DIY Strongman Equipment/Workouts

Спорт

In this video I demonstrate a few workouts that I used to do when I had limited equipment. You can make your own strongman equipment with junk if you are creative enough. Hopefully this video helps anyone in charge of group training, boot camps, strongman conditioning classes.
Car tire sled, homemade axle bar, farmers handles, stones.

For basic, personal use I agree. If you have aspirations to compete and want to practice your farmers walk, save up and buy a set, or find a place that has some. The weight will be loaded out to the front and back making it shift more if hand placement isn't perfect, leading to some serious wrist strength building. What we used at my gym instead of this, is two of the ez curl bars. Similar loading but even harder to stabilize at the wrist. If you can walk 200lbs per hand with a pair of those, 350+ per hand is cake with a real farmers walk set.

This proves that it's not always about the gym or the equipment, but what YOU (or the trainer) can do with what you got. I love power-rows but cannot afford my own sled/plates right now so tire/tow straps will do! Thank you Alan!!

I made farmers walk handles from an iron profile they use in construction. I had them cut to around 1 and a half meter and welded handles on them aswell as 2 small 50mm towers to fit plates. Best farmer walk handles I've ever used and it cost me next to nothing.

Great idea with the chain handle... I think I already have all that stuff... Last night I got a nice loader tire for $40 and it fits perfectly in the back of my pickup. The problem is, I can't get a decent grip on it to load it into the back of the truck. I'm thinking that if I can get a decent chain handle on it, I can deadlift it just enough to shove it in by myself...

An old video but still... - if you looking for strong cheap/free straps for anything, get a fire hose. Your local fire department will probably give you one for free. These hoses come in 25-50 meters (~82-165 feet), you can make endless things from it. I got one 50 meters hose and it was enough to make pulling straps, gymnastic rings straps, belt for weighted dips, a couple of adjustable add-on resistance weights for bar (instead of chains), and I still have left overs. I saw one guy making a CrossFit battle rope from this hose and other use it to make bags, wallets and whatever.

I found a few even cheaper options for my girlfriend. Axle bar: Get pipe insulation with 1 inch inner and 2 inch outer diameter. Wrap it with none slip tape at the points you grip, cut it open and wrap it around a normal barbell. It'll fall apart fairly quickly with an advanced male using it but it's sufficient for most strongwomen pressing. Rope pulls: Find someone strong and have them grip the rope facing the opposite direction. As you pull have them feed you the rope but applying a lot of resistance. Atlas stone: Buy air drying clay in bulk (works out a fraction of the price of buying a stone), form a ball out of it and wait for it to dry. Don't know how well it'll work for large stones but the 80lb stone I've made is holding together nicely (being careful not to drop it). Since it's a lower density than concrete and forms a larger stone for it's size should train the technique required for heavier stones.

I wish I could tryout atlas stones, but no gym around here has them. Living in the city without a truck or anything makes getting a sizable natural stone kind of hard as well. I do have a 124 lbs Monster Kettlebell that I occasionally lift without the handle yet feel like its smaller size changes the lift a bit as it's more cupping with the hands then wrapping with the arms to make use of the back muscles more. Plus, being a sphere that naturally wants to roll, purposely avoiding the handle so that it won't "help" often makes it even more awkward.

I would say your best bet is trying to find a steel pipe that's 2 inches in diameter, then getting the clamps to make your own sleeve. that would allow you to fit olympic plates on the axle and still be about double the diameter of a regular barbell.
