The most important step that I found was to take some time to class the reservoir. I serviced mine a few months ago and it didn't make a big difference but last night I decided to do it again but spent around 20 minutes cleaning the reservoir. I literally got big chunks of solid sludge that was preventing fresh fluid from flowing freely through the pump and now the difference is night and day. Thank you sir you're the best.
I've watched about half a dozen videos on this topic and this is the most thorough method. Of course not everyone has a vacuum pump like that.
Great to see someone doing good and thorough work on a car !! Well done !!!
Honestly, I watch several online Auth Tech channels, but this is was the best way to flush a PS system and explained in 5min. Doing this way you eliminate the risk of getting air into the system. Thank you so much for sharing...
This is the most professional video I've seen yet. Definitely a class worth learning for my family and friends. Thanx for posting......bravo.
I use the power steering pump pressure to flush my steering system. I remove return line from tank & attach a hose to a pan . Have someone operate ignition key and dump flush fluid into it until fluid comes out clean . Then top off as required.
I have been looking for this video forever. I never realized it was so easy to get all the fluid versus turkey baster or worrying about starting anything at all without fluid. THE BEST VIDEO EVER!!!
This is by far the best vid on power steering change. I was thinking the same thing you did when watching other vids. Glad I got to see this.

very clear professional explanation ! good job ! very honest auto-mechanics ! nice man !
Great commentary! I can't wait to do this in the shop!
Just did this on my 01 sequoia and wow it’s a big difference in how easy it is to turn my steering wheel! Thanks a million for this video!
I love this video! I'm a new tech so learning stuff like this really helps me out! Thank you!

That was excellent, very informative. I will go pick up a vacuum pump today..
I did this to my 4Runner thanks to your video sir! It was very easy. Thanks again!
Way better than cranking over the vehicle over and over!!!! Great job!
Great way to flush system without subjecting power steering pump to cavitation and the resulting possible damage. Thanks for the excellent info.
Thanks by far the easiest cleanest method I have seen to date! liked and subscribed.

Thank you so much. I've been looking at this grey goob for a great long while now.
Did you guys turn the steering wheel from rack to rack while doing this? Great video!
Newbie question: Is there not a benefit from having someone turning the steering wheel from lock to lock during this process? If I am picturing where the fluid lies in the system, it would seem to me to be something one would want to do.
Great, Got a mightyVac. They work awesome. Actually about to replace my powersteering pump on my 5.0 Explorer but I think before I do I'm going to flush out the fluid so the new one will have some nice clean Amsoil for the install.
One hell of a video. Nice and clean. He makes it looks like fun. I need to flush a honda pilot 04. Thanks for the instructional video
Great video and I really like the vacuum flush method but I would like to ask if this method drains all the fluid as the lock to lock method? Thank you.
I agree - forget the turkey baster - messy and you don't get as much out. I started using one of these MityVac units a dozen or so years ago. Great tool.
There's something really satisfying about flushing old, dirty fluids and oils out, and replacing with nice fresh stuff!

Wow! Just used this procedure on my 2012 Mazda CX-9 and worked like a charm! I used a $8 vacuum suction device from Harbor Freight. Had to remove the coolant reservoir to gain access, which took 1 minute. Thanks a million!!!

can you tell us the model of harbor freight vacuum suction pump you used?
Nice video. I invested in a Mityvac evacuator to change oil in a 2004 Mercedes per the shop manual and have used it for tranny fluid evacuation and partial power steering evacuation. Sometime you wonder if spending $100+ on a tool is worth it. This video convinces me I made the right choice. I have four vehicles dating nine to 17 years old that I maintain myself and this tools is well worth every penny.
More DIY Videos!!! This was an awesome video! Also keep the tool reviews lol! 👍🏾

,really good video is there and change in having air in the system if you don't use this type off pump ???
Very thorough service joel! looks great. At the nissan dealer i work at we use a bg flush machine that can either evacuate or fill the reservoir. it does a so so job but the fluid never looks as clean as you got it with this service procedure! keep up the good video's!

