    I own a 2014 ultra limited Cvo, I had one problem with that, after doing a full 3 hole service getting ready for sturgis ,I happen to add just a lil bit of coolant but my mistake was cracking open that radiator cap... well short story, that cap went out and I caused my coolant to leak out the thru the overflow, i stop by back hills Harley and they said it will be 4 hrs min to pressure test the coolant system, no faults codes showing, so I bought a gallon of coolant from them for 20.00... when I got to salt lake Utah ,I decided to buy a cap added more coolant and that solved the problem, rode 855 to California with out a prob..

Then i noticed the system shutting off the rear cylinder more often ,sometimes 10 minutes into the ride , even when the temperature was in the 70s . Should I be concern , What may cause the issue . My bike is a 2016 road glide ultra twin cooled 103 . Thanks for any help or advice. Pete

    Doc, I’m confused. I am looking at a new tri glide. Trying to understand the twin cooled system. You stated that a fellow riding in high heat should just let the bike idle and attempt to cool itself. Should I still look for that piece of shady shoulder to wait out the traffic jam with the engine shut off, or can I now sit in traffic, idling, and not worry about engine overheat?

    Wondering where you stand on it today. EITMS on my 2015 (with the updated pump installed before I bought it) activates at stop after four minutes run time if OAT is over 79f. I have the FP3 on it to monitor temp, and I see 205 cruising in 95f Florida, and 190 cruising in 80f Florida. I did add the OilBud cooler just because the water cooling occupies space needed for oil cooler SO HD JUST DELETED THE OIL COOLER! It's all about meeting EPA requirements and little about engine life. No way my eng temps get anywhere near 260 even in stop, stop, stay stopped and go a little/repeat traffic at 95f! It has been said that the EITMS was added just to satisfy the feds and the girls on back by lowering heat coming off the rear pipe! My 2010 FatBob also has a FP and it runs 220 cruising in the heat and up to 275 in stop and go traffic. It does cool off to 230 / 240 as soon as you get moving a little.

    When you turn the eitms on, and it is working, when you take off from a stop, and say a few miles down the road, does it stay turned off and you have to manually turn it back on? I’ve noticed on my 08 ultra classic, when I come to a stop after initially turning the eitms on, I have to turn it back on after I’ve been riding and come to a stop

  • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson

    @LowCountryHarleyDavidson

    3 жыл бұрын

    Normally it stays on..It only activates at a certain temperature. So if you turn it on at a stop because it is so hot, riding down the road the motor will cool down below the activating temp so it won't be coming on at the next stop until the motor reaches the activation temp...Doc

    Doc Harley (Mike). Would it be possible to split the cooling radiators, making one Into an oil cooler? I think it could be done by re-arrainging the hoses to accomplish that. I presently have a 2015 Ultra Limited. I have been told that Harley does not offer an oil cooler for those models due to the cooling system taking all the forward area. If it is possible, that in itself would be a huge advance for a very practical solution. Harley engineers should have considered that while still in the design stage.

    It is like asking a pig to fly. Both radiators are needed. The design requires that much service area to cool. You are correct, the motor needs an oil cooler. My own opinion would to add an oil cooler (with fan). Contact Jaggs or Ultra cool…..Doc

    @kenlautsch7104

    Like I said, Harley does not offer an oil cooler for twin cooled bikes, I checked. With one radiator cools the heads, the other cools the oil. Both working together would keep heat out of the engine. After all isn't that point? Most after market, including Harley are smaller than the existing coolers. You sound very closed minded. Does nobody ever say "WHAT IF" or "WHY NOT"? You seem unable to think out of the box. I have been an owner and do most of the required mechanical tasks for over 50 years. Some people lack creativity, or never question some of the engineering. Look around yourself dood, there are some very creative people in our community. Isn't that how a good portion of accessories and upgrades 😀 come about? Somewhere, some how, somebody said "why not"? Or "how come?

    Very good, informative video........that the fact is that the two radiators and thermostat and coolant pump, and all that plumbing, are just there to really only cool the exhaust valves which are the hottest part of the heat output on Twin Cam engines, and the cylinders have no water jackets, like in normal, Metric "real" liquid cooled, engines which cools the whole engine, down.........and Lord, help the biker who drops this Twin Cooled bike, and cracks a radiator, and have coolant leaking all over the pavement, creating a hazmat disaster, on top of having to replace the cracked radiator. Metric bikes, with real liquid cooling only need one radiator, which is protected, by being cradled, in the middle of the down tubes on the frame and a dropped bike will typically not create a radiator leak, at all. It's real an illusion, this whole Twin Cooled Mount Rushmore Project, bikes. I would rather, just have an air cooled, Evo, single cam, bike, which typically runs cooler, than any Twin Cam bikes. Thanks for the video. Very informative and an eye opener.

    tomcata dropping the twin cool Harley is not going to bust the radiators. They're protected entirely by the engine guard (crash bar). As far as the "Hazmat disater" if the antifreeze leaked...come on dude. Also take a look at some of the metric radiators...many of them are wider then the frame and will be damaged when dropped...unlike the Twin Cool. You mention the "real" liquid cooled, engines which cools the whole engine, down. I'm trying to figure out where that even makes sense. The harley engine is an air cooled engine with additional valve seat liquid cooling. It's not "fake" it's a totally "real" successful design engineered and built into the Harley with Twin Cool. If the Harley did have a valve seat cooling issue (cracked radiator, bad thermostat, leaky hose etc) so what... ride your machine home with no damage to the engine. Metric with "real" engine cooling...you're not going to get very far before your engine is destroyed. BTW I don't own a Harley, I have a Yamaha V-Max which I dropped a few years back...and cracked the radiator.

  • @alanwhiteside410

    tomcata1467 On the twin cooled HD you can still get Home if you damaged your radiator but not on a metric bike, nothing against them bikes just saying I have had both types. The HD has the engine guards that will protect the radiators and several metric bikes do not like the 1985 V-Max I once owned and there are several others metric bikes that don’t have protection around the radiator also. So after reading your comments I don’t think you know what your talking about and your not much of a biker.
