DIY Overland Truck Camper Part 2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've decided to shorten the top by a few inches to make the gap over the cab a bit smaller. and I added the lower have of the pop up section(where the upper bed will be located.
EDIT:
I now have a website that you can visit to see all the items I've used in this build. while each individual email will have links to some of the products that I use in this build. This website will me a more complete collection. Thank you again for watching.

    Thank you. It is definitely strong. A bit too strong. But it came at a price of weight. Still lighter then your average truck camper but heavier then the average truck top camper.

    Its all good. Everyone has their own opinion. And while I have no issues like that with wood. This is not a permanent camper. This is a prototype camper that will be rebuilt with an aluminum frame later.

    Would this be possible to do as a DIY, but rather than wood, using some sort of metal framing to reduce the weight?

  • @RecceCampers

    @RecceCampers

    This is exactly the purpose. This camper was always a prototype project just so it would be cheaper to build overall and let me see my plans live. I am moving to a new location in around 5 to 6 months and will be creating as I like to call, version 2.0. It will not be made of wood. Or at least minimal wood. And I am looking at materials such as aluminum to reduce the over all weight.

    @@RecceCampers Have you determined yet whether we as consumers can we get our hands on the raw materials to build from scratch? In your prototype, your frame is wood, do you know in a Lance or other better quality camper, of what material is the frame constructed? From where does the camper get it's structural strenght and integrity? I've also wondered, to make it easier on myself if it might be possible to purchase the camper shell, from the manufacturer and then I can handle finishing the interior myself. So far, I've not found a source for just the shell. I look forward to your next project! Thank you for sharing this process with all of us.

    @@sheri4673 that is one of the goals here. As nice as it would be to start a business building these for people. I set this channel up as a way to show my family and friends at the other end of the country this project. I have now talked to 3 people who have started to build their own versions after watching my videos. I believe anyone can do this with the right tools. But for those without those tools. There are plenty of companies that sell camper shells that you can finish the inside. If this channel last long enough to raise a decent amount of money. It will be used to do just that. I would love to build this sort of thing at a low cost for people who want something specific. Including shells that can be finished by the purchaser. Even a set of plans that can be used to make your own using any materials you see fit. And also a more step by step video series. Thank you for the support. And I hope I gave you a bit more of a clear answer.

    Started this project on my dodge ram..my bed is not easy...the sides are not straight...the cab area is curved...I didn't want to do such complex work as far as bowing wood...for me this project looked like it could be done with minimal tools and time...but ..when I went for it...it wasn't...I don't like clamps so I tried to make it lock into the bed sides..would work but you'd still need a rubber piece between the cover and bed rails for weather...it's fall here and trying to cram all of it into one days work just wasnt looking possible so I dumped the project returning my weather seal and roofing seal and literally leaving the wood supplies at lowes because they wouldn't accept it as a return because it had been ripped into six foot pieces...lost money...oh well...ears are for wax...not bullshit...I have very little wax...more bullshit in my ears...so I decided to dump the project ..what will I do? Either buy a camper cap or I might just buy a cargo van..it would allow me to make a way better mobile living space...fridge tv heater bed and storage space...simple inverter and wall and floor mount kits...weather seal the whole interior for insulation with traction and just drive and park and sleep...save me at least a grand a month...way better than a camper shell...just a bigger buy but...a bigger value and better effect. Livable not likable ..gas higher? Maybe a tad but it's not a big deal...if I can park anywhere and sleep I will save a ton on gas anyways...it's not a big mom deal anymore. Life is good..now if tv would shut the fuck up.

    Wow. Sorry to hear about all that. I love the idea of a van but would rather the same thing in a cargo trailer. But if your going to live in it then the van will be a much better plan. I would love to design one. Keep me updated on your progress. I'll have my fingers crossed for you.

    The camper is bolted down to the truck bed. And before using it for long journeys it will have even more holding it down. Right now the overhang portion is bolted down to the camper frame with four heavy duty bolts. I made sure that it was one solid piece before bolting it down to give it more strength. I've been up there and no signs that it wont hold.

    Thank you. I would love to build these for other's. But at this moment I don't have a proper location to do the work. That's why it's taking me so long to do this. I have to work around my work schedule and the weather. If I get my shop next year, I would be able to work around the clock without worrying about weather. Once that happens then I will start helping others out with this sort of thing.