+Midnight Garage thank you! We have the machine you're talking about and I don't use it. I feel this is what the customer is paying for. Not a machine that can only get 75% Max of the Fluid.
Great video, added to liked list. Does it matter if you use brake cleaner or a degreaser like purple power and some water? Not sure if it matters either way and if I need to then use something for any cleaner residue that might be left in there?
Thanks for the helpful video 🙂👍 did mine today
Best DIY idea on KZread, Thanks

You need to completely dry it off first before pouring the ATF into the PS reservoir. ATF and brake cleaner don't mix well.

Brake cleaner is a solvent and is designed to evaporate very quickly. Just allow it to air dry is fine.
Good video. I just did this on my 2007 fj cruiser.

Thanks for your video, I have a 2011 Volvo XC60. Can you please tell me what line you are pulling the power steering fluid (PSF) from? Is it the line where the PSF comes back to the reservoir or is it the line that drains back to the system? Thanks.
Awesome video man. Great tips
I like this clean way of flushing PSF/and brake cleaner for the reservoir.

@Jean-Guy Heon ! Yes! You are right. I got 2 of this kind of vacuum hand pump (2 way). The one he used is one way; and have not flow control valve. The same pump I use for Oil, ATF, brake fluid and steering fluid change. Best tool and method for all fluid change.
Awesome video! Can you explain how the plug and pump are connected to flush? I couldn't quite understand how it was put together. Thanks!
Very clear and to the point. Thank you for the info.

+Siegfried H. Ward you are welcome! I hope it works for you as good as it does me.
I purchased a second hand 2009 Subaru Forester which came with "3 years ""free"" servicing" at the dealer that sold it. Among other things that all of a sudden need a "service" after just 1 visit to them, power steering was one of them and they wanted $195 for this job. I'm pretty handy on the tools so after some googling I found this video, seemed the easiest method, so got a fluid pump ($30) and the ATF fluid for my car ($15) and spent 30 minutes extracting and replacing the fluid. It is basically as easy as is shown here and worth the cost of the pump just for this Vs jacking up the car and using the steering to pump out the fluid. I also used it to suck out my brake reservoir and also my clutch. All up I saved almost $300 after the cost of extra tools and fluids from what they wanted to charge me. I am sure most would know but you cannot do this same process on brakes. You can suck out the reservoir to almost empty but need to bleed the brake lines the correct way. KZread that, it's not hard for someone with a simple spanner set. Well worth the time to learn how to do these things yourself.
Excellent video... simple... Nice!
Very slick and common sense method. Thanks
Sir! You Are A Super Dupper!! Thanks For Sharing!!
I'm assuming this same process can be done on a 2015 4Runner? I'm so getting one of those Mity vac pumps. Thanks for the vid!

WoW! This is going to save sooooooo much time. The unit link you provided seems to have a bad reputation tho. Either the EWK or OEMTOOLS are better options if anyone wants something that wont explode on you. And with the EWK you can hook up your air compressor to make it do all the pumping for an even faster job. Once again, thank you for showing me this!!!
You the man! Thanks helped me out a lot
You must turn the wheel to the right an left to help push out the old stuff in the rack and pinion area as you only clean the lines an did you bypass the pump too?
Excellent video. Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I will order is vacuum pump. Do the same on my 05 Toyota Camry LE. 2.4L Question... would you say 3 bottles quarts of Toyota ATF will be enough
Super technique ... Thank you!
that was a good video, thanks for sharing.
Love the video but was wondering how you flushing the atf when you plugged the hose of the reservoir how was the new fluid going sown the tube? I couldnt see it

Love your vid, Bought the mighty vac on Amazon.Works,Okay, only thing is the upper hose to the cooler did not suck out any power steering fluid.I did unplug that hose under the reservoir.A lot of fluid came out, black of course. But I tried pumping out fluid from that hose and nothing, no fluid came out I did plug the bottom reservoir. Maybe I pumped out of the incorrect hose. I have a Ford Fusion 2008, 4cylinder engine and of course the video is on a Toyota. Can you give me some insight what i did incorrect. Thanks, I will subscribe and Thumbs up!Lol👍
Thx for ur videos, is there much difference between dexron 2 and dexron 3, toyota estima 2002 recommends dexron 2 or dexron , is it ok if i use dexron 3

did you have the vehicle on? did you do turn the steering both ways? Is it necessary for this process?
Good work, I will try that..👍
Hello, Tell me please how much fluid takes that cleaning procedure... ? Thanks.... Video was great....!!!
Do you think I can use manual oil pump( say 500 ml) instead of vacuum pump? Will the pressure be enough to drain the fluid out? Thanks.
Thanks, can I use for radiator flush
After you have done that and finally crank up the car and start turning the steering left and right, does the resevoir start to bubble up with air getting released and need to top if off again? And how many quarts of oil would you suggest to keep handy to do this?
not a mechanic, a DYI guy. seems to me a very reasonable method. Like it very much
Will changing the fluid make the loud humming sound that my cooling fan makes while I’m driving my 94 camry v6?
thanks man great vid by the way

