DM's Wife Calls Player EVIL For Playing An Evil Character | DnD Horror Story

Ойын-сауық

In today's episode of RPG Horror Stories, we have a tale about a dungeons master's wife refusing to play with a player, because they are playing an evil character, a story about a dungeon master that throws 5 yetis at 2 low level characters. Then we have a story about a DM that gives a player a cool item, only to take it away in a stupid way. And finally we have a story about a lawful good paladin, that turns out to be a murderhobo.

I think her husband should be very concerned. Because her philosophy of: Only evil people would be OK. Playing as evil people, should also hold true for anybody who kills themselves in game. Her whole killing her self, because the party won’t kill the the other player should be something of concern if her beliefs or that strong. (of course, I’m meaning all of this in a joking manner, wanting to throw her stupid ideology back in her face)

One of the servers had a rule to not play Legion or Enclave characters 'cause that'd mean you'd support their terrible behavior irl. Another you couldn't even play as NCR for the same reason. Heck, the same server even made all the "evil" factions leave the Mojave, except Yes Man, I think. Tried to do a vote where you could play as said "evil" factions, but the owner had none of it and basically said it's her way or the highway. That server ended up committing lava swim a month afterwards due to no one wanting to play.

The first story is just crazy. I myself have played an evil character before, who also went through a redemption arc and became lawful good. I am certainly NOT an “evil” person. Heck, my character’s evilness was solely based on her terrible perception of herself as she was born and raised to be a monster by the cult that imprisoned her and killed her father. She had the mindset of “I do evil things so no one else has to” due to her lack of faith that goodness always wins and had a serious thirst for vengeance against the cult for quite understandable reasons. The most extreme evil thing she’d do was threaten anyone who got in her way or straight up kill anyone she believed was aligned to the cult. Ironically, when my character was given reason to believe our bard was aligned to the cult and threatened him, he managed to calm her down and plant the seeds for her redemption arc. They ended up becoming as close as siblings and she cried when he sacrificed himself to destroy the BBEG. My character also developed feelings for our lawful good Dragonborn paladin who had also helped my character through her redemption arc and left a big impact on her. In the aftermath of the adventure, she adopted a goblin child we saved in the beginning of the campaign and joined the temple of Hestia her father was once the head cleric of. Outside the game, I doubt anyone could ever even consider me evil. I’ve often done charity work, help anyone in need of help, create stories and artwork that inspire people to be better people and accept others, am always there for my friends, teach children, help my mom with her work, have a strong moral code and sense of justice, etc. I am by far from evil by all accounts. I do not mean at all wish to claim myself as a saint. I do have my faults like a nasty temper and other issues that can make me a challenge to get along with at times, though that mostly comes from some mental conditions I have that can have some negative side effects. I never use my conditions as an excuse, however. Just try to explain some things about myself and will try to take responsibility as much as I can when my conditions become a problem. Most people who meet me tend to adore me and feel safe talking to me, I’d try to help them through their problems and give them innocent yet wise advice that tend to help quite a bit. I tend to be the emotional heart of my friend groups, hence why people so often come to me when they’re having problems. I do have my limits, however, and will let my friends know when something is beyond my boundaries and comfort zone. Though I do often still find myself giving them some advice based on what I know so far because I want to at least try to help them feel a little better. From what I’ve shared, I hope that you can see that I am far from an evil person. But I would honestly love to give my evil character a second chance now that I have a better understanding of the game and her character. I’ve even redone her character sheet to make her a tiefling Divine Soul sorcerer than the half-drow/half-aasimar warlock/cleric she was before. Yeah, I leaned in pretty heavy with edge of this character. It was only my second campaign and I wanted to try out a redemption arc on an evil edge lord to see if I could make it actually fun and interesting. I succeeded, but would definitely still change things now that I’ve got a better understanding of things.

Although one could say this about any DND horror story, if it was handled right a large encounter like that could be a great introduction- in different circumstances of course. As an example, at a one shot that a friend of mine ran, low-leveled mind you- the very first encounter was two dragons that were in midst of a battle, so they had to use the environment to their advantage and flee with the rest of the crowd. It was a strange one-shot, but essentially they were just local individuals/NPC's trying to survive til the heroes showed up.

