Dodge Viper ACR vs Porsche GT2 RS

These cars generate such similar lap times it really depends on the track for which will yield a faster lap time; however, they achieve their lap times in very different ways.
Somewhere like Laguna Seca the GT2 RS will win out on the straights, Sonoma the Viper would crush the GT2 RS with the tight and smaller track. All makes for good fun. Even at this Thunderhill 3-mile track the Viper was faster on the first half and the GT2 RS faster on the second half.
Viper won this one, which car is your favorite?

Never had the chance to drive the GT2RS but TBH it’s a piece of fine engineering *well done Porsche*. As a viper owner POV, I’ve been tracking the car since 2020 and lemme be honest with you, I guess I need years to say yes I’ve reached the limit of it. The more you drive it, the more she surprises you. How is the OIL TEMP after three or four laps?

Not that it was slow in stock form, but the new power plant transformed the power delivery and upper end. It literally unleashed the beast within.

Would love to see what a 9.0 H/C Viper ACR with track setup dialed in would do. I saw a vid of one running with a Senna with no problem😮😮. Would also love to see Jeff knock some laps out in a Manthey version of this GT2 RS. That would be an epic face off between the modded Snake and d the modded Weissach missile. Hard to pick against anything Manthey on a track but I’m sure it would make for great vid.

Right??? Literally two of my favorite cars. I know I've mentioned in the past, but I think the MR package does a ton for the GT2 RS and would make it more track focused like the ACR-E. The regular GT2 RS without the MR package will beat it on circuits with longer straights and by using the crazy grippy Cup2R (not used in this test). That tire alone compared to the Kuhmo would have likely swapped who won . Would be sweet to see modded ACR vs GT2 RS MR. I would be on board with that test! I have my eyes set on testing the new GT3 RS MR now, since Sonoma and Thill don't give too big of an advantage for high HP. Would be very interesting to see.

I have a 9L ACR. It takes a lot of skill to drive the car fast or to even put the power down it will take me some time to trust it. It makes 600tq at 3k rpm lol, so coming out of corners is crazy if you are not smooth. The viper needs a driver to be fast. Porsche is amazing that it could make average driver as fast as a pro(that's why its impressive how good it is out the box). Thanks for the amazing detailed video!

Eeeergh @@thesnake5849that's not quite true. I spend a lot of time at the track and see some people struggling with the 911, for some the car is not intuitive they get into problems in corners. For others it is and they produce great times nearly right away. It really depends on driver, the car is capable but finding the limit or even being fast doesn't happen for most people.

My experience is that most folks say in general it is harder to drive the ACR Viper on track (at a fun pace), but more people have a harder time extracting everything out of a GT2 RS, also if you turn off T/C on both I think more struggle with GT2 RS. The MR package helps a lot. I personally find both to have fun and unique challenges. Likely time with either will get you comfortable with how it handles and you'll be loving it.

  • @DonLee1980
    @DonLee1980Ай бұрын

oh wow, this is a very rollercoaster kind of track and with a ton of sweeping corners. tho they may have the "same tire" brand, the Viper wears much wider boots, so that definitely had an advantage, in addition to the extra aero, the ACR takes this course more like a race car, with slower top end speeds but higher minimum speeds, better braking and earlier on the power.

Curious why they didn’t do a 9.0 build on the viper. It’s probably because it’s a stroker build and more often than not rpm is your friend which stroker motors sneak into bad piston to rod ratios with extreme piston speeds.

There's plenty of 9L cars running more rpm than stock 8.4L. It's just shy of a 1/4" increase in stroke. Not into any bad geometry territory. A heads/cam 8.4 is about a 100hp increase alone. They respond very well to mods. Didn't really need any to best the gt2 though.

Wow the GT2RS is a LOT more of a handful in the corners requiring much greater corrections with the steering wheel. The ACR is much more planted in the corners, enjoying its greater downforce. It looked to me like the GT2RS needed more downforce. Well there is always the non street legal GT2RS Club Sport. At a minimum I would want the Manthey kit if I were regularly tracking the GT2RS. I have a track day booked at Red Bull Ring in October with Manthey Racing with the GT2RS Club Sport. Watching this video I am even happier I am going with the Club Sport, dedicated track version of the car with the slick tires and greater aero.

