    In Louisiana's summer heat and humidity, the bandana technique really helps. Freezing the soaked bandana prior to a ride is even better and it cools for a surprisingly long time.

    Doc, I was stationed at the air base back in the 80’s & 90’s and always had a bike; a Kawasaki & a AMF Sporty later on. You are a genuine guy and although I am over 1300 miles away now, you make me feel at home. Palmetto hospitality! I just enabled EITMS on my RGS and am glad it’s there to use. Thanks brother.

    some 20 years ago I was going threw the Nevada desert in a t-shirt trying to keep cool, an old timer said to get my t shirt completely wet in the sink, put it on, then put your leather jacket on and zip it up with air vent open. It was a bonafide swamp cooler A/C and keep the drying wind off too...As for the bike, Red Line 20w-60 keeps the oil pressure up in extreme heat.

    I use the reefer brand oil cooler with twin electric cooling fans on my dyna s/b. I bypassed the thermo switch which activates at a particular temp to turn on the fans. I can turn the fans on whenever I choose. That w/synthetic oil has to help.

    I have used the bandana trick for years. I always have one on my bike no matter what and I used one at work tucked under my shirt at work. It really helps specially with a breeze blowing over it.

    Not a bad video. Clear, easy to understand terms, but I have to admit one thing - if Doc has been riding for any amount of time and never heard of the bandana trick, then I'd love to know where he's been riding. I've been riding since 1978 and discovered that trick in my first year of riding. As for keeping the engine cool, I ride a 2003 Road King Classic, so I don't have the electronic temperature management system on my scoot. Personally, if I wanted to ensure my engine stayed cool then I'd buy and install a set of cylinder fans instead of an oil cooling system. They're about the same price but the fans do a much better job of cooling off the engine than the extra oil will.

    Sir I have a 2007 FLHTC. After getting trapped for hours on one of our main motorways by a crashed and overturned container truck in high summer I fitted a set of Love Jugs. Other makes are no doubt available. No more worry about low oil pressure and overheating in stuck traffic, something this overcrowded and transport-inept island specialises in during rush hour.

    To add to what’s been said here to reduce heat on my 09 flhtcu that resulted in a much better running more comfortable motorcycle are as follows: Installed a ultra cool oil cooler with dual thermostatically controlled cooling fans. Note: when an oil cooler is needed most is sitting still in stop/go/stop traffic or at slow road speeds & without the hvy dty Elec cooling fans to force/move cool air thru the oil cooler sitting still in summer heat they are almost useless till you get back up to road higher road speed again offering no temp reduction of oil or the motor with no cooling fans doing just that! Installed love jugs smaller diameter dual cooling fans that attach to horn mount on left side of bike,you can manukau turn them on as needed or install optional thermostat to do it for you. Installed adjustable XEID resistors inline with the 02 sensors that change the voltage signal to ecm that controls fuel calibration allowing you to richen up fuel calibration at idle,off idle to midrange & all thru midrange fuel curve a bit/just enough to make the motor idle & run smoother with better throttle response With only a 1mpg hit in mpg which is well worth the better running motor and bit richer fuel mix can reduce engine temp too. Went to external crankcasebreather to remove the extreme hot blowby crankcase gases with hot oil mist form being injected by the motor making it run hotter & carbon up combustion chambers over time increasing compression causing motor to detonate even on premium fuel. After testing mult dif mfg’s 20w-50 semi blend & full syn oil I stayed with either Spectro semi blend or full syn motorcycle specific oil that’s properly formulated for lrg air cooled Hd v-twins. I also found Spectro oil to be superior in the trans & prim case too,I used their syn oils specifically formulated for hd’s 6spd trans along with their std Dino (85W?) also specifically formulated for hd’s prim case too,can always find neutral np with proper clutch adj! Run chevron Techron injector/comb chamber cleaner at 1.5oz per gal fuel thru 2 tanks fuel in a row just before I do 3k mile oil & filter changes. Bottom line was doing all the above yo the 09 flhtcu I had resulted in the following improvements. * Reduced oil temp approx 50deg f in summer cond which in turn increased oil pressure at idle by approx 5-7psi & @ cruise by approx 8-10psi. It ask made the valve train stay dead quiet at all times which at the same time reducing oil temp 50 deg significantly reduces engine temp too. Could now go back to running cheaper 91 octane fuel Hd rec’s for that bike because the Motor running much cooler stopped detonating on it & I could the stop running more expensive 93octane fuel. Motor started much easier/faster post fueling up on hot days because starter,battery & engine in general were not overheated & heat soaked anymore. The engine retained most all of the power:trq it used to loose in summer feeling soggy to now retaining crisp throttle response. There is was considerably less heat coming off the engine making it noticeably cooler & more enjoyable to ride esp in summer heat. Those were hands down the best bang for my buck improvements & mods I did to that bike that resulted in a much better running & performing bike that’s was more comfortable to ride too. Another plus to the oil/engine running considerably cooler is all the gaskets,seals(esp valve seals) & plastic tensioners in cam box & in primary case too will last much longer not being exposed to excessive heat Mile after Mile after mile too!

