Chrono Trigger 25TH ANNIVERSARY Review and Retrospective SNES

Ойындар

This is by far the most ambitious video I’ve made and I’m excited to share it with everyone. For this video I mined dozens of written and filmed interviews and read everything I could get my hands on. I tried to find images and clips that are rarely used and I acquired rare pieces like the formation arts figurines to hopefully make a video worthy of Chrono Trigger.
**If you enjoyed this video please help support the channel by SHARING it with others. It’s free for you, and helps me TREMENDOUSLY! I GREATLY appreciate your support and I hope you enjoy the show!**
As someone who's fascinated by history and works professionally as an educator, it is very satisfying to create videos that merge my passion for classic games with my career as a History teacher. These Retrospectives are a passion for me and it's my sincere hope that everyone who watches will have fun, reminisce, be entertained, and learn something along the way. I hope you enjoy this Chrono Trigger Review and Retrospective.

...and to answer the questionsI posed... Chrono Trigger is my favorite RPG and definitely makes my Top 5 RPGs and Top 20 games over all! My favorite character is Frog followed closely by Magus and his incredible back story. I REALLY wanted to talk about his story in this video, but did't want to ruin it for anyone.

I mean, people in their 30s are the ones who grew up with this game and the golden era of 90s JRPG on the SNES and PS One. I believe it's the reason we're constantly complaining about the state of most games released these days, they're just not as impactful.

@Skip Passover People replaying it, again and again, makes it timeless. This game has had so many rereleases it's crazy. I would think that kind of devalues your argument. I like Skyrim. I've played it a lot but it's nowhere near as good as Chrono Trigger. The story just can't compare, not even by a stretch.

I am convinced that if this game HAD made it to the "SNES CD" or if it had been developed for N64 or Playstation that it actually wouldn't have been as good, visually. The 16-bit visuals give is a great look, yet also require just enough imagination to make it look even better in your head. FInal Fantasy VII, as great as it is, just looks pretty bad by comparison. There are a few animations or effects in Chrono Trigger that could perhaps have been improved upon with technology, but I think if it were on later hardware they would have just tried to make it more "modern."

I envy them as well. I just finally beat chrono trigger, I've played it several times before, once on Ps1 then again on DS, for some reason, I never really stayed hooked after about 1/2- 3/4ths into the game, maybe a bit more. It's not even that long of a game. While I love the game, now that I've already played so many other games, a lot of which that rival Chrono trigger, there's things that I miss that it just didn't have back then in the technology. that said, It aged really well overall. Felt the same when I went back and played Grandia recently. suikoden 2 as well. I love chrono triggers music and always gets stuck in my head, but I love orchestrated music so that music usually hits harder for me. The songs are orchestrated on youtube and I love them, but different when not in-game haha. When I heard Scars of Time from chrono cross when I first heard it as a kid, I was blown away. So, it's sometimes hard to go back when you know advancements have been made. It had the same thing done to FF pixel remaster games and I love that soundtrack, so it's not so much just graphics for me but the game in general.

Never mind Google Groups which didn’t come into existance until 2001. I’m sure what you found was the contents of some usenet thread that got sucked up into Google’s vortex years later, chewed up and spat out under the Google Groups moniker. But I’m not going to nitpick over some tiny technicality in what must have taken dozens of hours to put together. It is quite simply a fantastic video! Well researched, excellently structured and narrated and oozing with passion and love for this beautiful game. I enjoyed it immensely! Thank you so much for this.

@@EndlessDream No man... there was a game called *_Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun_* that had a far superior user interface to other D&D games of the time... which, that alone, translated into a much better user experience. Not to mention, it also has great music... meaning music that pairs well with the mood of your surroundings & the environment. Altho, it didn't have a huge expansive story like *_Chrono Trigger._* But I would argue that not every RPG needs one... as there are different audiences to cater to... Like, people who don't necessarily know (when they sit down) how long they'll be able to play... so for these people, I would argue, that being able to quickly jump and play & experience the world is a bonus... whereas, on the other hand, if you're playing an RPG with more story, it would be extremely annoying to be interrupted in the middle of a story sequence. Plus, *_D&D WOTES_* also has re-play value, because you can replay thru with a different party.

