also have one opportunity to fight Lavos solo (After Marle leaves the party during the teleporter demonstration but instead of the left teleporter, Chrono goes in the right teleporter) (i forgot if Lucca stops you from using the right teleporter after Marle disappears) ... You can also ROM hack/gameshark to change Chrono into Magus and so that he fight Lavos solo to recreate the DS remake's secret ending...

Chrono Trigger is absolutely one of the best games of all time. It requires basically zero grinding unless you REALLY want to. The story is so full for being so short. I personally believe that a smaller crew of playable characters is better than hundreds because it makes them all infinitely more important to the story. And I ADORE the battle system. The whole Tech system is something that more games need to do because it makes character selection and experimentation that much more important. When I found out that Frog and Ayla has a tech combo that was one of the best healing spells in the game, it drastically changed my party lineup from that point forward. I only wish that they would’ve allowed for more double and triple techs without Chrono and including Magus (and without the need of special accessories). If I could add anything to this already perfect game, that would probably be the only thing.

My story with this game is actually quite similar to yours. Sadly, the game was never officially released in Europe back in the day. It wasn’t until much later that we got the DS port, in the late aughts. I played through it and I could not stop it. It quickly rose up to the top as one of my favorite games of all time. Zero biases, as I had never played it or even heard much about it before. It just... works. Thus, I would not change a single thing about it. It’s absolutely perfect as it is.

Thanks for creating this. Although I may have sensed it on some level, I never quite realized just how "free" _Chrono Trigger_ feels compared to its contemporaries until now. One of my favourite aspects of _Chrono Trigger_ is its masterful pacing. Right from the start, the game makes you feel that every location that you go to is important, and shows you how it's relevant to the overall narrative. There are still games being made today - to say nothing of the era it was created - that are bogged down with filler, and don't have the same level of tightness that this JRPG from 1995 accomplished. To me, that is absolutely astounding.

I'm enjoying this series and looking forward to whatever you make. It's hard to know what you want for recommendations. With only two videos in the series, what you are wanting to accomplish isn't clear. But a game (and genre) you probably haven't thought about and should consider is Tactics Ogre. Very influential, and not well known in the US despite the amazing critical reception it got. Other people will tell you Final Fantasy Tactics, but Tactics Ogre feels more "of the era" even though FFT was a contemporary of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. I'd love to see you do Earthbound / Mother 2 if you are going to to another JRPG. But the "serious" comparison to make if you want to look at JRPGs is with Final Fantasy VI and Dragon Quest V. As far as early "action RPGs" there's Seiken Densetsu 3 which wasn't available in an official English-language version until recently, but was very influential in Japan. Depending on how far back you want to go, Ys I & II are worth considering. If you want to go *really* far back, the original Sid Meier's pirates (DOS era) was probably the first "open world" game. Let me know what you think of these, and I may be able to tune my recommendations once I know your thinking better. That said, there are a ton of "gimme" games (Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, anything on Wikipedia's "Games Considered best list). And you could just take the most influential titles that defined genres or franchises and try them. But I hope I suggested a few that are outside of your usual wheelhouse that you might find interesting. Edit: when I said that Tactics Ogre felt more "of the era" I couldn't put my finger on what it was. But I can now. There was a qualitative shift in video games once optical disks became the norm. Design constraints fundamentally changed. So even though the early PlayStation and N64 games were made at the same time, they were operating under different constraints. So the N64 games feel more contiguous with the older style, and the PS games are more of a hard break into new territory. So maybe that's the "line" being drawn here? You are looking at games from an era where designers were forced to worry about the size of the game and thus had more editorial pressure to squeeze every bit of game value out of each bit.

I know it's a few days late, but in case you see it, a couple retro game recommendations from the SNES era! Secret of Mana - Also very free, action RPG with multiplayer (if you want) and some really unique spell mechanics. The story is also fantastic and doesn't have much padding. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - I'm pretty sure you've played this before, but it DEFINITELY deserves to be replayed since it's practically the direct genetic ancestor of the Paper Mario series.

I didn't finish the game personaly. The game has great qualities for sure, the music is incredible, and the universe is charming. But even if you have that feeling of freedom, the game is mostly linear, which is not a problem. What's more problematic to me is, first, the fighting system which is pretty basic. It gives you the impression you have to make strategic choices and sometimes it does. But most of the time, you end up smashing the same attacks again and again. I also feel that the characters you're playing lack personality. They seem really cool at first, but as soon as they join your team, you never really interact with them again. That's a feature I really love in some of the dragon quest games. It's the possibility to hear what one of your team mates has to say in a particular situation, simply by pressing a button. That really ads a lot. Where I dropped the ball though, is when you have to make your way into that giant floating forteress. Not that it's hard, it just gets really, REALLY repetitive. Das jus me tho

I have a somewhat special history with this game. It was the first RPG I ever played, and one of the games that "taught" me english. I'm not an english native speaker, so we used to play games without understanding anything. Most of the time, there was nothing to understand, we just grabbed the controller and played Mario, Crash, fighting games, racing games, spyro... This game you had to understand what was going on. Although I didn't understand shit, I fell in love with the charm and played it anyway, figuring things out slowly as I learned english. I think I never finished it back then. At some point I got Legend of Legaia (another hidden gem of the ps era, btw I was playing the ps version of chrono trigger), but someone gave a walkthrough in portuguese (my language) and my father printed it out to me so I could play the game. Ah, good old times... After finishing it, I went back to Chrono Trigger and asked a friend for a walkthrough, and instead, he gave me a hacked translated ROM in portuguese of the snes version that I could play in an emulator. It was very well translated. Ah, good old times indeed... I never forgot those two games. At the same time, I kept struggling with hot new MMOs rising in popularity. I eventually learned to hold my own on english and tackled Legend of Legaia again so I could understand the story. The walkthrough just told me what to do, but didn't explain things too much. But you can guess things by the emotion in characters' faces and animations, cutscenes, the music, recurring villains... Anyway, I played it again and lots of things I didn't understand the first time made more sense. I think I did replayed Chrono Trigger in english at the time too, eventually. I can say confidently that Chrono Trigger has a better story and characters, but Legend of Legaia had interesting mini games and a cool battle system that I've never seen again in a video game. Ah, good old times...

Two things. 1: It coined the term New Game+. While not the first to do it, it did it so well with such a snappy name that it became industry standard naming. 2: You can get the Easter Egg ending organically at the Ocean Palace where Crono [Spoilers]. Lavos can be defeated there, but it is very difficulty and requires a lot of grinding and smart play.
