Ever wonder what those complicated-looking shoulder features on a biker jacket do? Do they matter if you’re not riding a motorcycle?
Action backs and underarm gussets (or footballs) are a common sight on motorcycle jackets.
In this video, I compare to very similar Schott Perfectos. One with the action back and underarm footballs, and one without.

Without doubt movement matters for sure & its great that you address this issue,Just received my custom made leather jacket incorporated under arm gussets.Makes them so much more comfortable.

Nice. Especially matters with heavier/stiffer leathers on a trim-fitting jacket. Will say it’s one of the wonders on my Langlitz timberline- no action back or footballs but still easy to move it without looking bulky

Even driving in a car, with a good seating position. Always nice to have.

Thanks Michael. I’ll say it’s the one negative about the brown perfecto. Wish it had the action back!

Once again a very pleasant video, where I can enjoy seeing you in two different perfectos, - so great, as I love that look the most! - Additionally it was also for me as someone, who doesn't ride a motorcycle, very interesting to see and learn about the comfort aspect of these action backs and underarm footballs, - details, I didn't know anything about. I must also say, that these action backs and underarm footballs add considerably to the comfort of wearing regardless of the fact if riding or not riding a motorcycle. Thanks a lot, man, for this inspiring leather jacket lecture. - Go on rocking your leathers! Peace and kindest regards from Switzerland.

Thanks Willy! Now clearly I have some jackets without these features. But I think some folks get stuck on the idea that they’re just for bikers. They’re not!

Hey do you have any experience with higher quality lambskin/sheepskin leather jackets. I have full grain buffalo and cowhide leather jackets. I'm a short stocky muscular guy, so I was interested in trying a lighter weight jacket for more maneuverability.

Have heard from several friends that some sheepskin jackets like those from Lewis Leathers or Addict Japan are robust but flexible, sorta like deerskin an easier wear. Less familiar with lamb options but they’ll probably be easy wearing, it’s the normal with lamb

I just bought a 626. Unfortunately, the biswing back gusset of the right shoulder, flips back whenever I extend my arm. It will go back into position if I wiggle my arm a bit. However, when Jackie stepped up it pretty much stays flip back. This may be due to the elastic that you mentioned. I sent it in to schott and they sent it back with the issue unresolved. Haven’t heard back from them.

Ah interesting. Sorry to hear it’s not resolved. Perhaps a post a FedoraLounge outerwear section and someone can give advice? I personally hate the batwing effect when the gussets don’t stay in place but have heard it can be an easy fix (barring some defect in the leather panel)

@@DudsByDel me too man. Been dreaming of a schott for about ten years. Never bought a cheaper brand and had to wait until after grad school and my career was established before i could safely afford one and then it’s a bit of a disappointment.

@@ericnino6048 I do find that with stiffer leathers it’s tends to be less of an issue. Like their steerhide is much less likely to get “floppy” back there than the naked cowhide for example

How come you leave the lapels unbuttoned?

  • @DudsByDel

Good question. Maybe should do a little video. So the function is to keep lapels from flapping in the wind while riding a motorcycle. I don’t ride, so no need. You may be thinking, but doesn’t it look neater snapped down? Yes, a little. However there’s a trade off. You’re keeping the leather around that snap on under tension. Over time it’ll stretch and kinda look deformed. Especially if the jacket gets wet. Now that may be a look you want. But I don’t like it as much. So I keep it unsnapped.