Thanks for the informative video. I did my first PS flush on my 2019 4Runner using the same steps outlined here (minus the removal and cleaning of the reservoir). I verified the color of the fluid coming from the return line was red ATF. I went through about 1.5 qts. However, after driving for about a month, the fluid in the reservoir seems to have turned to a light brown (but still transparent) color as opposed to the red color. I understand the color will change over time, but I wasn’t expecting to change this quickly. Is this expected? Thanks again.

My 2020 looks pretty bad at 25k. My 2021 looks clean, but it’s on the highway only. The 2021 has 54k and it’s clean. I’ve been doing a little at a time. Just sucking the reservoir out and refilling. I need to pull lines.
Thx for great video
Silly question.. do I need car on at any time in sucking procedure?
So you don’t need to turn the wheel from lock to lock doing this? But also won’t the new fluid mix with the old one if you are pouring in the new on top of the old ? I need to do this to my car but I need help.
So I have a 2007 Tundra withat same type plastic reservoir. Unfortunately I'm had issues getting the lower hose clamp with the pliers (going to buy a 90* pliers). The upper hose is hard for me to pill off. But more discouraging is the stupid plastic holder is NOT sliding out of the metal bracket!!! At any rate I will try again in a few days. Thanks for the video... I search a long time for this useful video. Thank you!
Hello, If I just clean the clear platic and take out that oil only( not the tubes oil) will this still work ?
Very helpful thank you 🙂
Hello What is the position of the wheels when extracting the liquid?
Very grate work ...I work on my Tacoma
Can I still use the top hose if my return line is the bottom hose? I guess I'm asking if it matters which direction I pump through the system?
Do you really need a vacuum to flush out the fluid or can you just hook up a tube then just turn the steering wheel left to right in the same way?
...and how much does the Mighty Vac evac tool cost? I had really good luck spending like an hour cleaning the reservoir off the car as you did, only starting with WD-40 and plugging the two holes at the bottom Sloshed it all around and let it sit for 20 minutes or so and the WD 40 turned very black. I dumped the used WD 40 out and all the gunk that came out with it and took some long wood shafted Q tips( medical supply house) to scrub/ scrape what I could off the bottom of the reservoir. Sloshed some more fresh WD 40 and repeated a time or two. Then went in with the brake cleaner or even a 50/50 mix of fresh ATF and acetone since the ATF has fantastic detergent properties and the solvent characteristics of the acetone help with getting the crud loose on the areas you can't reach with the long Q tips. Foam swabs work okay too, but some don't like the petroleum and the foam tips soon seperate from the shaft. After sloshing the Acetone/ATF cocktail around, I filled the reservoir with full strength Simple Green to degrease the interior of the reservoir and after sloshing it around, rinsed the interior of the reservoir with hot water. Took a hair dryer on a warm setting to dry out the inside of the unit. A new reservoir from Toyota is $160 wholesale and the Chinese knock offs on ebay are still about half of that price. You can't do anything about the discoloration of the plastic, but this process seemed to be a cost effective method of cleaning the reservoir. Some folkks aren't as anal retentive as I am, but Poweer Steering repairs on a Toyota are astronomical even when you do them yourself. What I needed to learn from your video was which hose was the outlet hose and I thank yo for that!!
Very nice teaching brother keep it uo
Due to the seals and pistons within the power steering steering, how can the suction method actually pull out all the old fluid? It seems too easy. Let me know what you have researched. I've got three cars I have never replaced the power steering fluid in. I've seen other videos where the power steering pump forces out the old fluid. Why would they do that when a fluid extractor is so much easier?
Nice video. Can I use Mobile 1 synthetic AFT instead? or you recommend the Toyota Dexron ATF. Also is this Toyota ATF same as WS ATF for transmission? Thanks
