Why DODGE Was FORCED To Kill The Viper - Everything You NEED To Know

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Dodge Viper was the KING of Chrysler for 25 years. It was the underdog American exotic that no other car for the money could touch.
So what happened? What killed the Viper? Was it the side curtain airbag problem? Was it a cultural shift? Perhaps it was the executives and shareholders? - Maybe it was all of the above.
Or maybe it was the Demon.

@Milo Jones Yeah, it is a Halo car, it itself was never intended to be a windfall no more than the Ford GT is for Ford. Those cars, like the Demon are to raise the sales of the rest of the offerings and draw attention. I doubt Chevy makes any money off the few ZR1s it will sell, but when Iit rolls out it will get a lot of press, helping sell the lower trim Vettes and other Chevrolets. It's a very good business model when you consider the attention the Demon and Viper brought Dodge who's sales used to be way behind the other companies.

@@vitreo1363 I don't think so because the Viper was alive for years after the Challenger came back (which they marketed brilliantly). It just was very powerful, hardcore car that was not built for being a Daily driver. The earlier versions of the Viper had zero traction control, did not have door locks and had sidee xhaust that could burn you to the bone if you brushed up against it. The later version of the Viper was was more refined but out of reach of most people like the Corvette ZR1 (the regular Corvette, which I owned was very drivable day to day). I think Viper paved the way for Dodge to bring the Hemi roaring back as it was an image car, just like the Ford GT and GT500 is for Ford. these cars are not for the masses due to price. Unlike the Corvette, there was never an entry level for the Viper, they all were powerful regardless of trim.

Another reason for the Viper's demise was the price of the 5th gen. in comparison to earlier Vipers. It jumped $40k-$50k over the 4th gen. What people didn't realize was how much better the 5th gen. Viper is. It is a spectacular car where the ealier generations were uncomfortable and harder to drive. The build quality is better too. It was probably the best value performance car even at the original MSRP. Current prices are finally showing that people have finally realized what the 5th gen. Viper is.

We took it out for a half-hour cruise, came back and I asked...ok where do I sign???...snapped it up for $29K and still have it today and I never get bored driving it.

Video is your interpretation. The truth is the airbag situation that you referenced coupled with poor sales because of the wrong person put in charge of its marketing killed it. That person sent beat up Vipers with mismatched tires to magazine shootouts. Lots of bad press due to that before the car even went on sale. Who does that with a new model? SRT tried to take the Viper upscale but had no business sense, the dealer infrastructure etc to truly support the upscale Viper. They aimed at Porsche, Ferrari and so on but had little idea how to market the car. It was doomed from the start because they had incompetent people in marketing and dealer networks. Had nothing to do with the hellcats etc. Got to love how easily people are misled these days.

I've seen several listed for upwards of $300k, and saw one for almost $400k. If the engine is behind the front wheels or in front of the rear wheels, it is officially mid engine. Those Porsche 911s aren't mid engined, they're respectively rear engined.

It's one of the best American muscle cars ever made, hands down, no discussion... Period. I'd say that Dodge should be extremely proud but considering they had such a jewel on their hands but couldn't figure out how to help keep it on the road for very long... such a shame. The Viper team on the other hand deserve all of the congratulations. I'll take that back... It's unfair to Dodge.

The Vipers up to the last gen did not have traction control, and ALL had manual transmissions.. There have been conversions to automatic done, and that would be a different ballgame against a Demon even. They didnt even have ABS for a while. There are videos on KZread of turbo setups with Vipers topping over 250 mph with one of them being a 2006, but they usually have anywhere from 1200 to 1500hp. I am hoping to get a gen 4 viper myself, but I may end up with a Gen 3 being 2005-2006 and I will use the Gen 4 hood on mine, so that I can get one for $50k with low miles when I am ready. I almost jumped on a 2008 4th gen for 65k about 10 years ago, and went with a Lexus instead but wishing I got the Viper. I have to wait another 2-3 years, but I am aiming to get one in the future, and will drive it respectfully since its easy to get into trouble with one, with one being the law, and the other even bigger issue is getting bit by the snake and wiping out. It takes a talented driver to extract all you can out of it, but I would never try anything unless I was able to take it to the track. Otherwise it would be a neat cruiser for me in the real world full of Vettes.. I wanted a Vette originally but it seems like everyone has them. I am not into Dodge products, and while the Hellcats and Demons are nice, their only product I am in to is the Viper. The values of these cars will only balloon as time passes.

Imop they should've brought the viper back one last time and turned it up to 11 like they did with the challengers and chargers. Slap 2 fat twin spinners or a massive Supercharger in it and push it to 1000+. Give it an auto and manual option with the ACR track version and GTS just like normal. That would further solidify the vipers insane potential.

I think the biggest issue was safety/livability & not acceptable to the vast majority. pretty much a sports car for 1% of the population. It was, unfortunately, a little too expensive, and too close to cost to European competitors despite being faster. I could care less about the safety but wish the car was a little cheaper, hopefully sometime in the future it'll be revived, most likely as an ev or hybrid. Until then... R.I.P. my dream car :/

  • @xXturbo86Xx

A little too expensive? As compared to what? Dodge Chargers? If anything, they sold them way too cheap. They downmarketed them because the "average Joe" American thought they were just simple sportscars that they SHOULD be able to afford. And that's what made most of it's potential buyers lose interest. It might sound crazy, but people often judge something by it's price. At 100.000 it was cheaper than most of it's European counterparts, and those sold a LOT more. Why? Because they were marketed as SPECIAL cars, for a certain group of people, who LOVE expensive, special things. Selling something to the 1% at a low price, is almost an insult.

  • @StockCarGuy

    @StockCarGuy

@@xXturbo86Xx i’m not disagreeing, you gotta look at the vast majority.. the viper isn’t a normal friendly sports car.. Majority of people aren’t going to be attracted to a car that’s known to be dangerous and lacked safety until the 5th gen came out.. It also only came in a manual, which debunks at least 90% of the population cause most can’t drive stick.. I mean when you look at the philosophy of the viper it was never intended to sell, if anything dodge was actually losing money making the viper, it’s a halo car, which most halo cars fail.. It boosted Dodges reputation to make more hellcats & scat packs, but when comparing the viper to other sports cars.. only offering a manual and lacking many features despite its dominance in performance, it was bound to fail financially…. i agree and i believe the price is worth it, which it is since vipers have shot up in value since the last one was built in 2017..

Never ever I would let it go that the Dodge Viper disapears! You can't compare the Dodge Viper to a classic American Muscle Car! The Dodge Viper is more, much more. The Viper which could win the 24 hours hadn't any asistents. It was only the man and the machine with it's pure power! And the sound of that 8 liter V10! I can't believe it. What I think killed the Viper was lack of a lower cost base model. Corvette ZR-1s and Mustang GT500s (and soon GTD) sell in tiny numbers compared to their respective lower trim siblings. Sales of the base models pay for the development of the higher trim models, while those higher trim models boost the sales of said base models by generating excitement. Had Dodge sold a Viper running a V8 for base Corvette money, it might still be around.
