Was I WRONG About Chrono Trigger?!

Fortunately, there's a very small list of JRPGs I've covered that I'd like to hit the "redo button" on. One of them is Chrono Trigger where I felt in my initial coverage that I skimmed over some of the core aspects of the game a bit too much as the channel was still finding its footing in what it wanted to be. So, today, I'd like to give Chrono Trigger a second run through and see how it fares in my return playthrough.

@@jonathansoko1085 I recently played Crono Cross too. I avoided it for a long time because I heard it was a terrible sequel. I would say if you want a sequel to Chrono Trigger then it’s very disappointing but if you just want a great JRPG then it’s a must play. Best thing to do in my opinion is shake off the pretense that it has anything to do with Chrono Trigger and you’ll have a great time.

This is one reason why I love your channel bro. You're not trying to be a dick about things, but you're also not trying to ignore flaws about things. Yes, Chrono Trigger is an absolute masterpiece and by many accounts deserves the 10/10 reputation. But it does have small little 'flaws', because everyone is different at the end of the day. Its why it tends to be nitpicks rather than complete flaws. I 'm not going to sit here and pretend the game is perfect, but I sure as hell will recommend it to every single human being I can.

@TheErojean It's from an 4th Gen console. The NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, N64, PS1 and other consoles from 4th to 5th gen consoles don't have voice acting and cinematic cutscenes because it wasn't fully optimized into early 2D and 3D games yet. We don't get all of that till the 6th Gen consoles with PS2, Xbox, GameCube and later consoles where it can now fully customize vouce acting & cinematic cutscenes. So it's very unfair to say something like that because it was from the time before all those became an thing than. It's not an big flawed nor they don't feel dated. It's just how it was before technology evolved. Sorry if I' sounding like an jerk here. But the way u said that is very unfair to compare cause it is very subjective. There's no fact about it.

I love the unique features with how the characters collaborate together with different combo techs, this really encourages you to try different character groups. I would really love an Octapath Traveler style visual remake but I also partly want a FF7 style remake too. But that's be riskier is potentially losing some of its gameplay charm. So, even though its greedy, I would live to get both. That way, everyone's happy. But it needs to be done, so many people are missing out on this because it was before their time and they dont want to go back to an SNES title. Kids these days are missing out.

On the other hand, having played this game for the first time after it had already been rereleased in other systems, I did not find the robot factory confusing to navigate at ALL 😂. Also I really don't understand what the point would be of remaking this Octopath style. It would look slightly different with the 2d art with depth, but still not convince anyone who doesn't like old games or turn based games. Octopath style is GREAT for making games that are supposed to look and feel like old games, but for remaking old games? I don't consider it enough of a difference to be worth it.

Played this game for the first time back in 1996ish when I was in early middle school. I liked games, but had never played any RPG before. This game completely hooked me on JRPG's. It fundamentally altered my gaming identity. It led to me discovering FFVI (branded "3" at the time in the US), and a pure Square fanboy was born. To this day, I still buy every mainline FF game (aside from the direct sequels... well, I bought X-2 and decided never again to buy a direct FF sequel out of regret and disappointment... though I also dislike FFXIII, so not buying XIII-2 was a no-brainer). I've spent years in both FFXI and then FFXIV and have maintained my FFXIV sub for nearly ten years (minus one break I took back before HW). I say this only to tell people how much Chrono Trigger affected the course of my gaming life. It's truly a magnificent game and in the top 3 GOAT games imo. Not just JRPG or RPG, but games in general. It's damn near perfect.

That first Factory Conveyor Belt can be annoying, but at the end of the battle loop it drops you off at the destination you were trying to dodge robots to get to, so it's not like you have to do it over and over to progress. The Ocean Palace Elevator sequence can be quite long, especially if you accidentally send it back up, but the Ocean Palace is effectively the Disk One End Dungeon and it's supposed to be bigger and tougher than the ones that came before it. I agree with you about how the game needs to be looked at through a modern lens in addition to from within it's original context; I've seen several streamers playing for the first time have trouble with sections because they lacked information the game expected them to have, because they were playing through going as quickly as possible from plot-point to plot-point and not exploring the map and talking to all the NPCs - best example: struggling during the Masa&Mune fight due to the Massive Vortex Attack, because they didn't stop in the nearby town and so failed to talk to the one guy in the tavern who tells you that vortex energy can be disbursed with a Wind Slash. I feel like more modern games wouldn't make that information so easily skip-able, and would either add it in additional places (in dialogue for other NPCs, maybe a readable sign somewhere directly on the approach to the battle) or even putting it on screen during the combat.

I played Chrono Trigger for the first time last week and I loved it, but people need to chill the hell out when gushing about this game. I've seen too many people make it sound like a life altering experience so I think people go into it expecting their minds to be blown when that's not really what happens. In addition to its influence, the reason this game is so special is because of how consistent it is. I honestly think it might be the most well rounded game I've ever played as it does so much very well and only really has some minor flaws IMO. You touched on this a bit, but it doesn't have those JRPG caveats that we see very often today like boated length, bad pacing, tropey anime style characters, random encounters, and borderline nonsensical stories. I don't like most JRPGs for the aforementioned reasons, and even with many of the ones I do like I have significant critiques, but Chrono Trigger doesn't have any of those issues. Hell I HATE the ATB system, which feels to me like navigating the Windows XP start menu while being slapped every 5 seconds, but the way Chrono Trigger does it is unique and interesting enough that I found the combat tolerable. Once I realized that Chrono Trigger was just a really well made game and not literally the best thing that ever existed, I really enjoyed it. It's my favorite JRPG and I don't see that changing any time soon. Also, for those of you who haven't played it yet but are planning to, the optional content at the end of the game is some of the best it has to offer and it's where like 90% of the character development happens so don't skip it!