    An old farm trick I learned is the night before a ride take water bottles poor out about a third down the sink and put them in the freezer. The next morning top off with water and you'll have nice cold water most of the day especially if put a plastic bag with ice in your hard bag. As the day goes by the ice in the water bottle melts and you have continued cool water to drink. Also if you wear a bandanna on top of your head wet it as well

    Never heard of shutting one cylinder off in a motorcycle before. When it is shut off does it also shut the injector off so no gas is going into it? ( one would hope). I know cars have played with this theory for years with the old Cadillac 4,6,8 motors which would switch off a couple of cylinders if they are not being used. I was never sold on that feature or these new cars that the whole motor shuts off whenever they stop and then it has to start again when you set off. To me that causes more wear and tear on a motor especially if you're starting and stopping in traffic all the time. Usually this is in hot weather when people have their air conditioning going in the car as well, so with the motor off the air conditioning will not run and you'll want to open the windows until you get going again. Now if it's hot and muggy and raining at the same time you don't want to open your windows so now, you got a problem. Also in winter, the hardest thing to do is restart the motor when it's cold and you're asking this motor to start and stop all the time? Every time the motor stops, oil drains down into the pan, leaving less lubrication on the top end. I don't subscribe to these newfangled solutions supposedly designed to save gas and CO2 emissions. I think they are just a gimmick to help sell cars. If they really wanted to save on gas and CO2 emissions they would simply make the engines way more efficient than they are. I'm sure you've heard of the story of the Jetta in Germany getting 65 miles to the gallon while the same car in United States was only getting 30?

    An unusual question under this video. First of course take it to your dealer for Diag. Next. Any codes when you access the on board diagnostics? This could be as simple as a bad tank of fuel. Water in the fuel from the condensation in the underground fuel cells. Then there is the question of modiiications done to your bike with a proper dyno tune? Did this just start or slowly getting worse? I then would be suspicious of the hard plastic manifold failing. Bring the answers and other information to your favorite Harley Tech……Doc

  • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson

    2 жыл бұрын

    I do not have Facts for you. It is my opinion that Our motors are Air cooled. I want as much air to reach my motor as possible. I personally do not put covers on my motor or transmission. As for your question on Temperature. HD has never published a "too high" temperature. I watch the engine temp in the dyno room and try to keep it between 230-280F. This is for a Big Twin. Sportsters are allowed 320F as an acceptable running temperature......When you stop and think about this motor, it is totally amazing how it runs from dead cold to blazing death vally heat and stays together....Doc

    Hey Doc, you made me think of a question. My '04 FLHRS TC88A Carb 102K MILES compression tests @ 140psi front, and 139psi rear - down about 16% from new. With compression a little lower than new, does it take more air/fuel to achieve the same MPH than when new (~163psi)? (e.g. 75 MPH) ... and therefore generate more heat on hot days in the 90's at higher speeds? Thx

  • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson

    @LowCountryHarleyDavidson

    2 жыл бұрын

    A great question to think about. Your bike will definitly be working harder to achieve 75 with less compression. You will be turning the throttle a few degrees more than new and will have to twist more to accel. All this will have the Carb fuel system adding more fuel. So Yes it is possible your bike is running hotter , working harder to keep that smile on your face....Doc

    Question, when the engine idle management system kicks in does that effect the voltage output, when my 2014 Ultra Limited kicks in my voltage drops from 14volts down to 12 to 12.5 Volts.. is that normal? After my dealer changed the voltage regulator, battery and the the stator under warranty thank God, it still did it and they said it was normal operation.. IDK??

  • @LowCountryHarleyDavidson

    @LowCountryHarleyDavidson

    4 жыл бұрын

    Not knowing what lights, accessories you have on our Ultra it is hard to say. Yes when engine management kicks in the idle is at its lowest which in turn means the alternator/stator is turning slower and not putting out a lot. At a stop you are applying brake lights, headlights, aux lights plus stereo. A lot of demand. If your battery is over 2 years old capacity is declining. I wish the dealer had offered you an up sell to the 54 amp high output charging system. This puts out a lot more at idle. Thanks ~ Doc

    @@LowCountryHarleyDavidson I will look into the upgrade to the 54 amp charging system, all I have is stock equipment, no extras. The reason it went into the shop was that it stalled once at a stop light when the idle went down and the volts went from 14 to 12 volts it cut off on me one time. On hot days 90 plus the voltage at a stop sign in town traffic, will drop and the bike sounds like its going to cut off.. thanks, Bryan (From Maryland).