As a writer, there's an annoying amount of people who feel the same about horror authors. "How could you come up with these horrible things if you aren't horrible? You must want to do them!" I seriously do not understand where the logic comes from. Just because I write about monsters does not mean I'm going to suddenly drink your blood one day, but there's still people who say they feel "uneasy" interacting with me because of it. Now bear in mind in my experience this is entirely people being weird about it on Twitter and TikTok. I've never had anyone act that way towards me in real life, and certainly not during a game. Other than that, this sounds like a jealous dependapotamus who's paranoid of a single woman being near her meal ticket.

This is one of those cases where both players should work together to have the characters clash in an enjoyable way that doesn't affect the pace of the game, and they could have a reason to tolerate each other despite disagreeing on some things. Oh, and make sure you never steal from the party, only NPCs. Stealing from the party is an asshole move.

The binoculars one was just a single step away from being a perfectly valid and effective encounter, if we remove mocking the player for it. That Nat 20 should have resulted in them seeing the figure on the hill and getting an intense feeling of unease or dread, as well as a chill figuratively and literally running down their spine, then the DM asking if the player wishes to look closer. If they say yes, the encounter plays out the same. If they say no, then they get away with just some minor cold damage. You've made the encounter happen only based on the player's choice, and foreshadowed Death regardless of which action they choose.

Last story; Yeah, Paladin shouldn't have gotten away with any of that and still be a paladin if the DM was doing their job. In AD&D, Paladins MUST maintain a Lawful Good alignment. Period. If they ever knowingly and willingly commit an evil act they instantly lose all their Paladin abilities and status and become a fighter of the same level. I'd consider routinely bullying NPCs without good cause and sexually harassing their party members to be suitably evil acts.

"No he is not evil he is just miss understood" "ahu.. what about Jack sparrow from Pirates of the carribian?" "No he is not evil he is the hero" "no.. they are bouth bad people, but beacuse you allowed yourself to watch their storys you learn about how and why they became what they are so you can relate, plus you think they are hot so that makes you even more keen to let them get away with murder" did not have to add that last bit but i was quite feed up with the argument at that point and it struck a nerve beacuse she ended up throwing a full glass of soda on me and then try to scratch my eyes out, not even kidding she went full psyco, still have a scar below my left eye from one of her nails, i tell people it was from a wild beast and it's teknicly not lying

I have heard this argument used seriously before - that the ability to invent or portray a fictional character classified as evil is itself an evil action, and the ability to appreciate a work including an evil character in it proves the evil of the observer - but typically it's a religious belief, and typically with an exemption for works believed to have been authored by a deity. This isn't a belief I would expect to suddenly turn up in a marriage with no warning signs, especially if the wife was fine with her husband creating evil NPCs to smite. Does seem like some sublimated aggression there. Whether "detect and butcher" can be considered morally acceptable behaviour tends to depend on the exact game being played. Personally I favor the detection system used in an early version of Exalted, where it was clearly stated that the definition of "can be detected and harmed by 'holy' magic" is managed by a Celestial bureaucratic process that's very imperfect, not really based on morality to begin with and isn't designed in a way that makes it easy to recognize special cases. Of course, there's nothing guaranteeing the equivalent to the paladin there is even supposed to be a decent person, but it's harder to say doing whatever the system lets you is by definition good. I think I'd be inclined in that third story to start loudly making my character randomly take damage and lose items on the grounds that, say, I realized the barmaid serving ale was really Death in disguise serving "death ale". Nothing to hurt any other characters, and I'm not exactly proud of it, but I'd definitely feel like being a bit disruptive after that point, and if the DM gets to say what I'm doing I'd probably start saying how the world's doing. Don't think the paladin in that last story would in fact have realized on his own. The armor is a symbol of how special he is; he wouldn't naturally think a character in the setting could affect it. (Honestly, I don't understand why clerics and paladins can ever get away with this stuff, since generally either there's a religious and/or martial order they're associated with paying attention to their actions - or in areas where they're the lone follower, you can make a pretty good case their own deity is loosely tracking them. But I can understand a reluctance to slap down somebody you're going to be forced in the future to socialize with.)