  • @TurninTrackOut

@@TurninTrackOut yes when I see a very skilled driver, have to use that amount of wheel and spin the car you know it’s a handful to handle and doesn’t have enough aero for that level of power. I’m sure the experts at Manthey racing tamed the beast a lot. As for me, I chose the GT2RS CS over the 992 GT3 Cup car for the MR track day because I have a feeling that the club sport won’t be offered to rent for the day by MR for that much longer as a 991 generation. i’m also pretty confident that as a dedicated track version with much less weight , slicks and more aero a lot of the issues you felt on the track at the limit in the 2RS will be much less in the club sport. but I am sure, not quite as light and nimble, or having as much aero as a 992 cup car. The three days after that are with the regular 992 GT3RS. I’m sure that will feel quite civilized compared to the 2RS club sport lol

You think the kumho acr is faster than r7? I found the 3r to be faster than kumho acr and the r7 to match or slightly faster than 3r. Granted the first session is always the winning tire so weather rules and makes testing very difficult. A7 faster than all but non dot slick. Would love to hear your thoughts in more detail. I'll likely never run cup 2r. I'm a top 5 time attack driver. In good weather on a top tire usually set lap record or really close at nasa, scca, or whatever series im racing. Not bragging just reference on how you answer cause if someone asked me which tire was fastest my first thought would be whichever you like cause anyone asking likely not fast enough for it to matter. You're in a unique position cause only a handful of people have tested these tires back to back that are fast enough to find a difference. On fresh kumho I did a 1:46.5 in 72 degree at Buttonwillow. The following morning I did 1:45.3 on fresh 3r. It was 55. So would the acr matched the 145 in better condition?? idk. Also I ripped the inside edge of kumho after 1 session. I still have one heat cycle rears and could buy new fronts. Car c7z with aero and 650 wheel on mcs 1000lbs front and 1100 rear.

Oh lot's of good info and questions. I love thinking about this. Good call out that Hoosier R7 are really grippy that first session then fall off fast. My experience is that the Cup2R is fastest then right behind is A7 then Kuhmo/R7 very similar (on Viper) then Supercar 3R. My only thought is are you running the viper specific Kuhmo? It is very different compound than every other size even. Second thought is they really designed it to work perfectly with the ACR. It may just be on the ACR specifically it is faster. We found it to be 0.2 seconds faster than a R7 in our testing. I didn't drive the R7 when it was new though, so it may have already fallen behind. The supercar3r is my favorite tire because of the cost and they make a lot of sizes and wears so nicely. Still grippy. Cup2R is amazing on newly paved tracks where it won't wear too fast, but most tracks it will be done after a handful of sessions. By far the fastest street tire. I wonder how close it and A7 are, haven't compared on the same car. A7 so amazing for outright couple laps just like a real medium slick, but then fall off after a few laps from heat since they are an autocross tire. I'm rambling, but wonder your thoughts on the Kumo points I have above. Would be most ideal to go test them all same day. I do recall the R7's starting faster than the SC3r at the first two sessions then about even the 3rd then slower beyond that. SC3r wears very nicely.

@TurninTrackOut amazing reply! For the kumhos I've only tried acr specific kumho in 295 25 19 front on 11" wheel and 355 30 19 on a 12.5. Agree definitely different compound than the v720 or v730. You have a point about the kumho acr being a better match for acr viper specifically vs a heavier c7z with different weight distribution. That alone could account for the time difference. Although this conversation does make me want to give the kumho acr another shot. I found the 3r to not heat cycle out as fast as others making it great for setup and practice. It's amazing the zl1 1le came with one of the fastest tires ever with any treadwear rating from the factory. Now you also got me thinking I might try the cup2r at cota superlap battle next year. Talk about an expensive tire. For me fresh tires in a morning session can be 2 seconds faster than next session with 1 heat cycle tires. Usually 1 second but have seen 2. Which makes testing extremely difficult. At a track day instead of competition might be possible to swap tires mid session. Have talked about trying this but have never actually attempted. Probably best to test mid day when temps are more equal session to session. Thanks for the reply again! With hoosier contingency program I'm better off sticking with r7 throughout the nasa season and running a7 at the finals. Then for series like gta where limited on treadwear the kumho acr, yok a052, and 3r are options. With 3r being front runner on m c7z. 305 front 325 rear. Another minus for 3r is it can take a bit more warm up time and in that time engine/air intake temps rising. By the time they come in to perfect grip the car is hotter.

You're also comparing the MR version of the GT2 RS being 20 seconds faster, which I pointed out is a much better track version (I love the MR). Regular GT2 RS is 14 seconds faster at the ring on Cup2R. All adds up to me. Keep in mind any Porsche test that has Cup2R on compared to regular Cup2, is anywhere from 9-13 seconds difference depending on power output. I have a Porsche, I'm a huge fan - just pointing out the reason we did same tire on this test. Ring times can be misleading.
