I've just taken delivery of a 1996 Suzuki Super Carry pick up (4 X 4 etc..) and I need something like this... 2 x 2 will be more than enough for such a small build.... brilliant!! Thanks again. Just a tip for strength on the front end instead of laying down your first set of 2x4s over your cab you should have 2 2x4s with 1/2 plywood between them running over your cab in the side instead of flat if that makes sense.. for that extra support and wouldn't drop like it does. Hard to explain without showing a drawing but can't share pics on KZread lol looking great tho I have a 2500HD sierra I'm going to be doing something similar soon

Why not build high enough to stand upright inside???

I wanted to make it a bit lower actually. I just wanted enough room to sit down in. And the roof does go up so you can stand inside. I just wanted to eliminate some of the highway drag.

$60k in truck, current lumber $70k in 2x4s

Nice build. I'm about to start one on a 2010 Toyota Tundra 4×4 and am debating with myself rather to use wood 2×2's or aluminum squared tubing. I own a finish trim and cabinet shop so there's the plus on wood, but the aluminum tubing just seems like the way to go. Any thoughts?

Thanks. Not many people read the fine line. This project is just a prototype. Wood is cheaper to use for me and easier to form to what I want. So it was an easy and cheaper choice to toy around with my ideas. I actually plan to start version 2.0 in the next year or so. And I'll be using aluminum for sure. I think it will help with not only weight, but believe it will last much longer. Not a hundred percent on the outside skin yet. Between using a sort of Line-X or fiberglass. Still thinking of that for now. But wood causes issues in the long run. And I am running into them right now with the moisture where I live. So I am looking forward to changing my materials. I don't think wood is impossible or even a bad idea. I just think that you need an indoor facility to work with wood, so it stays out of the elements. My biggest enemy right now is rain. If you do build your own, feel free to share some updates on your build. I have a website in the description where I want to compile images of other people's builds to help others out with ideas. I wish you the best of luck on your project.

@@RecceCampers Yeah thanks man. I had considered using, for exterior skin, I think if memory serves it's called R22. Kind of a fiberglass wall board you'd see in walk in freezers. I was in the army and as the core of engineers would build out our bases they seemed to use a lot of a similar materials. Seemed tough and versatile.

Nice build. Now you could have saved weight by using 2x2 at the start. . It is very strong like a wall for a home. Way over built for a camper.

I definitely agree. If I did this again with wood I would stick to 2x2's. I think it hit me after I finished the frame itself that it wasn't falling apart anytime soon and I could have dropped a lot of weight by changing the wood.

I don't understand some of the design decisions that were made 😐

I am waiting to get the camper back from Line-X at this moment. And when it's back I will be doing a full breakdown of cost up to that point. A lot of items purchased were either never used, or used for other projects. So I need the physical camper to get a price tag. But I'll be making a video with that in mind.

Simpler design for less weight and wasted wood. This is excessive.

I'm guessing you forgot an "s" after design and meant that there are simpler designs out there. If so, please note that this is just a prototype build. Just meant to learn. And is amazingly light due to only being a cover, and not a complete camper. But I do agree that it can be lighter. This is why I said that 2.0 will be built with different materials.

That thing is far too heavy. Your wood could have been much much lighter. I could see you pick up starting to droop. You could have built an out house with all that timber. Good grief.

It's actually a lot lighter then expected. And way lighter the. Many camper options. But once again. Just so you know. This is a prototype. Its just to play with shapes and figure out what I want to do. I have 2.0 starting hopefully by end of summer. And after that I will be making one out of different materials. This is all for fun and learning.

I mean 5 min videos come on let's stretch it out as long as we can lol good grief

The plan was to make a complete video for the end product. I made a decision to not do longer videos as to not make anyone fall asleep.