It’s crazy how awesome games have been for most of my 37 years. Chrono Trigger isn’t just one of the best games ever made it’s one of the best time travel stories ever told. Just like Mass Effect is one of the best science fiction universes ever made with lore and detail that match, if not surpass staples of the genre. Games aren’t film or books, but these and others have proven that an engaging and interactive experience can be just as powerful. There’s nothing in the world that makes my mind paint the pictures of an entire world born out of imagination than The Lord of the Rings. There’s nothing in the world that makes me yearn for knowledge of the secrets of the universe and it’s mysteries than Mass Effect. There is nothing in the world more bittersweet than a bi-annual run of Chrono Trigger having yo say goodbye again for a while, though I almost always see or do something I hadn’t before. What SNES game made in before 1996 can you replay dozens of times for 25 years and still not experience everything it has to offer?

I never had to put it down, and it begged to be replayed when beat. FF is a jarring experience even at it’s height apparently.

@@locke103 The additional content in the DS version isn't really all that important to the overall experience. A lot of the new areas to explore are pretty much endless fetch quests with some added battling. It's sort of something you would experience best if you revisited it throughout the story rather than right before you finish the game. As for the secret boss, it is certainly a really difficult fight but the storytelling/exposition that follows is mostly valuable if you're trying to find connections between the two games. It throws a bone to the player, but it doesn't necessarily do a ton to explain things we haven't already necessarily known, it's more a nod to the connections shown in Chrono Cross. Play the extra content if you're a mega CT/CC nerd like me, don't sweat it if you just want to experience the original game. There's a fun monster-training side-game thing which is mostly not useful but a fun diversion if you need a temporary distraction here and there. I didn't hate it. There are good quality of life features in the DS version, including some updated localization that helps the original translation. There are however some rebalances that may make people feel it's not authentic. Nothing game-breaking, but some items and values might not be what you remember if you're a purist.

Loved that you showed Akira's Toriyama's artwork in a cool way. Best retrospective of CT on YT.

I played Chrono trigger when i was on middle school, every day arrived at home, did my homework and all afternoon till midnight I played Chrono trigger, unlocked all endings, all items at max capacity, all characters max stats and lvl. It was such a joy to play this game. Sometimes i just put the far away times or wind scene sound from the game itself and fall asleep with that. it will have a special place in my heart for being the best videogame i have ever played. The memories from that time will be with me until my time comes...

I guess it depends on your own taste of an opinion of what you think is the best. But yeah. Chrono Trigger may not be for everyone. But that doesn't change the fact that this game is not only one of the best JRPG'S out there, but one of the greatest games of all time. Is it the best? Maybe. But it's certainly lived up to it's aspectation tremendously well and it doesn't look like it's going away anytime soon.

Chrono Trigger is, and will always be my favorite game. It always takes me to a state of euphoria. I’ve played through countless memorable, and amazing games over the years, but none have ever had the same impact CT has had on me.

One thing is to create a game that is able to make your eyes tear, another is to make a game retrospective that does the same. This really says something about the game and your ability to present it. If there is a retrospective worthy of this game out there, this is the one*period*

Love this game. I still have my copy I bought 25 years ago from Kay-Bee toy stores from a local mall I frequented in my early teens...both gone, but not forgotten just like this game. One of the best games ever made.

An amazing video. Very well done! I recently started replaying it after not doing so in many many years and I was instantly transported back to that wonderful time in the 90s when I would come home from school to play. My friends and I would discuss different endings and little variations to scenes depending on who was there. Your hard work on this video shows and I appreciated it very much. If I could like the video more than once, I would.
