Viper ACR Tearing Up British B Roads | SCD Driven

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Thanks to our friends at XL Leasing we spent a few weeks with their uncompromising Viper ACR. Made for wide open racetracks we decided to take it out of its comfort zone and find out what it's like on real roads in the heart of the Peak District.

    Blah blah blah blah.... No, this car wasn't underrated at all! The only thing was, that it just wasn't capable enough to keep up with Porsche competitor cars on the Nürburgring, because a shitty manual 6-speed transmission is fucking outdated for a true performance car since many years! But the guys from Dodge really brought this car with a manually transmission... What a fucking joke! The 911 GT3 RS is five seconds faster on the Nürburgring than the Dodge Viper ACR, but the Porsche can do this with "only" 520 horsepower and a 4 liter flat six-engine... That's perfect "efficiency", but which is just a foreign word for a Dodge Viper! 7.01 minutes on the Nordschleife maybe isn't too bad for such a car, but it isn't fast enough. Using it as a road car also is quite problematic, because it's very difficult to drive, even for experienced drivers. Even racecar drivers said, that this car is quite DANGEROUS as a road car. Too unsuited as a road car, but at the same time too slow as a track car... and no chance for making it better with future safety- and chassis improvements... These were the reasons why Dodge pulled the plug out of "project Viper". "Underrated" is a totally wrong term for this car. This car had it's time, but now it's game over for it! A car which has a 8.4 liter V10 engine and manual transmission for track use in 2019 is nothing but a joke... LOL. Do you ever heard about dinosaurs...?

    Everything that people want in a super car these days was in a viper from the start. I want a N/A engine: viper track focused car: viper Car that feels like it wants to kill me: Viper. I watch a lot of reviews about cars and not one KZreadr has ever mentioned a viper. People will realize how special that car was one day.

    @@scd The only thing I would have fundamentally changed if I was the head ACR engineer would have been 305/30r19 instead of 295/25r19 tires on the 19x11's paired with the rear 355/30r19 on 19x13's. To bad there is not a track tire in those two sizes(would need to reprogram traction control too). It has 50:50 wieght balance front and rear and a front-mid engine location yet it has a width and diameter stagger that creates a contact patch size differance greater than most mid engined supercars. Also significantly less sidewall decreases the tires ability to maintain traction(including bumps while cornering) and have less gradual release of traction around corners. Significantly less sidewall also promotes faster elevation and higher temperature of a tire.

    I love this car,and I dont anderstand how people can say that this car is a big shit, the 4 gen acr broke the reccord on nurburgring and for a couple of years it was the faster car in the track. This version almost brooke the reccord again, but at the time, that they was going for the reccord lap, one of the tyres blow up, and they no longer have another chance. AT the time I think, in 3 laps they only have one clean lap, and that lap brooke 3 reccord on the nurburgring ! I can be wrong but a porche gt3 rs cant not keep up with the viper, is just to much downforce and alot of torque, yes the car have a manual transmission but who cares the gears are very long you dont need to shift all the time. And to finish the people is always saying that I want a manual gearbox, so they you have it, and in this days that the engines are getting small, this is the chace to have the biggest of all time .

As you have stated, on smooth surfaces, it handled better than expected, and it was actually quite playful. In that car at least, the steering had no ‘feel’ whatsoever though. It was still a great experience though 👍!

    Can't believe I've randomly come across this video. I was at work last week and somebody phoned up asking if we could get hold of some very specific tyres for a viper, Kumho ecsta v720 acr (we couldn't) and this is the exact vehicle they were for, reg no. is the same as the one I took off the guy who phoned. Would've been mint to see and hear it in person

    @@scd that's probably normal tyre wear on that tbh, it'll have an aggressive camber setup which is better for very hard track driving where the weight transfers more to the outer edges, but will kill them with normal driving

    Always loved the Viper. It's styling, performance and fun factor are all through the roof. I've also always found it to be one of the best designed cars in history. It's gorgeous from every angle and everyone knows what it is. You can see one from a couple hundred meters away and immediately know it's a Viper. I also like the fact that it's not a car that's gonna hold your hand on a track. Rather, it's one you need to learn over time in order to master and have a lot of respect for. The pay-off being huge. It's a serious driver's car. Not one that'll become predictable and thus boring after a short time driving it. Cars like that are way too common these days. I mean advanced AWD, traction control, stability control, active stability management, hybrid systems and paddle shifters will all make a car quicker and easier to drive but at the same time make it far more boring and predictable. While I love cars like the Aventador and Huracan the most common complaint I here from people is that they're a bore on the track because of how predictable they are. Even with all assists off and on wet tarmac they are still predictable. I'm not saying I want a car to handle like a Diablo or original NSX where they're completely unpredictable in high speed turns and will spin like a top, but a good balance like the Viper has is perfect. All great supercars have this. The F-40, XJ-220 and LFA are some good examples.

It isnt the most powerful. It doesnt have the best sound. It doesnt have the flattest power curve. It certainly isnt the most efficient... Why then?....... COS WHY NOT!!!!! As the two types of cars that I really see that require your constant attention is the vipers and the Z cars. I've driven both (3rd gen and 5th)vipers and every single gen of Z's. While the viper is just plain scary, the Z cars are that affordable you're willing to go places with it and use it more often and that gets you into trouble. I'm dailying a z32 gen z car that's unfortunately NA with maybe 190hp but getting that 5spd along with the high rear end and a welded diff any time you give it some it goes. Don't forget it's static. I've had friends drive it and they are all scared as it just wants to kill you constantly and that's the fun. Now the 370z as it's the newer gen like the viper still has a very analog feel with the optional tech package but you get always on when you want to have fun. The luxury is what makes you feel safer.

    What makes a car fast is it being easy to push it and drive it fast hence the zr1 gt3 rs , hurcan perfomante, amg gtr etc. who wants a car that is hard to drive fast laps in and is trying to fight you the whole way. That’s working backwards and slowing you down.

  • @gbales84

    This car is a thousand times easier to drive fast than a C7 ZR1. The aero on this car sticks the car to the road. The ZR1 is too much power not enough downforce.

  • @harrychristopher4946

    @harrychristopher4946

    C7 ZR1 by all accounts is an unwieldy beast. Compared to an ACR, it's heavier, less aero, more power, and less inclined to actually put the power down. ACRs set all those track records in the US with a hotshoe engineer behind the wheel, not a professional driver, because they are immensely fast while also being fundamentally pure.

    @@speedlife301 Yes and it will take additional records from the Viper in time I think. My point stands this is an easier car to drive fast than a C7 ZR1. I own a 13 GTS set up for light track duty and have driven a C7 Z06 on a couple occasions. I have not driven a ZR1, as I don't know anybody with one, but given what I know about the Z06, I can only assume the ZR1 is going to be extremely difficult to put power down and hard as fk on expendables given its mass

  • @speedlife301

    @speedlife301

    Harry Christopher they both are good cars I’ve driven both on track and with the same tires and the wing in same attack angle they aren’t far off but the viper doesn’t give you a warning when the back end gets away the zr1 breaks away gradually and it’s easy to catch. With that being said the gt3 rs and hurcan perfomante are easily to push to limits .
