DIY Overland Truck Camper Part 9 (Quick Walk Through)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is just a quick walk through after coming back from Line-X. None of the insides are completed. I just go over my plans and talk about some of the products that I'll be using to complete this camper.
Here is a list of products and some links to them. I suggest you either keep your eyes open or look elsewhere when buying (I do not make any money on purchases from clicking links). Some of these products have gone up 300$ since I purchased them.
I am also starting the calculations of cost to build to this point. And I will update that cost at the end of the build.

    What a great job. Looks like I will not have enough time to build a camper on the back of my truck so I'll probably buy a bus camper and ship my truck to the state I am moving to. By the same token, Having a Bus Camper will give me plenty of time to decide where I want to live and how much personal time I want to put into the homestead. I learned a lot from your video. Thank you.

    I just happen to come across your camper build series videos. What caught my attention was you have a very similar idea as I have been thinking about. I like your build. Good job. I look forward to see how you build out for the inside as well as listing what components/products you are using. I have a few designs already drawn up using Sketchup. By doing it this way for me allows me to see any design flaws and work through them. The design I'm going for so far allows me to have a queen size mattress in the loft. On each side I have 2 access doors. One door on each side are compartments for storage, the other is to have access to the bed of the truck for access to fuel cans, water, bags, etc. I wish you enjoyment with your build and future adventures.

    Water....You are right, for making sure you have enough water during your outings/adventures. Look in to water filtration to be able to draw water from natural resources. I'm thinking I will build a solar water heater for quick shower, dishes, or any other type of clean up. Also, a 16 gallon water container using a water filter and water pump to be used for cooking. Then a couple case of 16 oz bottled water (about 4 gallons per case) for drinking, drink mixes, coffee. But again like you said you don't want to weigh down your truck. Water is 8.34 pounds per gallon. I live in southern Arizona. We do have some rivers and lakes. But during those adventures, may not be around available water resources. Also, I would be using water to re-hydrate food items. For example: a can of beans has some weight. Add a few cans of different foods will have some weight to it. I'm looking in to food dehydrators. I already have a Foodsaver vacuum sealer. Dehydrate most of your food, divided in to portions, vacuum seal. This also means less trash by volume. Once I am able to go out camping, most of my food items will be dehydrated, even using powdered milk. Less items you have to store in your refrigerator. Please take my ideas as just a thought. I'm just sharing ideas which may assist you or others in their adventures.

  • @RecceCampers

    @RecceCampers

    Agreed on the powdered milk and dehydrated foods. I have a very small supply and can't find any stores here that have anything left on their shelves. I have a multiple filtration system. And a complete water and electrical schematic that I'll be going over once I build up the inside a bit. Should be interesting. And we have plenty of water sources where I'll be camping. So collecting water shouldn't be an issue. I guess I will find out when I take it out the first time.

    @@jimh_vta I had one of those fancy ones on my fifth wheel. It was great. It's between auto close and even the models you can leave open in the rain. Depending on the real estate I have left on the roof once I install my solar I may need to go with a side mounted idea. But roof top is preferable.

    You should have sprayed white or a lighter colored bed liner buddy. The black absorbs Soo much heat. I be used it before on things like enclosed trailers and it's brutal heat. It's hard to dissipate the heat like that. Putting some sort of venting like on enclosed trailers would help too. How much did you end up spending on the build if I may ask? Great build bud. 😎👍

    For power, Have you also thought about installing an auxiliary battery in the engine compartment? My thinking is redundancy/backup. The vehicle factory battery does its job running factory components. The aux. battery would run vehicle accessories like lights, winch, etc. Then you have your solar generator to run your camper accessories. If you are not getting enough out of your solar due to very cloudy days, you would be able to charge your solar generator off the aux battery. The aux battery would be charged by solar, then again, if very cloudy days, you would be able to charge the aux battery by running the vehicle (charged by alternator).

  • @RecceCampers

    @RecceCampers

    3 жыл бұрын

    So I mentioned being able to have a battery to power devices. But setting up an auxillary battery in the engine compartment could really be a good idea. I will definitely look into that. As I am all about redundancies. I love having a minimum of three ways to do just about everything.

    Nice job...I heard that bed liners over raw wood usually doesn't do well... I also experienced it with Dura Bak years ago... I have reservations that the shell/camper was coated enough to keep moisture out. The wood flexes, swells & lifts the liner. Some of the areas seem a little thin on liner. I believe the wood needs to be sealed in a resin or similar first. Have you looked into XPS for weight & insulation ? Good luck & enjoy the set up...

  • @RecceCampers

    @RecceCampers

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you. I have no issues as of now with the Line-X coating. And it is very thin. That was on purpose as I only wanted enough to weather proof it. This whole camper is only a prototype so I can get a shape designed that I like. I'll be super happy if this last me till the end of next summer. And I have looked into insulation and it will be multiple types mixed. I won't be installing it for a bit due to weather restraints. I will be testing it out this weekend on a camping trip to test out my battery. Thanks for the comments. And keep the suggestions coming. I have a while before I can get back to building again, and can use all the comments and suggestions everyone has.

    It's a Nice build, I'm gonna be doing a similar build for my Ford F250 4WD but I'm gonna use the metal 2x4's for weight factor n strength I myself are look'n to go totally Gridless and for Long Term style... I did notice in your build you went with lumber construction and the Line-X you did is good idea but the color I think would be a Sweat Box inside and also it looked to have a lot of seems in the exterior even with Line-X those could pose a problem over time with flexing and just road speed n such... Also would like to know the over all weight out of your lumber built Shellcamper after total build before loading fridge water n cooking gas not with clothing n such just basic Shell weight... If too heavy after totally loaded may squat pickup n cause Road Walk going down Highway n thats Dangerous... As a retired Truck Driver I witnessed Bad Accident due to that Thanks for Reading PEACE

    kzread.info/dash/bejne/aKJ8lZqBgsm1h6w.html Comes just under 400lbs. It's not the lightest in its class. But it's also just a prototype right now. I just want to see how well it keeps out the water. The main gap is where it will pop up. And I have a design to keep the water on the outside. But only time will tell. And once I do all my testing over the next year or two I will start a new one out of aluminum. As per the color, I don't know how it will react to the sun. But again. All part of the test phase. This was way cheaper then doing the aluminum right away. And this will be easier to change things around later.