CT is still to this day my favorite RPG game I've ever played. The game still holds up remarkably well and it's probably the one game that doesn't need an overhaul remake. If it does get an remake somehow, than I wouldn't mind if it goes on an Octopath Traveler like visuals and stuff. But keep the game original design & charm to the game as it was. Don't screw it up. Otherwise, I would prefer an port of the Steam version to Chrono Trigger more than anything.

I'm late to this video, I realize that, but I have to comment. I love Chrono Trigger. I played my original SNES cartridge until my characters hit max level and played it again when I later purchased it on steam. I have a wood carving replica of the cartridge on my wall and I still passively listen to the soundtrack sometimes. Having said that, the first time I played that damn factory I got stuck for HOURS. It was a fricken nightmare and while it wasn't as bad the next few times I played it through, I totally agree it sucked the first time through.

Square needs to do another dream team and smash that chrono based game for a trifecta. Chronocross was amazing but it feels incomplete without a modern chrono to tie them all in.

I was a Genesis kid so I didn't have an SNES back then but a few of my friends did, and Chrono Trigger was one of the standouts that I'd watch them play. The first time I played through it for myself was in the Final Fantasy Chronicles collection on PS1, which wasn't mentioned in the video. Think I'll try and track down a DS copy if I don't already have it, I'm not sure exactly what I have on DS but it's not that many. I tried buying it on the SNES like 2 years ago, it was slightly cheaper than the market value was, but not by much, I'm talking like $175 instead of $225-250 or something. When I received it I was immediately clued off that it was a fake, took it apart and confirmed. After a little resistance from the seller I got them to take it back & refund me, and they deleted that profile. I honestly probably would have been ok with a repro if the listing was honest about that fact (the listing went out of it's way to assure that it was authentic & original) and if it were significantly cheaper; there is no reason for it to have been priced as high as it was other than preying on collectors thinking that they're getting a slight deal. Of course they claimed they were ignorant, but I looked at some prior feedback and they've done this scam a few times but were able to hide the bad reviews under some options.

Regarding a Chrono Trigger remake, not to rain on anyone's parade, but if you read up on it you'll see that there are some pretty big challenges in doing so. Same with another sequel to follow Chrono Cross. Yuji Horii has said in the past that he's not interested in returning to the series. This is significant because his company (Armor Project) owns the scenario/story of the game, while Square Enix owns the IP, so any remake would require cooperation of both parties. Yasunori Mitsuda has also said that there are a lot of politics with the series, so.. I dunno. There would also be massive expectations for a remake, so I'd imagine they would want at least some members of the OG staff involved, but Horii is busy with DQ, Sakaguchi has pretty much said he's retired, Kitase is busy with all things FF, etc. Even more than a remake, I'd want a new game in the series if anything. It would be amazing to see them resurrect Chrono Break, which Square Enix trademarked way back when they actually wanted to make another sequel after Cross, but due to disagreement with management, it was shut down.. :(

The Derelict Factory is definitely my least favorite dungeon, too, for exactly the reasons you describe. Thankfully, you can skip most of it if you know the code. Strangely enough, I always do the whole dungeon anyway because I like the game as a whole, which makes the one flawed part more tolerable.

  • @Xavire1603
    @Xavire16036 ай бұрын

You're not wrong some of the dungeons can be a little confusing or annoying, but just a little, never goes over the line. And i think that is by design. The same goes for some boss fights are quite long, but just a little. Enough to feel like a challenge but not enough to really frustrate the player. But i totally get it, some puzzle designs show they are really old. And though they are not terrible or overwhelming, it can take some time to figure out what to do. My personal "not favorite" puzzle is in the factory where Motherboard is, where robots are created, at the late game. That part where you have to get Robo into the machine so he got charged with electricity and then run to the next door took me ages the first time. Ages being like 30 minutes tbh. But still. It can pause the otherwise excellent pacing of the game that is for sure.

As someone who grew up playing FF2/4, Chrono Trigger & Mario RPG I love that era of JRPGs, but find only Chrono Trigger & Mario RPG to hold up best due to not having random battles. Thankfully the pixel remaster exists for Final Fantasy 1-6 now. That said, I much prefer the tighter pacing of that era of JRPG compared to the behemoth 100 hour games these days. I'm not against an engaging 100+ hour game (loved Elden Ring), but I can't get into the Persona series due to having so much downtime for conversations. While I agree Chrono Trigger isn't perfect (no game is), for me it's a s close to perfect of a game I've ever played. Most of that is around mechanics & general pacing, but the issues you described I simply didn't have even on my first playthrough as a kid. Was that because I bought the guide with the game & used it liberally? Probably. However like you mentioned, it now is engrained in me so I don't see some of the issues a newer player may encounter. Keep in mind it was of the era where JRPGs were basically requiring guides to see everything within the game & avoid getting stuck for younger players (I was 9 when it came out).

There's games from last generation that already aged poorly. Chrono Trigger is going to be 30 in 2025. 30 YEARS OLD. That's how old I am. And the game just aged like the finest wine. Playing on a DS is just a delicacy. It's supper easy to get hooked, the writing is phenomenal and the setting can be even immersive. I played Chrono Trigger for the first time in 2020 with the crapy Steam release and even then I got hooked.
